  1. As far as renewing the passport, you have two options. You can mail in a DS82 with appropriate fee and old passport, or make an appointment at a State Department passport center ( which you seem to understand because you said it was an hour's drive.) Passport Acceptance Agencies (post office, library, etc.) do not accept normal renewals. You need to make an appointment at the State Department Center. Some, like in Connecticut, take walk-ins after appointments have been taken care of. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  2. I just went through this with my 1 year old grandson. My husband and I have legal custody of the baby and we needed to get his passport. We submitted the certified copy of the court order and the birth certificate. The person who took the paperwork didn't want to accept the paperwork and I insisted that she process the paperwork. Both my attorney and the Judge said that this document would be all we needed. The clerk took the paperwork reluctantly and two weeks later we had the passport for the baby and a couple of days later we had all the original paperwork.

Donna is correct. In situations where an individual has been granted custody through court order, the adult only needs a certified original copy of the court order plus birth certificate. Also, make sure that you have an original long form copy of the birth certificate. The birth certificate has to be issued by a state, county or municipality. Hospital birth certificates are not valid to apply for a passport. The originals will be submitted, along with one photocopy of each, with the passport application. The originals will be returned separately from the new passport.

  3. I called Hilton two nights ago about a Nov. 10 booking at the Caribe Hilton. The representative said that I was still booked and should be okay “for now.”

I emailed the general manager directly. They are evaluating damage. All reservations through Oct. 31st are canceled. They are taking no new reservations through Dec. 31st. He said they should have a better idea in about a week about my Nov. 10th reservation.

I booked Holliday Inn Express Condado as a back-up. They stated on their Facebook page that they are open as of Oct. 4th.

  5. Just a heads up. I checked the list and they have the Hilton brands not accepting new reservations until Oct. 31. However, the Hilton web-site for most of their hotels is showing Dec. 31. I have two reservations in November at two different Hilton hotels, pre and post cruise. I called the number Hilton listed for more information to find out if I even have rooms. After 20 minutes on the phone, they don't know if the hotel will honor our reservation. There are refugees staying in some of the hotels that are open. They told me to call the manager during normal business hours, but good luck getting through to the hotel. The Hilton rep told me not to go since they just had a hurricane and everything is an utter mess. I will try the hotels tomorrow and see if I can talk to a manager to find out. I hate to book somewhere else, as I booked both with points. I may have to if I can't find anything out the next few days.
