  1. We're skiers, so we have brought plenty of long underwear, sweaters, turtlenecks, gloves, neck gaiters, warm ski hats, ski pants, ski jackets and other cold-weather clothing to make sure we stay warm.  We even brought our ski helmets and goggles just in case. When I checked the temps in Tromso, they were in the mid-20s. There are plenty of optional excursions for whatever your interests. We're taking two nighttime excursions to hopefully see the Northern Lights; two dog-sled excursions, one snowmobile excursion and a visit to the Ice Hotel.

  2. Just boarded the Viking Sky for the cruise up the coast of Norway "In Search of the Northern Lights."  Both my wife and I brought a computer and a cell phone. On five previous Viking Ocean cruises (plus one Viking River cruise), we've been able to log each device onto the wifi system all at the same time.  Today, after I connected my computer, I tried to connect my phone and got a message that I had reach the limit of number of devices connected (which at that point was one) and I would have to sign that one off to sign on a new one. Guest services told me this is a new policy designed to save bandwidth and increase speed, and said my wife could sign in and create her own account that also limited her to one device at a time.  I have to admit that the speed is much peppier than it's been before (possibly due in part to the fact that we're sitting in port in Bergen).  However having to constantly re-log in on one device and disconnect the wifi on the other device is extremely frustrating and time-consuming.

  3. My wife and I did the Viking West Indies tour in February 2017 aboard the Star. To be honest, after a while all the islands tended to look the same. We opted for some of the "out of the ordinary" excursions. We especially enjoyed the Barbados Photo Adventure Tour, the Aerial Tram above the rainforest in St. Lucia, the Mystic II catamaran cruise with grilled lobster lunch in Antigua, and snorkling in St. Maarten.

  4. You don't say which cruise, but if your itinerary includes Tallinn, Estonia, be sure to buy one or more bottles of Vana Tallinn. It's very hard to find in the U.S. It's a delicious, dark liqueur with a hint of licorice, made only in Tallinn. It's sold in three strengths: 40% (80 proof), 45% (90 proof) and 50% (100 proof). We bought the 45%, and it's plenty strong. You can buy it in the town, but the little bazaar by the dock has it, and slightly cheaper.

  5. Cruzzzinma, my wife and I were on the same cruise. I agree with pretty much everything you said in your original post, and I also agree that Viking Ocean is nicer than Viking River (but both are excellent). VO has taken customer service several steps beyond that on VR, and I'm surprised VR hasn't picked up on some of the improvements.

Of the excursions on the West Indies cruise, we especially enjoyed the Barbados Photo Adventure Tour, the Aerial Tram above the rainforest in St. Lucia, the Mystic II catamaran cruise with grilled lobster lunch in Antigua, and snorkling in St. Maarten. But I also agree with the person who said the islands tend to blur together.

  6. I agree. The "whenever" drinks are very nice to have. Wine paring in Chef's table is incomparable to non package plus you have a special glass for each wine/drink. Sorry, I know that some people don't care about that but we like it and do the same at home.

I also tried Armagnac I never tried before. Kier (spell?) from Torshavn ( Viking Star) introduced me to it and I loved it. BTW, he is very nice guy.

If you have a Silver Package, you don't need to worry about mini bar. We used 1 mini bottle of vodka for DIY air fresher to stabilize essential oils. That was it. You have any kind of drinks anywhere including Mimosa with breakfast ;) that there is no time to use mini bar.

We agree. Love the opportunity to try premium and exotic wines and cocktails. But to each his/her own.

  7. It's a very simple matter to post a message that a site is being updated while the rest of the site is being worked on. Which is what makes me doubt that explanation. It apparently was also "updated" in June. It shouldn't need to be "updated" that often.

  8. Several. We're doing the Cities of Antiquities & The Holy Lands this fall. Next spring we're doing Empires of the Mediterranean, then next fall Capitals of the Far East (Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Seoul (if it's till there!), Beijing and 3 other Chinese ports). For spring 2019 we have booked Bangkok, Bali & Beyond (Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and a couple others).

Believe it or not, we had never EVER taken a cruise prior to last summer, when a friend persuaded us to take the Viking Ocean cruise of Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea. We had always thought we wouldn't like cruising, but we fell in love with it. Earlier this year we did the Viking West Indies ocean cruise, then in June we did the Viking River cruise from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland, after which we spent a week driving around Switzerland.

  9. A side note - After numerous failed attempts (using my iPad), I got a pop up message (that would not go away) telling me my IP address is being used by multiple other computers (serious hacking possibility and identity theft if not fixed immediately) and to call Apple tech support number 1-800-858-2160 toll free for help. I called the number, and the helper asked me to turn on my computer to type in some www.techsupport address. The next steps, I believe, would be to give him the control of my computer, so he would help fix my problem. An alarm immediately popped up in my mind. Being cautious, I asked for some means, so I could call or check online to confirm he was indeed from Apple Tech Support. After he gave me no direct answers, I thanked him and hung up.

You were correct. That was definitely a hacker.
