  1. Here's an interesting link that shows the current location of river ships, or search on a particular port to see the ships in the area. I was interested in the Gate 1 Monarch Queen. It appears that they are still being tracked by the previous names under AmaWaterWays before becoming part of Gate 1. The Monarch Queen was originally named the Amadagio.

this link is for the Monarch Queen - http://www.cruisemapper.com/AmaDagio-position?mmsi=211498130

and here's the map with all ships in the area of Budapest ( you may need to click on the map button in the middle of the page) - http://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/budapest-port-4091#livemap

and Regensburg (click on map button mid-page) - http://www.cruisemapper.com/ports/regensburg-port-4006

  2. It sounds like you were satisfied with the changes needed to finish the trip?

We have any upcoming trip towards the end of July and certainly can't predict the weather. But we also have insurance to cancel and receive 75% of the cost for any reason. I guess we'd need to think in terms of whether it would still be 75% good :)

It is a short 9 day / 7 night cruise.

    Thank you

  3. Hi Zitsky

I tried to post the link but it appears that the site that included a list of ships including Viking may be blocked here.

You may also be successful by searching the ships name and "+draft" or ships name and "+110m" or "+135m"

I also found an interesting article earlier today about Viking building new ships with lighter materials with the goal of achieving less water displacement.

  4. .

The 135m boats will all have problems, the 110m boats should be fine for a bit longer.
I was curious, so I looked up our ship for an upcoming cruise, the Gate 1 Monarch Queen (ex AmaDagio). It is a 110m boat with a max draft/draught of 1.75m, current draft is 1.6m.

    thanks for this interesting discussion.

  5. We are heading off to a river cruise and visiting all the common destinations - Regensburg, Passau, Melk Abbey, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest.

Since we a traveling in July, I suspect that it will be very crowded. To avoid the herd, do you have any suggestions for cafe's (possibly with outdoor seating)?

Any other tips to avoid the crowds.... turn left when they go right ;)

    thank you!

  6. Hi ChampMason-

Thank you, I just found your review of the Amsterdam>Budapest trip, great information. We are going to be on the same ship - Monarch Queen, but for a much shorter version of your journey from Regensburg to Budapest.

When and how does everyone get the days itinerary and when they need to return to the ship?

    thanks again.

  7. I always do lots of preparation but really didn`t know what to expect on my first river cruise. Next time I`ll look at the towns and be more prepared for extra things I want to see.

    Hi DennyGirl

Based on your experience what are your thoughts about planning ahead? Would you escape for breakfast, lunches and dinners instead of using the ship? bring maps? locate restaurants beforehand? Bring a list of landmarks or sites that you would like to visit with extra time?

Is it best to bring printed maps for the cities, or are they available on-board the ship? Or, rely upon GPS and apps like GPSMYCITY ?

    thank you!

  8. I have a feeling that the answer is going to be..... yes, maybe.

I'll be traveling on a Gate 1 Danube cruise (first river cruise) this summer and I really don't like carrying a passport with me. But I'm always a little unnerved to leave it in a hotel safe.

Is it standard for most to carry them, or toss them into the safe in the room? Or, because we will be moving through several countries, for that reason is it best to keep it carry it.

    thanks in advance.
