My family (husband, myself and 2 kids - ages 7 and 14) are going to be in Haines on August 31st (on the Noordam) from 6 am - 9 pm. I have been searching these boards and reading for days and I am still not sure what to do to fill our day in Haines.

We have never been to Alaska, so I figured that we may as well just save time and money and stay in Haines and explore Haines (versus taking the fast ferry to Skagway.) My plan is to explore the town and maybe go to the hammer museum but it seems that will only take us a hour or two, so I need something else to do for the day.

At first, I thought we would do a rafting or kayaking excursion but from what I have been reading on these boards, we are going to be too early to see a lot of wildlife. Many of the reviews seem to say rafting or kayaking in Haines is "OK" but no one seems to have loved the experience. So, I have ruled that out.

Now, it seems the only option left is to rent a car and explore the area. We are Canadian, so we were only be able to drive as far as the Canadian border (as it seems Canadians cannot bring a rented car from the US into Canada.)

I am not quite sure where I should be driving to explore??? I know there is some type of guide that I need but I can't find what that guide is??

I am completely open to suggestions as to what we should see in Haines and places that are nearby haines. I have also e-mailed the Steve Kroschel Wildlife Centre about attending their show that day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated or if anyone can share what they did. Thank you!

I am going to take the bus to Valley Church Beach. When I leave the port area and get to market street, do I turn left or right?? I have seen conflicting statements and I am not sure what way to turn. Are there bus depots in both directions?

We (my husband and I) will be getting off the Carnival Splendor on Monday, Sept. 1 (Labour Day) and our flight does leave from La Guardia until 4:55 pm. We thought that we might tour around a bit before heading to the airport.

We are debating just touring on our own (ex. Time Square, Rockefeller Centre - maybe dropping off our luggage at the luggage storage place.) We will really only have 2 good sized backpacks. Or the other option is a walking food tour that goes from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in Greenwich Village (if we would have enough time to get to the airport).

So my questions are - what time do we need to leave the city to get to the airport safely? How much time do we need to allow if we take the subway and the bus? How much time would we need to allow if we take a cab? Roughly how much would a cab cost from say Time Square to the airport??

I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I am open to any suggestions that anyone has on what I should do this day.
