  1. A quick lunch in France? Non, c'est imposible!

Really one of the truly wonderful things about France is taking 2 hours for lunch. And one of the great things about Aix is that they invented the sidewalk cafe where one can have that lunch while watching the world go by.

  2. Aix, has a bit of history, a beautiful and accessible center city cafe culture and a prototypical Provencale atmosphere. Marseille has some interesting places, but boulliabaise at the old port just isn't the same as a lunch on the Cours Mirabeau. and Notre Dame de la Garde has some great views but not the history of Saint Sauveur.

    Others may disagree.

  3. There are automatic machines by the trains that adivise you to "Compostez votre billet ici" well, the compostez is right :-) It time stamps your otherwise good anytime ticket. Like buses and the metro ticket checks by a conductor are infrequent but the on the spot fines are hefty if you fail to compose

  4. Cannes Nice is a short commuter type run, you get your ticket at the station normally from a vending type machine though counter service should be available. I have not tendered to Nice so I am not sure about the layout. the train station in Nice is several blocks back from the Promenade des Anglais and a short walk from the old section of town. easy walking though.

  5. (many decent credit cards such as AMEX will cover CDW)

While this has been true in the past I have noted that even many AMEX cards do not cover CDW anymore outside the US. My Delta AMEX Platinum gets me free bags and companion ticket but no CDW :-(

I would advise anyone to check their card in advance. Real Platinum AMEX may still offer protection but it is about the only one if it does.

  6. I agree with Hank (sometimes that happens! and when it does . . .) Arles is interesting but you might actually find Pont du Gard to be incredible and if you have the time a quick stop in Avignon, but that may be too much so if you are a Van Gogh person you might want to include St Remy along the route.

One fly in the ointment. I recall a thread which complained of the difficulty of getting a rental car at Le Havre quayside fullstop, let alone at daft o'clock in the morning. Hopefully HeinBloed will latch onto this thread - or perhaps you can alert her. She knows her stuff with continental trains & carhire.

The biggest trouble with LeHavre and car hires is that if you are in on a Sunday, you are out of luck. My stop this summer, you guessed it, Sunday.

I know of nowhere else in France with no rental agencies open on Sunday. C'est dommage!

  8. Well I would have suggested Fontaine du Vaucluse but November isn't the right time. the Luberon would be nice but again weather and long drive.

The drive to Cassis that goes out of Marseilles and around the hill at the Southeast corner of the harbor is quite nice and you can always drop by Aubagne and sign up for the Foreign Legion.
