  1. We're doing this same cruise on the Viking Star in May 2018--thanks for previewing the ports. We did the Homelands tour in July '17 and loved it.

What date are you on the Star? We are on the May 12th cruise to the Mediterranean. Are you taking any independent tours while on the cruise. I ask as I am looking for independent tour companies for Montenegro, Zadar to see KRKA National Park, and Kope to see Lake Bled.

    Thanks.

  2. We took the Homelands Cruise last summer and it was a trip of a lifetime. St. Petersburg was our favorite port city. Let me know if you book and are looking for tour recommendations. We loved, loved, loved that cruise.

    Regards.

    Lynnseab -

No, we're not doing the Alaskan Passage. We haven't booked our next Viking Ocean, and are booked up with trips the rest of the year. Looking at 2019 the Russia/Baltic cruise.

  3. Dear TJBoss,

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. It is helpful to get first hand info from fellow cruisers. I may have additional questions as I start planning further and I appreciate your offer to respond to additional questions. We love the Viking Ocean and we look forward to this trip. Our next cruise will be the Alaskan Passage in 2019. Any chance you are doing that one? Regards, Lynnseab

In Santorini, the included tour went to Oia and then back to Thira. They did not visit Ancient Thera on the included, but I believe it was an optional excursion.

The hike up to the fortress in Kotor was a bit grueling. But you could always walk up a bit and stop when you feel like it. The church/chapel is about 1/2 way to the fortress. The views are spectacular.

We took the Viking tour to KrKa national park - they did a really good job. we used them mainly for the easier transportation. we wandered off on our own once we were there.

Did not talk to anyone who did the Lake Bled tour. We took the included tour, then caught a local bus to Piran, a lovely seaside village. Very easy to get to, if you decide not to go the Lake Bled route.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  4. Bingo - we were in the lowest level cabin and the option was never there.

    Dear TGBoss,

I was read your posts about the Empires of the Mediterrean cruise and really appreciated your comments. My husband and I are taking this same cruise in the spring and I was hoping I could ask you for some more details about the trip. (This is our second Viking Ocean cruise and have been very pleased with Viking).

In Santorini, we will also take the included tour, do you remember whether Viking offered shuttle service between Fira and Oia? Did they visit Ancient Thera on the included excursion?

In Kotor, you mentioned the hike up to St. John's Fortress. I am considering doing it but I have a bad knee and not sure about the the stairs.

In Zadar, we are really looking forward to touring the KrKa National Park as well. Did you take the Viking tour for this or did you do this independently?

In Koper, I was considering the tour to Lake Bled and the castle. You didn't mention this specific tour in your post. Did you hear anythiing about this tour from fellow passengers?

We are really looking forward to this trip. Thank you so very much for your time and input.

  5. The hike is approximately 1500 stone steps, up 1200 meters elevation. We did it in the middle of the day when the sun was quite hot. It was gruelling, but we took our time and made it to the top. We are in our 60s and my husband had had by-pass surgery 5 years ago--so it is doable as long as you are reasonably fit and take your time. Anyone with bad knees should probably not consider it. There is one main route for getting to the top. The map shows an alternate one, but also indicates that it is higher risk (whatever they mean by that). I think the round trip took us 2.5-3 hours, as down is quicker than up. But, we took several rests and lots of photo stops. Bring lots of water! The cost to go up is 3 euros.

    Dear Kawagama,

Thank you for the information and your quick response. I particularily appreciated the caution regarding bad knees. I think that I will skilp this hike. We are doing a cruise through the Mediterranean. Some of the port stops include, Athens, Santorini, Katakolon, Corfu, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Koper and Venice. Did your cruise include any of these ports and if so, where there highlights or not to miss recommendations that you may have? I appreciate your input. It is so nice to be able to visit with people who have recently toured the region. Have a nice day.

  6. Thanks for that information. I think the fortress is the venue for some of the pictures that I've seen. Thanks for the verification.

I am going to Kotor Montenegro and beginning to plan our day for that port. I am interested in learning about the hike to up to St. John’sfortress. I heard that there are two different paths to get there. How much time do we allow for this hike and how difficult of a climb is it? I am also considering an independent boat trip on the Bay of Kotor to see Our Lady of the Rock church/ island, the village of Perast, and Porto Montenegro marina/village in Tivat. Your input is appreciated. Thank you.

  7. We booked TJ Travel for a two-day tour of St. Petersburg, Russia this summer. TJ Travel was wonderful from start to finish. The booking process was simple and straightforward. They responded promptly to each of my questions and were very reassuring that all would go well. Our group was relatively small, comprised of 8 people. We toured St. Petersburg in a new Mercedes-Benz van that comfortably seats 16 people. Our tour guide, Maria, and driver, Demetri, were outstanding. They were gracious, patient, and accommodating with our group. We had early entry into the Hermitage and that was very helpful given the number of visitors in July. Maria spoke excellent English and made Russian history come alive for us as we toured this culturally rich city. Several of us were attending the ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre at the end of our first day. Demetri made the transfers to and from the Mariinsky seamless. He helped us to get a snack at a local restaurant prior to going to the Mariinsky Theatre and was then prompt in picking us up at the conclusion of the performance. TJ Travel made payment easy as well. At the end of the second day, payment was taken in the form of credit cards. If you are looking for a professional tour company in St. Petersburg, check out TJ Travel. They will take great care of you while showing you this beautiful city.

  8. We are on the same itinerary on Viking Sea in Aug and are also in Gdansk for 5 hours. I found copies of dailies from a Viking cruise in 2016. In all ports Viking provides a shuttle if needed as well as an information point at each port. I think we will be be well taken care of. The 3 1/2 hr included tour covers much of what we want to see in Gdansk, so we plan to take that and then enjoy the town until the last shuttle back to the ship

This is great information to have. That is exactly what we want to do, take the included tour and then spend a little time independently prior to returning to the ship. How do I locate the 2016 dailies that you reference?

    Thank you.

  9. Viking Star- July 15, 2017 -

    Stockholm to Bergen.

I have been doing some investigation regarding a 2 day tour of St. Petersburg.

SPB, Alla, and TJ Travel are all coming up with high marks. While I have read the positive posts about Alla, any first hand info about SPB and/or TJ Travel?

    Thank you.
