  1. Hi we have now booked our second cruise after a fantiastic time on the Discovery last month- The Fjords Explorer next August.

The kids loved playing shuffle board and table tennis and we really enjoyed sitting in the glass house after dinner. Therefore, I'm asking is there table tennis on the Explorer (which deck) and is there something similar to the glass house where we can sit and relax in a evening and look out onto the fjords with a drink. (preferably inside or at least sheltered because it's the very end of August) Thanks

  2. Fenreef, I am also driving up to the port - we are just off junction 29 M1 so a bit of a treck for us too but been told its quite an easy route. Planning to stop off a wetherby services to break up the journey. Im not too keen on driving the distance but looking forward to the result- a great holiday!. Again we have booked a premier inn so not the rush in the morning .

I wasn't sure of the procedure at the port but thanks to peoples replies I feel a bit more confident in what to expect.

  3. We've booked inside for this year (an inside plus because of 4 of us) we were alittle worried as our first cruise, but as a friend told us, it gets you out of the cabin more to see the scenery and explore, no light coming through early morning (i have to have it dark to sleep well) and perfect if all you use it for is sleeping and showering/ changing. I can however see advantages of a balcony cabin especially for couples who may want to sit out on the balcony but for us with kids im sure we will off around the ship exploring instead so we are happy to be in an inside cabin.

  4. We are sailing from Newcastle - Port of Tyne in July. We can embark from 1230 with the ship sailing at 1600hrs. Just out of interest is there an initial rush to get on the ship at 1230? We are staying in the premier inn the night before so are already there anyway but thinking may linger in the shopping centre if queues are long. Sorry for the "how long is a piece of string question" but really hate queuing which is one reason we are so looking forward to not flying this year. Thanks

  5. We booked early for this summers cruise for a few reasons. 1. The price was what we were willing to pay

    2. New to cruising and didnt know if the price fluctuated and 3. There are four of us and for the cabin type we wanted (inside plus) there were limited 4 berth cabins.

The price stayed pretty constant apart from the odd time when a balcony cabin came up only slightly higher than we paid . Also had we booked now we would have had to have 2 cabins.

We are sailing from Newcastle so maybe not factoring the price of flights helped.

Having said all this i will be keeping an eye on price variations throughout summer for future reference and maybe a time when there maybe just 2 of us and we are not as restricted on dates

  6. Hope this doesnt sound like a silly question but what is the temperature like on board in the public areas and cabins.? (Marella Discovery) Does it get particularly stuffy in places or quite cool? Or does it seem to be a comfortable room temp throughout. Just planning my wardrobe for the Magnificent fjords July 2018. Thanks

  7. Just to add to the dress code - having an 18 year old son can i ask if black jeans would be acceptable, with a smart casual top in the either the buffet or MDR on the Marella Discovery (he will be dressing up on the dress to impress night though)

    Thank you

  8. Hi first time cruiser here. im wanting to know a little more about the 'dress to impress" night on the Marella Discovery. Our family of 4 intend to dress as we would for an evening meal out at a nice restaurant, however, didn't want to feel underdressed if its dinner jackets and dresses.

What are others experience of the dress to impress night? Is it a mixture of smart/casual or does everyone tend to really dress up?

Also what else tends to be planned on that night? Photos with captain? Special entertainment etc....

    Thanks

  9. Just had a glance at summer 2019 online. Bit disappointed that i cant see any 7 day cruises from either southhampton or newcastle in the school summer holidays - probably me wishful thinking- it would certainly have kept the cost lower with not flying.

  10. Hi thinking of treating ourselves to some perfume etc whilst on board Discovery in july (Norway). Im guessing there is a duty free shop? Is it restricted on opening times dependent on where the ship is?Also wanted to ask wether its worth buying perfumes onboard or are the prices pretty much similar to those in shops in the uk? We are particularly interested in Estee lauder perfume and pacco raban one million. Thanks

Ps might get my husband to treat me to a new pandora charm if they are sold onboard too (i have my eye in the cruise ship one!)

  11. Thanks everyone- it makes me all the more excited. This is our first cruise and im sure from what people have told us and what we have read on these boards we are going to love it.

Have a brilliant cruise Jarra23- and yyztravels i think we are going to keep waking up in the night too to take in the scenery

Again thanks for all your replys.
