  1. We are booked at Maya Chan next month. I'm very excited but a little nervous since it is not a ship sponsored excursion. Has anyone heard of any issues about getting back to the ship on time from Maya Chan?

Hi we are also booked for the MCBR on Friday April 20th

...when you get your email of Instructions from MCBR it will say:

“Shortly after lunch, an English speaking staff member will ask what time you would like to return to the ship. You will have your choice of times. Once we have your request, there is no need to worry further as we will keep track of the time and let you know a half hour before your ride arrives. Remember, this is Mexico, and timeliness might be challenging. Be patient. You will not be late for your ship. If it gets close, we drive you ourselves.”

We’ve heard great things about this resort. We were also hesitant at first until webdid some research. Found some people going the same time as us.

  2. We are sailing to Cuba March 2019 with an overnight in Havana as well. I started the following thread which might provide you some information:

    https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2610475

More directly to your question, though, I have come up with the following tentative plan of local spots for us to visit after dinner. We may/may not hit all of them, but this gets us started (literally and figuratively) in the right direction. The "itinerary" creates a loop that starts/ends at the ship. Approx 2 miles total loop.

    Here is the loop:

    La Lluvia de Oro

El Floridita (may skip due to crowds, too touristy)

    El Patchanka

    Art Pub

La Reliquia (free salsa dancing lessons)

    La Vitrola

This route makes a complete loop back to the cruise terminal. All in all it's approx. 3 km so approx. 2 miles total.

The first bar La Lluvia is located on Calle Opispo. I've been told this street is the Havana version of Bourbon St in New Orleans. If that is the case we may end up making a few more stops and letting the night take us where it takes us. This at least gives us a starting game plan and we can enjoy from there!

If you input all these in to google maps in advance of your trip you'll be able to see how it maps out. That may be helpful.

Thank you! Sounds like a great idea. Thanks for posting

  3. We’re on the same cruise in April. We are on the people to people “American Classic Cars” tour pretty much all day. Going to play it by ear on what to do at night. Depending on how we feel.

It would be great to find something close by like good local music near the ships terminal in walking distance.

  4. While it is true that ships making port calls generally dock at the Old San Juan cruise terminal as opposed to the Pan American cruise terminal, the information you've been given is slightly incomplete. There is actually more than one pier at the Old San Juan cruise terminal itself and two or three ships can be docked in Old San Juan at the same time. So when your friend comes to meet you if there's more than one ship in port that day they'll have to visually identify your ship and wait for you at the entrance for the particular pier where your ship is docked. The piers are all adjacent to each other.

Thank you. From looking at a map I did see more piers. I think I won’t have a problem meeting up with our friend now.

My next question is where is a good place (restaurant)to have a good lunch. It would be great to find something with a good atmosphere and local Puerto Rico food.

And a place that will take US dollars. Weren’t not wanting to use a credit card.

    Thx

  5. Hi again

    It’s a 1997 911 993

    Iris Blue Metallic.

    Last of the air cooled

Yes my friend in San Juan actually is a Porsche Technician and we’re having lunch with him.

I’ve been to San Juan before, actually stayed at the old El Covento in Old San Juan.

So I remember the area but not so much of the piers/Port areas.

    Thanks

  6. There are two docks that the cruise ships use The Pan American Pier and the Old Town Pier...for your day port stop you will more than likely use the Old Town Pier which is across the street and steps away from Old Town San Juan....very convenient.

Great. That’s what I was hoping. Thank you for confirming that info. Appreciate it.

  7. I would be concerned if I was pregnant. I’m sure her doctor would give good advise.

We’re going to Cozumel, Havana, Costa Maya, and a few Caribbean island then to San Juan. And our doctor made sure we were vaccinated and also prescribed medicine for Malaria from Mosquitoes.

    There is a public warning.
