  1. Well, I can't cover everything. Spending some time reviewing this board will help. Here are just a few things, though.

    1. Gratuities are $12.95/day pp. You can either prepay them or they will be added to the S&S account on the 2nd day.
    2. Alcoholic drinks run roughly between $6 (beer) and $13, although that does not include top shelf liquor. If they drink more than 5-6 a day, they should look into the Cheers! package.
    3. Do not bring any extension cord or power strip with a surge protector, however, do bring an extension cord or power strip.
    4. You can carry on 12 non-alcoholic drinks in cartons or cans per person (12 oz or less).
    5. Each adult can carry on a 150ml bottle of wine.
    6. Do the on-line check in as early as possible.
    7. Do not show up at the port before your check-in time.

Your wine bottle measurement is incorrect. 150 ml is tiny, maybe a small glass. I think you mean 750 ml.

  2. I was perusing a long cruise (17 days) , and saw that some accessible rooms were available. I don't use a wheelchair, though I could probably use a scooter, if it was weight capable.

Mostly, as a very large, older guy, I have problems with stepping up and down to get into the bathroom, or the bathroom is too small for me. I have problems standing for more than 10 minutes, and rarely do much in the way of excursions. Just boarding sometimes tires me out for the day.

I have gotten temporary disability tags for my vehicle, although my last one expired recently, and I haven't renewed it yet.

Would it be ok to book one of these rooms? I'd be traveling with my wife and young daughter.

  3. As someone who has traveled a lot since becoming an adult, I think we have to prioritize what's important in life. I used to fly 1-2 times a year due to a busy work schedule, but changed my life focus in 2000.

Paid the house off, no new cars every 3 years, and focus on finding affordable and interesting trips. I'd rather travel for a month to interesting places, than stay a week at a swanky beach resort.

Maximizing value by having hotel status, booking shoulder season, and looking for airfare deals are key.

When you tell about the deals to friends and family, their eyes either glaze over, or they want me to find the same deals for them.

  4. Belize City is pretty average for Central America. Crime exists, but usually only if you flash a lot of valuables. I speak spanish, and never felt in danger, or needed to walk in groups.

I went for a week a decade ago, with two days in Belize City and 5 days on Caye Caulker. The islands, snorkeling and so forth are a lot more interesting than Belize City.

Lots of Canadian snowbirds down for the winter.

  5. We were on the sailing that left on Feb 11th. I swear we weren't but an hour or two away from the dock when the blue curtain went up and the work started. There was NO notice at all, we had to go ask why the slide was roped off only to learn it was being taken down and our kids would be unable to use it or the pool that was next to it. No apologies at all. I would have appreciated a heads up when we were checking in.
    That seems quite unacceptable.

Other than invoking the Satisfaction Guarantee, what's the best way to get some sort of satisfaction from such a big shortcoming?

  6. Well, I booked a 4 day cruise. I know it's not a real one, but should let us know if we want to do longer ones.

I'm tempted by the North-South America 15-20 day cruises, so figure if that goes well, then onto linger cruises later in the year.

Our child will start school in 16 months, so want to get some longer cruises in the off season under our belt, if all goes well.

  7. Thanks for the responses. I'll likely do a last minute cruise, probably a Carnival or Princess.

There are so many options out there, it's difficult to decide on the most important aspect of the trip. Food, kid's club, or cabin.

As someone who has been a top member of many airline and hotel programs, the cruise programs mostly seem underwhelming unless you've done dozens of cruises.

  8. We have travelled internationally extensively, but have never done anything more than a harbor or dinner cruise.

I'd love to do a a 12-16 night cruise, but think I'd like to take an inexpensive 4-7 night loop cruise first to make sure that we all enjoy it.

I'm thinking a cruise out of the LA or SAN area, that we can drive to from AZ. Carnival seems to have inexpensive ones, and I thought it would be a good to try a short Mexican or other loop cruise.

As I have a very flexible schedule, and no school to deal with, late April or May seems ideal. I see quite a few last minute deals, and am a Costco Exec member, USAA member and could join AARP if they offer a good discount.

Any pitfalls to look out for?
