  1. Shortly I'll be joining a Viking River cruise and am trying to decide whether or not to buy the Silver Spirits drink package.  I know I can look at the wine list upon boarding and decide then, but it would be nice to peruse it now.

I'd appreciate it if someone could post the wine list who is on (or has recently been on) a Viking River Cruise.

    Thanks!

  2. I have just returned from a Holland America cruise where I had booked a "Have It All" fare that included the Signature Beverage Package.  The normal price of this package is $54.95/day.  The Elite Package is $59.95/day or a difference of $5.

When trying to upgrade on board I was told that the upgrade fee would be $10/day instead of $5 since I had purchased the drink package originally at a discount.

So be warned if you are planning up upgrade on the ship.

  3. In response to Travelbug's comments, the train from Seward does not go to the airport.  It stops in Girdwood (45 minutes south of Anchorage) and the main terminal just on the north side of downtown Anchorage.

It should be easy to get transportation from the Anchorage train station to the airport...taxi or lyft/uber.

  4. rsldonk - I was just in Anchorage last week and visited the Museum on 6/10/21.  The museum was open most days I believe.  The Earthquake and Aviation exhibits are no longer there, they have been replaced by other short term exhibits, but the Native Alaska and Fine Arts sections are still there and are very worthwhile.  The gift shop is also good.

  5. If you are stopping in Anchorage at any point in your land/sea cruise, please try to spend at least a couple of hours visiting the Anchorage Museum (downtown).  It has wonderful displays of Alaska Native artifacts as well as fine Alaskan Art.  There are also good exhibits about the March, 1964 Earthquake and Alaskan Aviation.  I've been to the Museum many times over the years and it is always time well spent.

  6. Thanks so much for all of your comments.  It sounds like just use common sense and common courtesy whether you travel in a group or not in a group.

Our group consists of 3 siblings + spouses, and 1 in-law couple.

While we enjoy each others' company, we plan to interact with as many other friendly people as possible...always one of our favorite parts of a vacation.

Besides, we already know most of our own stories and are looking for new ones!

  7. In 2022 I will be part of a 4 couple (8 adult) group on a River Cruise.  We definitely want to interact with other Travelers, and will not always be together in our large group.  Having heard some horror stories of group travel behavior, I am eager to avoid being one of "those" people.  Of course I understand the obvious irritants of noise, hogging prime space, and dominating gatherings.  But I'm anxious to hear your stories of bad group behavior you have seen on River Cruises.  I know bad behavior abounds on some Ocean Cruises, but with River Cruises having fewer passengers and perhaps a more mature demographic, look forward to a cruise full of fun for everyone.

  8. I've taken the floibanen a number of times over the years.  I both purchased tickets in advance and waited in line at a less busy time of year.  If you are going during the summer and the weather is good, I suggest buying them in advance.  If you are concerned about weather, you can wait until 1-2 days before you plan to go.  But if you are going regardless of the weather, and like to plan your day far in advance, I'd go ahead and buy them now.

  9. Being an organizational freak, I’m interested in getting the actual measurements (length, width, & height) of the drawers and above drawer bins in a DV stateroom on the Viking Sky.  It will help me decide which packing cubes and boxes I will bring on board.  Given the limited storage in this size of stateroom, I’d like to maximize my storage potential.  And yes, I realize that I’m being a tad obsessive.

  10. I'll be doing this itinerary in June, so will be anxious to hear your comments after you take the cruise.

    As for my past experience:

Oslo - Frogner Park to see all of the Vigeland statues is a "must see".  I also love the Norwegian Folk Museum, Viking Ship Museum, Radhuset (City Hall), Munch Museum, and Akarshus Fortress (probably right next to cruise ship dock).  Decades ago I visited the Kon Tiki Museum, and was interested because I had recently read the book.  But I'm not sure it will warrant a second visit for me.  If the weather is nice, it's fun to stroll up Karl Johan's Gate and see the Palace.  I'm planning to visit the Fram Museum for the first time this trip, and will revisit all of my other favorites listed above.

Bergen - the Mt. Floyen Funicular is always great...did it the last time in pouring rain.  As long as the clouds are high enough that you can still see the city, it's worth a trip.  Also worthwhile are Grieg's House and Fantoft Stave Church.  I'd hate to pick between them.  We're arriving 2 days early so have time to see lots of sites and hopefully visit relatives.

Eidfjord - Absolutely the Scenic Flam Railway is worthwhile.  It was one of our favorite tours on an earlier cruise that docked in Flam.  It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

We also will be buying the Bergen Card and use mass transit to visit most of the sites on our own.  We'll buy it in advance, and pick it up at the airport since it also includes free light rail transportation from the airport to city center.  We'll then have a short taxi ride to our hotel, but it will save a lot of money.

    Happy Travels!

  11. In July my husband and I will be disembarking from a Viking Ocean cruise in Copenhagen and making our way by ourselves to the airport.  Since we didn't arrange our air travel through Viking, my understanding is that they will not offer transportation for us to the airport.

We have an 11am flight.  We are not interested in shlepping luggage onto a bus or train.

Does anyone have experience taking a taxi or other private transportation here?  Do you need to arrange it in advance or just pick up a taxi waiting outside the ship terminal?

    Any idea of costs?

    Thank you so much!

  12. Mapquest shows that it takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive from Eidfjord to Aurland, so it would be doable...if somewhat of a time crunch.  I first heard about the shoe factory when looking at Viking Ocean's video on their Eidfjord excursions site.  So even though Viking doesn't have an excursion there, I thought there might be someone who has a tour.  Since I've already been to Flam, and other areas near Eidfjord, I probably won't do a Viking excursion...unless I do the Kayaking tour instead of going to Aurland.  It's an awfully long drive just to buy some shoes!
