I you decide on Tarquinia, look up cotral bus web page for times, every day but a sunday,
2.5e day ticket from local news seller bus stop opposite the church 200 yds from port entrance
It's only $3 and 11 minutes by train to Tarquinia. Easy to do on your own.

If you buy minis just to smuggle on board it would be cheaper to buy a bottle from room service. You get 50ml for about $2-3. A bottle is 1000ml and is about $20-25. Thats 20x mini cost. Just take what you want and put it well wrapped in your luggage and nothing will happen. I pay less than $10 for a 1.75 of vodka (brand) so minis don't pay. Never have been stopped at initial boarding and we take 2 1.75's.
I got caught. Luggage was held overnight and had to line up and pay $15 per bottle wine corkage. Don't know about booze but I think they might confiscate it. I am trying plastic bags with vodka this time. See how it goes. Get them on Amazon.

You got it right. It is just a taxi ride. Carl (driver from Orkney taxi) never spoke however we heard other drivers were more talkative. We called him the Driver Stone. But there was free guided tour at Brodgar and a tour was included in admission at Skara Brae and we brought the ships newsletter that explained things. 6 people, 3 hour taxi was 20 pounds each! Ship tour was about 6 times that!
quote=yaletownboy;51430410]Does anyone know if there's a difference in seeing Orkney in taxis versus taking a 'Tour'?
For example, does Craigie's Taxi provide a guided tour or provide information like a guide does as you're going to the site?
Does a 'tour' involve a separate guide (vs driver) coming to the site with you and 'talking' about the historical significance of the site?
As taxi fares seem to be 'regulated' for tours, it is by the hour but my impression is that it's just a fee for 'taking you there'.
What, if any, is the major differences in people's experiences (for those who actually have gone on these 'tours' or have used companies such as Craigie's Taxi.
Thanks
