  1. Hello,

I am also a Gibraltar local and ollienbertsmum has got it pretty much spot on!

I have had a good experience at both The Rock Hotel and The Caleta Hotel for afternoon tea so either is a decent shout. I would recommend the Caleta Hotel just for the gorgeous beach views! If you are interested in sitting near boats, there is an area called Queensway Quay that has several lovely restaurants for afternoon tea, including The Lounge and The Waterfront. All these establishments I've mentioned do have facebook pages so I would drop them a message a month or two before you head on over here to make a reservation.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Hello "John Bull"

Thank you.  I had expected that UK coins would be accepted as that is what I used when in the Falklands to pay for sets of coins.  The bank there had them in bags ready for tourists!!

I want to get circulation coins at "face" not in the "smart and expensive" collectors packs.  I just want a "type" set.

    Hi Mike,

Gibraltarian local here! Please do visit the post office at 104 Main Street, I am sure they have coins sets and stamps for you to purchase from the philatelic shop. You can't miss it, big red British post box outside the front door. Around a 10/15 minute walk from the port.

If you just want 'normal' everyday coins, visit any shop in Main Street, pay in cash and ask politely for your change in Gibraltar pounds. Cant imagine that would be a problem whatsoever.

    Have a wonderful trip!

  3. Thanks for posting those. I assume you're planning your next cruise, it's the only way not to be depressed after a cruise I find.

Been searching since waiting in the airport on our way home. At the moment we are looking at Symphony (again!) for summer 2019 or Anthem Christmas 2019. No doubt there will be another live report whenever my next cruise may be :)

  5. Thanks for the fab review; without offending any of our US friends it’s great to read a review from a “European” point of view.

Now very much looking forward to getting on board in 10 weeks time, can’t wait…

What’s the name of the FB Naples foodie page? This I need to follow!

You are welcome! I hope you have a great time in 10 weeks. I miss it already.

The page is called Napoli Food Porn. I could spend hours just looking at all the pictures.

  6. Hi Joe,

Looking forward to your review. I just left the Symphony yesterday and the withdrawal symptoms are real. I did a live review too, check it out! I’ll leave the link.

Not sure if you are aware but depending on your phone provider you will have free data at all ports as roaming is now free all over Europe. I am on O2 and didn’t purchase Voom I just used my data bundle as per normal at no extra cost. Only catch was I didn’t have data at sea but it was quite healthy for me to stop scrolling aimlessly through Love Island memes for a few hours.

Go to El Nacional for dinner in Barcelona. It’s a selection of four restaurants, been to them all and they can’t be faulted. Also try going inside the Sagrada familia or Casa Batlo. Have the best time!

PS Also love that video (my partner is from Fort William area so I am well versed in Scottish humour)

  7. Great review, thanks again.

70 days to go..... I just bought the Cinque Terre tickets online too which should save a bit of time. They just have one of those QRs on so I guess you have to swap them for a 'real' ticket somewhere?

Im not entirely sure you know. There will be people to ask at the station I’ve no doubt but it would seem counter productive to have to queue up in the long line if you’ve already purchased your tickets! Hope your countdown goes quickly.

  8. I have to ask, what is the drink you took a picture of on day 5?? I have got to try it on our October 28th transatlantic on symphony. Your review was awesome thanks so much!!

You’re welcome! That drink was called Love Connection. I had read someone recommending it so put it on my list of things to try. It was three different flavours mixed together so it took a long time for the bar tender to make. Was super yummy though.

  9. Thanks so much all. Compasses will be coming over the next few days.

    I was bored on the plane and decided to do another little post about our week. I’ve narrowed it down to very few points but it was hard. SO many pros I could have included! From the comfiness of the beds to the deluxe drinks package. Here are a few of my Symphony pros and cons;

    Pros

    1. Piano Guy. Every time I found him I ditched Rob and hopped in the lift! Saw on a different Symphony live report by Glitterati that he loved Muse so I asked him to play some and that he did. He just managed to put a smile on every single person’s face and it was great to see.

    2. El Loco Fresh. I am so disappointed we only went here once. The salsa station just had everything imaginable. It was tasty and so easy and very popular.

    3. The service. I am loyal to Royal for not only the fun but the impeccable service from every single person on board. From Michele the CD to the guy mopping the floor. Everyone seemed happy and actually pleased to be there.

    4. Aqua Theatre. Being my first Oasis class ship I was blown away by how insanely awesome the Aqua Shows were. Big thumbs up from me.

    5. My Time Dining. This was my first time on MTD and I would undoubtedly do it again. Whilst a traditional dining time may work very well for a large group, being a party of 2 we got to experience all three MDR decks, we got to sit next to the window and we met a variety of lovely people. If you don’t mind having it switched up and are a party of 2/4 or so go for it. We never waited more than around 10 minutes and that was on boarding day. Every other day we were sat down pretty much instantly. Great flexibility for our chilled out cruising style.

    6. Solarium + Solarium Bistro. It was very very VERY hard to say goodbye. I shall miss late night Baileys and Banana Coladas in the hot tub as well as the relaxed Mediterranean style food offered.

    Cons

    1. Smoking in the casino. This really spoilt the use of the casino for us and we only went in once and didn’t even stay and avoided passing through at all times. RC really need to start protecting their staff’s health more and ban smoking in enclosed spaces. It really made Deck 4 stinky! Out on deck is fine.

    2. The sales. We were asked around 5 times on the first day and must have been asked around 20 times the rest of the cruise between us if we had purchased speciality dining. I understand they want to make the sales and I wouldn’t mind being asked a few times but it’s frustrating to be asked so often. Just be prepared to say no thank you.

    3. The soda stations. This is minor but a very slight inconvenience. The Coca Cola Freestyle machines can only be activated using your special Royal cup. Which I didn’t always have on me, nor tended to carry around at all as they were bulky. We only had soda from the machines once in the whole week and would have definitely used it more had it been activated by our seapass card/wristband instead.

  10. I am loving your review!! Glad you guys are having such a great time and still have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the ship!

If you happen to go to Playmakers, can you ask them if food there is included in the Ultimate Dining Package?

    Thank you!!

Thanks so much. I didn’t manage to get your question answered I’m afraid but I believe I have seen in other threads you can eat at venues like Playmakers under the ultimate dining package and a value is applied per person. e.g. $30 - so each person can order up to $30 of any food and any extra would be paid for.

I could be very wrong and it’s definitely worth checking. Sorry I wasn’t able to help more.

  11. I am a little confused by the pool in the solarium. I have seen pictures of what looks like a large hot tub with a picture window. Is that the pool or is that the hot tub? Is there an actual solarium pool? I and my wife really enjoy the solarium on different ships and we look forward to spending time at this one! Thanks for your great review!

Solarium pool (pretty small) and two hot tubs. There was always space though.

  12. Loving your review and pics are great. Sailing on RCL for first time in 2020 and it will be on Symphony. Far away but will come fast enough and really excited to finally sail an oasis class ship. Meanwhile I manage the wait by reading great reviews like yours. I have been sailing Celebrity more lately and have one in October, so Symphony will be a new adventure.

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much. Oasis class is a new level of awesome as is the Symphony. It will be a marked difference from Celebrity so good to compare and contrast. Happy travelling!

  13. So you said you're a Paramore fan and I just have to ask if this was a tribute to their album Riot! :)

Loving your review, thank you so much for sharing your pics and experiences! This will help tide me over until our Symphony cruise next April!

Well spotted! I am a huge Paramore fan and of course this was a tribute to one of their best albums. Just 10 months to go, you will love it.
