  1. Don't know if this is going to work for everyone - that being noted check this LINK:

NCL STAR has just entered the Tasman Sea southeast corner southern most point off of Australia !

Look for the BLUE ship due south of Mallcoota !

Hover mouse click on the ship to reveal data.

That was last updated 17 hours ago so it'll be well into the Tasman by now! I imagine it's out of range of the tracker.

Looks like a nice morning on the web cam though

  2. For those who disparage Flags of Convenience outright, lets bring up the Herald of Free Enterprise, the Dover ferry that capsized and killed 193, while under British registry, or the Costa Concordia, under Italian flag, neither of which are considered Flags of Convenience.

While not a fan of FOC's, my professional opinion is that it is far more a factor of company reputation than the flag flown as to the safety of the vessels.

Both of which were human error. When was the last time a ship sank due to mechanical error? Much like planes I'd imagine most accidents are human error.

  3. The problem is, most likely the parts that were repaired in Melbourne had not failed, nor had given any indication of failure in December. And the part needed in December was not a stock item, and had to be manufactured.

Do you think it needs a "proving period" now or should it be OK form here on. My fear would be other parts in the mechanical chain may have been affected by the failure and may now fail.

  4. Again I ask; would someone, preferably on board, start a new thread with FACTS about the ongoing situation. You could always start it with "We haven't left yet".. But it would be somewhere that we might be able to get FACTS about what is happening without all the surmises.

Watch it sailing on the Marine Traffic app. It'll show you live speeds, position etc.

  5. Ncl must be confident it will be fixed, some folks from the Brisbane departure that was previously cancelled have been told it's back on and the Ncl provided flights are not required.

The ship can't make Brisbane in time on just one pod,so we can presume it's back to two.

As confident as they can be. A good run over the Tasman should test the Azipods out.

  6. So after all this wonderful pre planed maintenance perhaps you might inform us how the ship came to be drifting 32km off the coast of Wonthaggi ?

The answer is that is very easy for the owners of FOC registered ships to cut corners

Properly maintained ships do not have continued multiple incidences of propulsion failure

    Regards

    John

Perhaps it's just a "Friday afternoon" ship. I've owned cars that no matter how many times I've repaired them something else goes wrong?!

  7. I think that is what will make our decision for us. 2 azipods we sail, 1 we fly. No way I am letting what happened the other night occur in the middle of the Tasman or worse, close to land. We were very lucky to have had around 20 miles between us and land when we were adrift.

Fingers and toes crossed we get a good permanent fix.

  8. And if they do repair both pods in 5 days, will this be considered a "band aid" repair, because you don't believe they can do it? I'm a marine engineer, and without knowing what has failed in the past (I do know what it was in some cases), or which pod it was, and what has failed now, I can't say whether they will have another failure soon, or a couple of years down the road, or never again in the ship's life. Only someone who has studied the ship's maintenance records, and has discussed the problems with the pods' manufacturer, can tell for sure. You fix what's broke.

Have NCL actually officially said it'll take 5days or is this something that they've told passengers on board? Until there's something official, I'm skeptical.

  9. What's the probability it'll make it to Auckland on time if it takes the approximate arrival time of the 12th, 5 days anticipated fixing, and to get to Auckland in the best and worst times? I have no idea how long it takes to actually get from Aus to NZ.

It's perhaps better to ask what are the chances of them repairing it in 5 days?! I'd say not great.
