  1. First of  you are allowed to take hairdryers and straighteners on board. They also sell them on board. The ones on Oriana were the Dyson brand.

I usually take my own dryer but actually forgot to pack it so I had to use the travel type one provided. Even though my hair is short it wasn’t powerful enough to dry my hair as I like it. Thank goodness I had some straighteners!

  2. We are booked on Oriana's final cruise to the North Cape and Svalbard. 18 nights leaving Southampton on 22nd July. I've been to the North Cape before with P & O but I'm very excited about going even further north.

  3. This morning I booked Arcadia J014, October 2020. I rang the freephone number at 8.00 am and had to hang on for about 15 minutes.

I then spoke to a lovely guy called Andy. He got the booking, including our choice of cabin, sorted very quickly, and I received our confirmation email within ten minutes.

I asked for free car parking, which is what we have done on our previous cruises and also for our 2019 cruise.

Andy then told me that we also had on board credit of £75.00 each! Apparently it is a thank you from P & O for our custom and it seems there was a notification against our names on their system.

Up to now we have we have done six cruises and are on the Atlantic tier. Following our 2019 cruise we will be "promoted" to the Mediterranean tier so it seems that even "plebs" can receive little perks.

Quite a few people on various Facebook groups post negative comments about the P&O booking system and seem to prefer booking with TA's. Our experience this year and in previous years, including one booking whilst on board, has always been a good one.

I apologise if it appears I was criticising the views of others. I acknowledge that we are all entitled to a point of view.

What I do have a problem with is that some people on this forum express the view that the "able bodied" should use the stairs and not use the lifts.

In my post I described my pre surgery situation where as an "able bodied" person I had daily bouts of excruciating pain and had no option but to use a lift, even if it was just one floor, while at other times I could quite happily use the stairs.

There will be many people in similar situations, in no way considering themselves disabled but going through short term difficulties, which could make using the stairs a problem.

I fully intend on my next cruise to use the stairs all the time. This however will be my choice and not because of an unwritten rule that I should.

  5. I totally agree with your second para, but not the first. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and just because we may disagree with them is no reason to disparage their views.

As a wheelchair user's carer I have absolutely no problem with anyone using the lifts, but I would like a little more consideration from some passengers. This is very apparent just after muster when only seconds after the Captain has requested everyone to give priority to wheelchair users, there is a first come first served scrum around the lifts. I do admit that I now try to ensure we are at the entrance to the Glass House, our muster station, so that I can be one of the first into the lift lobby. and I will use the first lift that stops, even it is going in the wrong direction for us, because I know that all lifts coming up to deck 7 will be too full for a wheelchair.

  6. Having read all of this post I'm am at a loss for words at some of the judgemental comments on this post.

The bottom line is that lifts are available for all passengers whether disabled or not. Common courtesy to our fellow passengers would ensure that priority for lifts at busy times is given to those who are wheelchair bound or to those for whom using stairs would be a problem.

Unfortunately there lies the problem. Unless the disability is visible we have no way of knowing who amongst us has a problem.

Five years ago I was due to have back surgery two weeks after the end of my cruise. I was 57 at the time and looked reasonably fit. What my fellow cruisers would not have known was that periodically throughout the day I was experiencing excruciating bilateral sciatica. Some evenings on leaving the MDR I could hardly walk so to get to other decks, even just one floor, I had to use the lift. Other times when things were more settled I used to do my laps of the promenade deck and would use the stairs even if it was a bit painful.

I therefore might have been silently criticised by some passengers for using the lift if it was busy. As I didn't want to make a fuss it was not obvious that at that particular time I had a problem.

  7. Hang on a minute, are you suggesting that passengers should not be permitted to sit in lounges unless they are drinking, what about the show lounges?

My thoughts as well. We are all "paying customers". We have paid to be on the cruise. Surely we are allowed to sit anywhere there is a spare seat. Some people don't always want a drink at any given opportunity.

  8. My wife and I are on this cruise too. Never been to the Amazon, really looking forward to it. We had our yellow fever jabs a couple of years ago and are still current.

I would also be interested in advice on the visit from previous visitors, thanks.

    Brian & Carol.

Hi Brian & Carol. Not sure if you are aware that Yellow Fever inoculations are now life long and you no longer have to have a further jab after 10 years. The rules changed around September 2016. My certificate was due to expire in November 2016. I paid £10.00 at a travel centre for a new open ended certificate.

  9. Had a letter from P&O today about updating preferences. I assume this is to do with the new EU legislation all companies have to comply with. I've already done one for Cunard. So I tried to login to my P&O account and it wouldn't let me. So I registered again and that was all okay until I tried to validate the new registration at which point the site would not accept the link for the validation. When I tried just logging in now it sends a message back to say "Login Failed" whereas if I try to login with mu original password it now says "Password Invalid".

Anybody else had a similar problem. I thought I would ask on here before I tried ringing P&O as I know just how much help they give for IT problems!!

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

After reading numerous FB posts on this matter I registered both my husband and I online and updated our preferences. My husband received the mailing today but I didn't so I rang P&O just to check that all was ok on our records. Nothing was showing on their records despite all previous cruises etc showing on our on line accounts plus the ticked preferences and our acceptance of remaining in the Peninsular Club.

I would advise a call to P & O as there appears to be a glitch when updating on line. I rang the freephone number and got through in less than a minute.

  10. On Aurora one man won the individual cruise every day. I was told he was a frequent cruiser and memorized all the answers knowing that they would be asking the same questions this summer as last. Kind of takes the enjoyment away for everyone else. Maybe if you win you automatically lose one point next quiz, also 2 points for 2 consecutive wins etc

That happens in the Syndicate quiz.

  11. We've just arrived home from a fab cruise on Arcadia today. We didn't have any issues with toilets however, my parents, who were on A Deck Starboard had issues with their toilets for a couple of days in the 1st week. They were told a number of cabins were affected in their 'zone' and had been caused by people flushing hand towels down the toilets in the Public Areas. This resulted in hand towels being removed from toilets so hand dryers had to be used. All cabins were sent reminders of what should/shouldn't be flushed down the toilets. Even after the problem seemed to resolved there was a stinky smell on Promenade Deck Mid Ships where, surprisingly, people would still choose to sit?!?

I was on the same cruise and really enjoyed it.

Regarding the blocked toilets, I found it unbelievable that despite a verbal instruction over the tannoy at the beginning of the cruise as to the correct usage of the toilet system, large notices on the back of cubicle doors, signs in the bathrooms, additional notices delivered to cabins, and messages in the daily horizon, some passengers still thought the rules didn't apply to them resulting in an inconvenience to their fellow passengers.

  12. We have been through the Kiel Canal twice on Adonia at the end of a Baltic cruise. A wonderful experience. The captain announced that Adonia was the largest ship able to transit the canal. They had to lower the mast to clear the bridges and when we did go under there was very little clearance. The captain also made great use of the ship's hooter in reply to many small craft on the canal. On our second trip, four of the crew cycled the length of the canal to raise money for Macmillan. Lots of cheering and waving and more use of the ship's hooter. A superb day.

  13. No problem with extension leads or adapters. P&O tell you to bring your own on their FAQ page as they only have a limited number available. Just returned from Arcadia and no problems using them on board.

How interesting. It seems that P&O's left hand doesn't know what it's right hand is doing!!

Might as well take one then. Many thanks for posting this cruiser1955.

  14. Agree with Annie we always take an extension cable. The only stipulation is that it cannot be surge protected it must be a ordinary one. We leave it out in plain view.

Not sure where the O P got this information from but I do not think it is correct.

Dai, I read it on P&O cruise personaliser. Life on board/ safety on board/ use of electrical appliances. Last sentence reads:

"Personal extension leads are not permitted on board"

I have never taken a travel iron on a cruise but two years ago I did take an extension lead due to the lack of sufficient sockets in the cabin.

Just wondering if this is a recent change to security on board rules.

  15. I will shortly be cruising on Arcadia and last night read all the Information on cruise personaliser, just for a refresher, as it is two years since my last cruise ( touch of insomnia so I went on the iPad).

I notice that we are no longer allowed to take extension sockets on board and that all chargers have to be CE marked.

I was just wondering whether all P&O passengers actually read all the "small print" and whether everyone actually complies with these rules.

Do P & O check all phone chargers etc. and screen luggage to check whether passengers have banned items such as travel irons.

Please be assured I will comply with the rules but there will probably be some passengers who genuinely won't know if the are breaking them.
