  1. Good morning, all:

As many of you may know, James Van Fleet is the chief meteorologist for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. For our latest podcast, we chat with Jim about this extremely active hurricane season, how he forecasts the weather for one of the world's largest cruise lines, how he helps decide which ships to divert or cancel, and why he thinks it's so important to respond to cruisers on social media. He also reveals his top tips for travelers and the one social media insult toward him that he's now considering putting on a t-shirt!

  2. More cruise disruptions beyond Harvey?

The National Weather Service has just issued the first public advisory for a new storm taking aim at the East Coast, even as Harvey batters the South.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten has sustained winds up to 35mph and is forecast to hit the southern part of South Carolina sometime Monday night, before heading up the East Coast.

  3. Here's an update on this story: The bill has now been forwarded to committees in both chambers (HR2173 & S965). In a statement to us, the Cruise Lines International Association says the legislation is "unjustified and unnecessary." CLIA cites "a nearly 90 percent customer satisfaction rate and nearly 70 percent repeat customer rate."

The U.S. Coast Guard has investigated 80 passenger deaths in the past four years.

More on the legislation in both the House and Senate in our story here.

  4. UPDATE: At 5:57p tonight, after 29 hours and 1,000+ sq miles, the US Coast Guard suspended its search. More here.

    Part of USCG statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Mr. Scott during this extremely difficult time,” said Christopher Eddy, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard Seventh District command center. “Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make and it is made with great care and consideration.”
