A taxi (or private car/driver) is almost always a better option, if one does not have a budget! But money is an issue for many folks which is why a few of us are always giving public transportation suggestions :). Sometimes the price differential can be small, but often taxis can cost hundreds of Euros more than a train or bus.

Would this be feasible? Ship docks at Naples at 7:00 a.m. and leaves at 5:00 p.m. Would you recommend a tour or taxis? Thanks for your advice.

In my opinion surely better a taxi avoiding hurry and stress...

We are planning a Pompeii & Vesuvius excursion from Naples excursion when we are in Naples for the day.

The cruise ship price per person for this excursion is £72pp and the only other operator I have seen so far to take in both locations is Viator, which is £80pp.

Does anyone have other operators they could recommend ?

We are doing our first Med cruise on Sept 6th on the Norwegian Epic our of Rome. I was stunned to see the prices on their website for their excursions especially the Pompei, Sorrento, etc location. $467.00 Canadian for one person for the tour we are interested in which seems incredibly expensive. Can anyone recommend some reliable private tour companies for that port as well as the Florence/Pisa stop.

Whaaaaat... 467 Canadian dollars each??? Look if you need help in Naples for Amalfi coast tour Pompeii or what you desire contact a guy that we used for our excursion... I suggest him because Now for me is a family friend..and i think is the same for all people that use his service..just i can say that price you showed for person is pratically what all of us paid for the total tour ... He also has contact for Livorno and Rome... but surely.. he represent the best experience of our cruise

Post-cruise we took the train from Rome to Venice. We had two large suitcases (too large for overhead shelf) so we left them in the luggage rack at the front of the train car. My husband saw them there about an hour before we reached Venice, but one of them was stolen before we reached our stop. No fun to spend the first hour in Venice reporting the theft and filling out a police report. Good news is that trip insurance should cover some of the loss. Be aware!!!

Pay attention to the gipsy... lots of pick pocket too in Rome Venice Barcelona

Done!! What i can say... i read in these posts always same company with Good services and Good prices... Now i can say probably most of them ignore this great tour guy absolutely the most cheaper and interesting... wonderful and friendly Ciro who catered to our every need and personally adapted our taxi tour for what we wanted to see, met us straight off the ship and took us along the Amalfi Coast calling at various panoramic viewpoints along the way. We stopped at a cliff point overlooking the stunning Positano, which was his personal recommendation, before stopping in Sorrento for 2 hours. We were then treated to a lovely pizza, before stopping at Pompeii and then finally being taken for coffee and authentic Italian pastry in the historic centre of his hometown of Naples.
