  1. Thanks for sharing your experience. We’ve booked MSC after previously sailing HAL and Celebrity. A little concerned about the “pushiness” you’ve described and the general lack of politeness we take for granted on American-cruise lines. I’m also curious to see how the food compares. Sounds like it’s a different experience - a little less flexible, but not terrible. That said, there’s only one way to find out so we will roll the dice and hope for the best.

  2. Amazing thread, thanks for taking the time to answer each query. We just booked the 12/20/18 Divina out of Miami, and we were assigned cabin 12126. After perusing all 42 pages of this thread, what I surmise is that:

    (1) this is an accessible cabin, so it may be a bit larger;

    (2) the cabin is in the recessed section, so the overhang from Deck 14 will block the sun most of the day; and

    (3) the balcony is wide but not very deep.

Am I missing or misconstruing anything? I like the concept of having shade, but I’m worried that the overhang might be a bit too much shade. I’m also concerned that the field of view might be restricted given that the cabin sits in the recessed area.

I would welcome your suggestions as to whether I should strive to secure a different cabin. For reference, we are a party of three, we prefer midship locations because of the ship’s movement, and we are booked in the B2 category.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge with all of us.

  3. Just had a look at 6177 - wonderful cabin and location! I just need a midship cabin - like needing a particular pair of socks when I play golf, I need to book a Portside ( or as near to midship as possible while keeping DH happy too ) cabin and all is good.

    Superstitions aren’t they something? 🧜

We were in 8076 and loved the location. Midship, steps from elevator, and a decent sized balcony (two lounge type chairs plus a table and two additional chairs).

  4. I'm calling baloney on the bolded statement above about lack of entertainment. Crew News, who most of you know from his postings on this board, was aboard the Noordam last summer from Vancouver to Seward, and he posted the "When and Where" brochures for nights 2-6 on his website. Here are the links to each of those brochures. Scroll down to the last page of each day to see what entertainment was available:

So, stage shows, comedians, BB King's All Stars, Piano Bar entertainer, Adagio Strings, all while on a port-heavy cruise. That's not "absolutely no entertainment" as far as I can tell.

Sorry for the delayed response - just noticed your post. I was not on the June sailing, and I can very much assure you that, on our August sailing, there were no comedians or stage shows, as that was our biggest disappointment about the cruise and the primary reason we are trying a new cruise line now. Sure, they had trivia, art auctions and piano bar etc., but that’s not what I, personally, would consider “entertainment.”

We actually loved the cruise otherwise. Staff was great, balcony was huge, and food in the MDR was superb for our tastes. But the entertainment blew.

  5. I assume you are talking about the Reflection, right?

You are correct, both have the "smaller" of the very large hump balconies. Also, they both have the bed by the bath.

There are some differences - one is on the port side, one is on starboard. This might be a factor for you on a TA, and depending on the direction.

From one balcony, your view will be toward the aft, from the other, it will be forward.

    What matters to you?

Yes, I am referring to the Reflection. I wanted to confirm that both had the smaller hump balconies, and if there were any other considerations I should be cognizant of. Your insight is helpful and much appreciated.

  6. The early and late seating times are designed to match up to show times. The early seating time allows you to attend the late show. We prefer to dine early and go to the late show so I would choose that over the late seating dinner. I think the early seating gets filled' date=' as does Select Dining. If that is your preference- and you are assigned to the late seating, ask to be put on the waiting list for your first choice.[/quote']

Thanks! This is very helpful info. We have reserved the 6pm time, so that should work well with our schedule. Thanks again for taking the time to answer; I hope you enjoy the cruise!

  7. We did the Noordam this past summer from Vancouver to Seward. I can echo the sentiment of others on this thread: the ship is very much in need of refurbishment. That said, we found the food in the MDR superb, and the staff was great. The other big downside is the absence of entertainment. Folks often refer to the “underwhelming” entertainment on HAL. In our case, there was absolutely no entertainment unless you count the trainings on how to use Microsoft word and Skype or some cooking demos. “How to be there without being there” (Skype demo) was literally the title of the “show”. We were looking forward to a comedy show or something but there was no such entertainment at all.

Having said all that, we did enjoy the cruise and especially glacier bay which was absolutely breathtaking.
