  1. The traffic that day in NYC will be ridiculous.

Why are you staying an hour outside NYC? Why not stay closer to the river in Jersey?

Just uber in around 10am to the 911 area and spend the day downtown. Then if you really want to you can uber up to Central Park and then back to your hotel but battery park will suffice and that's right next to 911.

Order uber XL or a van They will have room for a wheelchair in the trunk

It will probably cost more than driving and parking but less headaches.

This assumes you fold the wheelchair and you son can sit in the car

If you have a handicapped equipped vehicle then if course you drive in...pay to park an oversized car...but please just stay in the downtown area. Less hassle

  2. Sailing out of New York in early September. We are three adults including my adult son who is in a wheelchair. We were thinking of driving in a day earlier and do one day around NYC. I would like to see Central Park, 911 memorial, Empire State Building. Does anyone with experience in New York think this is possible with a wheelchair. Is parking available in an around these sites. My husband thinks it is not doable but I would like to use this opportunity to see a few sites. We are staying about an hour outside if NYC so we would just drive in for the day for sightseeing. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.
That is a very ambitious itinerary for 1 day. We went to the 911 Memorial and spent

4 - 5 hours there and the Freedom Tower. The Empire State Building is not worth going to see. Central Park is beautiful. As to parking all I can say is it's tight and very expensive. We take a bus or train to NY because parking is so damn expensive but we don't travel with a wheel chair.

  3. I always tip porters. Last week I asked our porter in NYC about tips and he said most people tip about $1.00 bag. I also asked about the union and he said the porters are members of the longshoremen union and most of them have 6 figure incomes.

  4. Hi - we were in Haven on Breakaway this past Feb. They save a large block of seats strictly for Haven guests. Your concierge will let you know what time to meet at their desk (in the Haven lounge) - and they escort you right into the theatre. We saw Rock of Ages and Burn the Floor twice each - we really enjoyed it. Have a great trip - we loved the BA and the Haven is fantastic :)

Just wanted to add - if you miss the Haven escort, they do give away any empty Haven seats to people who had been waiting on standby or latecomers to the show. So to ensure your spot, make sure you go with the concierge.

Take ear plugs because they crank the volume so loud it hurt my wife's and my ears. Neither was enjoyable. We just sailed on the Breakaway last week and it was our least enjoyable cruise.

  5. Food aside because it is so subjective, have you tried NCL with their perks. Getting 3 Specialty Dining and Drinks included in price makes it worth it.

Sailing Carnival in May so will witness "just how bad it is" as some suggest.

I'm guessing I won't starve, will find things that are "eatible" and be able to roll with what happens.

I don t think Carnival is any worse that Royal Caribbean. I also don't let it affect how I enjoy my meal but it definitely is lack of respect for cruisers that adhere to the rules in the MDR and specialty restaurants. We were in one specialty restaurant on The Allure and everyone was dressed properly except for one table with 6 family members that were in shorts, 2 wore wife beater shirts, and the women were in pool or beach attire. They shouldn't have been allowed in acco riding to Royal's dress code.

  6. DH and I have been taking cruises since 1994 and have watched the dress codes lessen as society craved less formal options. I understand that people who have to fly to cruise ports have to pay for luggage or extra luggage and more formal clothes take up a lot of luggage space. However, after 44 cruises and 31 on Carnival, the dress code for elegant nights is pretty straightforward, but passengers still wear baseball caps and jeans with holes in them, women wearing short shorts, let alone t-shirts with offensive sayings on them. They are still allowed in the MDR on elegant nights. Is that what people really wear to restaurants that cater to elegant dining? Why even have a dress code if it is continually ignored? I just don't get it.
Our one Carnival cruise I said Soweto bff to the waiter ahhh out shorts and t- shirts in the MDR. He agreed that it isn't allowed but he wasn't allowed to say anything about it to the passengers he had to tell the manager who was violating the rule. Two nights later the same people came to the MDR I shorts, t- shirts, sandals, and baseball caps. I haven't seen that on Royal Caribbean but I'm sure it happens.

  7. Well as someone that always sails from NJ because we live here and someone that loves the bigger ships this is great news. If indeed this happens I would love to see a 200,000 ton ship based in NJ, and sail on one as well of course.
We live in Baltimore and would love to have a 200,000 ton ship sail out of a port within 50 -100 miles from here but they'd have to build a new pier and terminal that could handle it.

  8. I agree with Boston Joe. You are going on a beautiful ship, with good food, entertainment, service, and ports of call, ENJOY THE TRIP! Don't go looking for problems, look for additional ways to enjoy the trip. The porters (stevadores) have a difficult job don't you make it any harder. I've witnessed people verbally abusing them in Baltimore and at Port Everglades and I can't figure out what the purpose of treating someone poorly is.

  9. We were told that the "porters" are not employees off the cruise line, their services are contracted by their stevadore company. Our experience has always been great so I've given either $10 or $20 depending on the number of bags. When we got off of the Anthem in Bayonne the porter insisted on walking us to our car in the parking garage and he lifted the luggage onto the car. He got a $30 tip.
