  1. Why would you hang around with all your luggage in the Public Rooms for FIVE more hours?

Ummm... we had to be out of our rooms at 11:00 am. We were not cleared to disembark until 4ish. We didn’t have any choice but to be in the public areas for 5 hours.

  2. I witnessed a man outright refuse to sanitize his hands while staff were at sanitizing stations after the code red had been declared.

During the code red tables are sanitized after use in Terrace Cafe and a card placed on it stating when it will be available for next passenger...5 minutes for sanitizer to work. I witnessed a man sit down with a group and take a pen out of his pocket and change the time. When we questioned him he laughed and said a few minutes wouldn’t hurt.

I have heard women leave the washroom without washing their hands.

I believe illness is absolutely spread by passengers with the mentality that it won’t happen to them.

  3. There are different styles of Birks, some slightly less casual than others. I've worn black leather Birks in the MDR several times with no problem. Knowing that my feet are on the casual side, I probably make sure the rest of me is on the dressier side of country club casual. I have foot problems and some Birks allow me to walk comfortably.

Thank you! You and I are on exactly the same wavelength...yes Birks are almost a necessity for my feet but they are new and nice. And the rest of me will be dressed appropriately!

  4. Really means no flip flops. Hopefully our weather will be quite warm, more casual than you envision See you in Miami..

I expect to have a least 1 lecturer, maybe more. There will definately be naration thru the canal.

We are at the tail end of a two day blizzard so warm is going to be welcomed!

  5. We are going on our first Oceania cruise May 6-22, Panama Canal on Regatta. I have a couple of questions

Firstly I know the topic of dress is beaten to death on these boards but I still have a concern. I get country club casual....but I noticed it says no sandals in the grand dining room. Do you really have to wear closed toe shoes? I’m not talking beach flip flops...but comfortable sandals. Along the lines of Birkenstocks that aren’t 20 years old.

Also...how do I find out if there is a guest lecturer on our specific cruise? Or are they on all of them? Or only portions of the cruise?

Thank you in advance for input...these boards have been a wealth of information for me

  6. That's what's wonderful about travel...for every person that goes to a certain place you'll get that many different opinions. As a Canadian we've been going to Cuba for years...land based vacations. Food is subjective. I wouldn't blanket it as it all sucks. Some resorts are better than others I'm sure, and within each resort some restaurants are better than others. Yes...they are less refined in general. Room decor may be dated, etc. But the people are the most friendly we've ever come across. Truly beautiful people that make you feel like family. Havana I found fascinating....the architecture is stunning. Time warp? Yeah maybe..but what a unique experience!

  7. We will be visiting both of those along with others - we are really looking forward to it. Quite a change from Paris & London :D

It will be on Ponant Le Boreal in Aug/Sept this year. What is the weather likely to be that time of the year?

Weather is chilly for the most part. Today in Iqaluit we were at 10°C with 58 km/h wind gusts. But last week we hit 19°C with calm winds and gorgeous blue skies. Bring fleece jackets and definitely wind proof jackets. When the sky is clear the sun has some real strength but it may be windy. When in ports look for Inuit carvings...they are beautiful. Not sure where you are located but I don't think you can buy any sealskin products. We can carry them within Canada but I don't think outside. I have beautiful sealskin mitts that keep me toastie warm!

  8. We'll waive to you from our Northwest Passage cruise this summer :D

What ship and itinerary? We are in Iqaluit which does see limited cruise ship traffic...most go to Pond Inlet, Gjoa Haven and other smaller communities. You'll love the North....it is a beautiful, open, fascinating part of the world.

  9. northergirls, I see you are fairly new to Cruise Critic and wanted to say "welcome". Seeing your location you chose you CC name well, not many are more northern than you.

Ha! Yes. I challenge fellow CC members to a more Northernly locale!

  10. I've tried Googling this question but all the threads seem to be a few years old and I thought I could get more up to date information here. We are sailing on Regatta May 2018, Panama Canal. Does the ship hold our passports upon embarkation? And why? If so, does Oceania do this on all cruises or just certain itineraries?
