Thinking of upgrading to a Haven room for my upcoming cruise w/ my 6 month old and 3 year old (don't worry - i won't be letting them run rampant around the pool area!), and wanted to know what the extent of the in room dining is?  Is it limited to the normal room service menu? Or could we get items from the Haven restaurant? Or beyond....?

    Appreciate any info!

If you do decide to upgrade, (do it!) remember to call and order room service through your butler. If you do it that way, you are not charged the $7 (or whatever it is).

I read, through your link, that the drink package isn’t valid on Harvest Cay, but last week on the Epic, a cruiser told me that there is a Haven area at Harvest Cay, and that the drink package was valid and worked for Haven cruisers in that Haven area.

Have any Haven cruisers experienced this? Haven’t done a Western Caribbean itinerary yet, so haven’t had the chance to see Harvest Cay.

  3. I’ve read several posts where people took a power strip on board with them.

Just make sure it does not have a surge protector. The surge protector is what isn’t allowed.

All my charging is done through USB ports. So I bought a four USB charger on amazon. Plugs right into the wall and charges my phone, iPad, and watch.

    This one...

  4. If you wanted to, you could also have your butler bring an SDP meal to your room.

When we were on the Epic, our butler (Roland) brought us all the menus from the specialty restaurants. Except for Teppenyaki, we had our dinners in the room. No need to worry about reservations!

He just asked us to write down what we wanted, from where, what time to have it delivered, and to have it to him by noon.

Oh, you can have a Haven Restaurant meal delivered too.

  5. I'm still waiting for cruise lines to enclose a smoking area in their casinos if they refuse to

make them smoke free . Or they can enclose the whole casino .

This is on them , not on the smokers . I'm now satisfied with the limited smoking areas on ships but Norwegian still won't enclose casinos .

This isn't the fault of smokers or non-smokers but NCL . $250 is just fine for a first offense

but only if it is actually enforced . I did like another posters suggestion of a bounty on illegal smoking reported by staff . It may however effect tips .

The Bliss has an enclosed ‘smoking casino’. If it works out well, expect to see them on new ships moving forward.

  6. Not good. It’s not a popular sport. But there is a chance you can see it at O’Sheehans. If it’s on ESPN, you may even be able to request it.

I wish people would quit saying there’s only one sports channel.

    IT’S JUST NOT TRUE!!!

When DW and I sailed, there was NFL football shown all week. Sunday at 1pm, Sunday at 4pm, Sunday night football, Monday night football, and Thursday night football. That was on CBS, FOX, ESPN, and NFL Network.

Ships have the ability to show those channels. So stop saying ‘you’re not in Kansas anymore.’ Stop misinforming people.

  7. Telling the person who set $50 aside every paycheck so that they could take an overdue honeymoon to tip what they can afford? Hell, they may be living close to paycheck to paycheck at home but they know that they have always talked about doing THIS cruise and wanted to do it right. They can't afford to overtip, they work hard for that money, and they also know that those employees work hard for their money and don't want to stiff them.

This is a very good point, and one that I had, admittedly, not considered.

Haven cruisers, just know that whatever you tip to your butler/steward/concierge, it will be appreciated.

  8. This is impressive!

    Thank you!

Now I need to find a list of cocktails.

Only remember margarita, piña colada, Bloody Mary and various martinis. :)

    Ask and ye shall receive!

Not my list. It’s ongoing and was started by someone else here on CC. If I knew their name, I’d give them credit. This list has been responsible for many a stagger back to my room, lol.

  9. Very true. But do you feel obligated to tip a person for simply doing their basic job?

And if you answer yes, how much to you tip the check in clerk? Or how about the person who shows you to your line?

Does the security guard who moved their line a little faster to get you on board rate a tip?

If none of those people rated a tip, why does the person who cleaned your room and did nothing else? And did you leave a tip for the housekeeping staff at the hotel you stayed at?

My point in this is not that people should not tip. It is to give information so that they can tip with the understanding that someone's entire salary is not based on these tips like some people try and claim.

You SHOULD tip for service, especially service above and beyond. I fully support this, as well as filling in good comment cards. (I think negative comment cards should be reserved for people who are constantly bad, not because they had a single bad day and that was when you encountered them.)

As I have pointed out before, I once tipped our butler $1,000 for a 7 day cruise for just DW and I, she did a fantastic job making DW's birthday cruise special. But I don't think that that should be the norm, nor do I tip my cabin steward simply because they cleaned my room and emptied my garbage.

I tip servers in a restaurant for doing their basic job. Because I know that they rely on tips to make a living. And that tip is adjusted up depending on the ‘above and beyond’ I receive. I will never tip below 20% because I used to work for tips, and understand what their counting on. That’s a personal choice. Empathy, if you will.

And yes, I did leave a tip for housekeeping at a hotel I stayed at just two weeks ago. (A Marriott in Tampa.) They make more than minimum wage and it was not required, but I did so because I thought they did an exemplary job. It’s wasnt a lot, but if I had to guess, I’d guess it was appreciated.

I’ve said in other threads, that the butlers I have had were extremely exemplary. Upon request, Roland went and found us a jar of pickle juice, for Christ sake!

I’ve never tried to express a ‘norm’ for tipping a butler. Or a room steward. Or a concierge. As a matter of fact, the concierge on my last cruise got nothing from me. Because they did nothing for me, other than telling me Cagney’s was booked up for the entire cruise. My only remarks on tipping have been...If they enhanced my cruising experience, they were compensated accordingly.

The butlers I have had the pleasure of having, have done that. The stewards I have had, have done that. And two bartenders I have had the pleasure of dealing with, have done that. And they were compensated accordingly. Those men and women made my vacation better than it would have been with out them. I don’t know, or care, what their base salary is.

I understand what your point is. Don’t feel you have to break the bank. And I agree with that. Don’t stretch your finances beyond your means. Tip what you feel they’ve earned. Nothing more, and certainly nothing less.

  10. Yeah but how do they know I’m having so many drinks that my tip needs to be $249, for example if My wife and I have 3 drinks a day each at $14 a drink I should tip 18% or 20% which is $2.80 approx. per drink per person per day that’s $117.60 in tips for the both of us for the 7 day cruise not $249.

Where I get aggravated is that they are basing the amount of tips to be charged based on how much they think I may spend in drinks not actual cost.

What if a restaurant charged you a $25 tip for your waiter the moment you walk in the door regardless of how much your actual meal was? Then if you have a $1,000 meal you really stuck it to your waiter and short changed them but If all you had was a sandwich you way over tipped them...just saying

Well, when I’m on vacation on a cruise ship, I start the day with mimosas and it only gets better as the day goes on. If I don’t drink the full value of the UBP (with gratuity) then I’m coming really damn close.

But I don’t look at it like you do. You’re looking at it strictly from a tipping perspective. I look at it from the cost of the drink perspective.

And I most definitely drink $249 worth of alcohol on a one week cruise.

My next cruise starts off with two sea days. That’s approximately 56 hours from the time I get on the ship until I hit the first port. I’m sure I’ll be over the $249 mark before that, lol.

  11. Let me ask you a question then....do you also Tip out the Haven Dining Staff or the Hostess? Both categories of this service group in the MDR's have been tipped out on other lines. If so why, and if not why not if you are willing to share your thoughts.

I’m not the poster you asked, but I’m giving you my response to the question nonetheless.

I do not, unless I feel they’ve gone ‘above and beyond’. They are included in the DSC. The butler is not. I’ve been lucky enough to have exemplary butlers on my last two (and only) Haven cruises (Maxi and Roland). And a couple of bartenders (Debbie and Oswald, both in the Haven). And Budi, our steward. Those four people received tips from us.

    Why?

Because THEY MADE OUR EXPERIENCE BETTER!!!

That is our qualification. If you enhance the cruise experience, you are compensated accordingly. Period.

We haven’t yet dined in the MDR. Between the Haven restaurant, SDP, and room service, we’ve never been to a MDR.

  12. Do all NCL ships have real chips/cards tables? I've mostly cruised on Carnival and they have electronic tables. Thanks!

The Epic does. And I’m going to assume that since NCL wants your experience to be consistent fleet wide, they all do.

There are also electronic tables on the Epic.
