we have cruised Alaska over 10 times and multiple land tours.
my present only somewhat regret is not doing the Mendenhall ice cave tour- should have done that vs whale watching this past trip.
we have seen beavers at Mendenhall.
we have seen bears on the boardwalk near parking lot but never hiking to nugget falls or the other trails we have gone on around the visitor center
I have to agree, the ice caves are magnificent, and how often will you get a chance to hike them? I always hate holding back when in destinations I know I will probably never return to.

Do not waste time with the fruit punch/lemonade on r.c. it is horrible and watered down to the point of ice melting from sitting around for hours!

Her reasoning was most likely since you will be skipping several dinners in the mdr, you can have guests to fill the balance.

depending on which airline you're flying on, you may be able to check luggage early, especially if you use a porter. check with the airline to verify, but I have tipped porters and they have kept my bags for 12 hours before. also check with the airport, many times they have a baggage storage area (for a fee) that is secured.

we always book just before or after a long school break. No one takes a cruise a week or two before or after being out of school for a week or more.

I wrote a letter to the captain a few years ago as we were bringing our friends in their first cruise and our daughter was with us who was and engineering student. I mentioned those two facts on my letter. I heard back the next day and was invited to the bridge with about 4 others amid tight security. It was a great visit. Since the. I have worked on cruise ships and had to visit the bridge often. Still love going there

How did you phrase your letter? Very formal, given his position, or more of a note to not take up too much of his time?

As someone who spends half their time working in Alaska, is like to make a few additional points. I would recommend August, especially if traveling without kids. The temps are high 60's during the day, low 50's at night. School will be starting soon, so tourist season is winding down, and better deals are to be found than peak summer months. From Anchorage, a short 30 minute plane ride will take you to some of the best fishing in the world, and there is tons to do around town if that doesn't suit you. The cruise lines always shuffle people in and out so fast, they don't get to look around for long. Whether south or northbound, I wouldn't take a round trip, as they aren't long enough to see much of the state. Also, if you plan a couple extra days, there are day trip glacier and wildlife cruises, if you don't want to pay for that balcony.

We do research as to what there is to see/do where we're going, and maybe plan to go to "whatever" but we're on vacation and don't pre-plan every waking moment.
This is what we do also. We like to know what is available, but don't plan any regimented activities, as plans change. it could be raining, or we may just decide to do something else.

My opinion is different than yours, doesn't mean it's useless. I am not one of those people who believe it's safe or okay to consume alcohol while pregnant.
I believe we have gotten off topic. Can we try to remember why we are here please? Personal choices are no ones business but their own. Thank you in advance.

Are these p/p or per stateroom charges when upgrading?

We were on the navigator of the seas and found a good time at the piano bar with an entertainer named Phil Anderson. (I remember because we joked he was John's cousin.) By the end of the cruise he knew all our favorite songs and included them in his show, including serenading my fiance. Had the absolute best time with him.

Everyone says bring duct tape, I do also, but I wrap it around a pencil (off the big roll) so it takes up less room in the suitcase.

We're from Chicago, so we're the same as you. I get cold easily though, whereas my teenage son doesn't. So when I had on 3 layers, he had 2! LOL! Pretty much every excursion I had on 3 layers and hiking boots. I had a long sleeve t-shirt, then a heavy sweatshirt, and then my jacket. I bought one on the ship since I didn't pack a heavy one, just a decent rain jacket. The one I bought has a fleece inside with a waterproof outside. Definitely something I've worn again since being home.
For dinner I often wore long pants, jeans, or a long skirt and then a long sleeve top with a sweater jacket or cardigan. I will say that in general, we feel people are less dressy on the Alaska cruise than a Caribbean one. I think it's because people have so much stuff already packed, that they just don't want to get all dressy. I mean, really, really, NOT dressed up people were there on formal nights. During a Caribbean, we see maybe a handful of people still in tee's. I did bring some sandals and carpis with, but barely wore them.
Alaska in general is not a dressy kind of place. I spend lots of time there, and I've been to weddings and funerals where carhart bibs were the standard attire. Very few residents concern themselves with fashion over functionality. I would assume this may be at least part of the reason for less formal attitudes on alaska cruises.

I am curious how they will execute this, with the visas required for the 12 types of travel, I'm sure not everyone on the changed itinerary would qualify for the stricter travel restrictions. In addition, very few credit cards working and dual currencies might be a logistical nightmare. I am wanting to go as well, but waiting for the bugs to be worked out first.

I apologize if this has been asked already...does a double count as one or two drinks?

Would like to surprise my parents with a night in the steakhouse or jijis but I don't want to add it onto the cruise planner, how would I do this. Think maybe just buy cruise cash then put in notes "table for two at jijis" but then its not a booking and could potentially sell out. Is their anyway to reserve in advance without it appearing on carnival.com? TIA.

When we were on our cruise, they staff called to invite us to reserve (left messages every day) a time wen they had openings. We missed our reservation and they were able to make it up 2 nights later. So I'm thinking you could wait and make reservations once onboard.

We always get get a personal cab for the day, he takes us to coconuts, and Chen rio, is fantastic food. We went to a chocolate factory and made our own chocolate which was pretty cool too.

Also interested in this.
I did. I actually bought generic, we were quoted one price, and our cabbie negotiated a lower price. I paid $8/6 pills. Which is comparable to what friends pay in the Philippines. Name brand was about $12/4 if I remember correctly.
