  1. I thought I'd posted a response to something about car rental in Frederiksted but can't find it.  So, I'll start a new thread.

Car rental Frederiksted:  I will be in port late next March and, having spent two holidays of one week plus each, and having rented a car for part of those stays, I prefer to explore St. Croix with my traveling companion who's my daughter rather than take a ship's excursion.  So...

    1.  Will we need to take a taxi over to the airport to pick up a rental car?  Or...

    2.  Do any of the rental companies bring a car over to the Port?

I'm willing to do either, but it would certainly be nice to have a car waiting when we get off the ship.

Thank you for any information about this.

You will see a lot more if you rent a car.  Book rental cars as soon as you can on St. Croix to get one from the location by the ship's pier.  Otherwise, you will have to take a $30/way taxi to the airport to pick one up.  There is a lot to see and enjoy on the island but buy the rental insurance for theft and vandalism.  When me sister lived there they had their cars broken into several times at various beaches across the island.  They do drive on the left and since you are a Brit you should be able to make the switch easily.  The last time I was there before she moved Frederickstead didn't have a ton to offer and you need a car or tour to see the best spots.

I plan to rent a car next March when in port of Fredericksted. I've spent two holidays on St. Croix, each of which was a week long.  Renting a car will allow me to revisit some areas I'd like to see again. Now...

I'm curious about your comment that I need to book a rental early on if I want to get a car at the port.  Is there a website I can use to do that or simply choose the car rental company I want, and a car will be at the port when we arrive?

It's not usually found as a ship-offered excursion, but there are a few private tour companies that sometimes offer a stop there in combination with a stingray city stop and snorkeling.  Not sure if any still stop there at the moment due to the ongoing renovations at Rum Point.

Your other option would be to rent a car and DIY.

Thanks.  That's what I suspected.  I just remember what a lovely area it is and went a couple of times during the week I stayed not too far down the road from Rum Point.

  4. Are there any ship's excursions that go to Rum Point Beach?  Several years ago I spent a week at a hotel on the north shore of Grand Cayman.  I did go to George Town and Sevel Mile Beach one day, but Rum Point was closer, and I actually liked it much better than Seven Mile Beach. The beach is smaller, is set amidst palm trees, has a pier and also a cafe. However, it's about an hour's drive from George Town, and my research hasn't found any excursions that go there.

I think that CC geography oddity should be addressed - the English Channel ports should not be included in the Mediterranean section - the whole Iberian peninsula is in between the Med and the ports in Brittany & Normandy.

I know that the port is not on the Mediterranean, but French ports are generally covered there.

I also posted my question on the "French" ports category as well for the reason that Cherbourg is French.

  6. Anyone have suggestions for tours out of Cherbourg when in port?  Have been to Normandy Beaches and St. Michel so want something specific to Cherbourg and surrounding area.  Royal Caribbean (will be on Jewel OTS) has some options, but I'm sure there are private companies that might offer something more appealing.  Thanks

    1. Yes. But there's no taxi rank at the castle, so agree a time for the driver to return or jot down the operator's number or the uber app.

    2. Yes, though there are no independent cafes or restaurants or pubs in walking distance.

    3. Medieval tunnels, inside & on top of the keep, the Operation Dynamo tunnels - including the ladies toilet (😵).

    JB 🙂

BTW, it's this corner of the county, not just the castle, that's called Hellfire Corner

BTW If time & taxi fare (+ about 15 minutes waiting time) don't break the bank the Battle of Britain Memorial on the clifftop at Capel Le Ferne is 5 miles from the cruise terminal https://www.battleofbritainmemorial.org/

Thank you for the information.  I do know the area is called Hellfire Corner, but in September 1994 when I went there there was a sign at the entrance to the tunnels that said Hellfire Corner.

Anyway, good information and just what I needed to know.

  8. I was in Dover one afternoon many years ago.  I went into the World War II tunnels which were just beginning to be opened and were then called "Hellfire Corner." The castle was closed so did not get to see it.  Now I'm returning for a day in port and have a few questions.

    1.  Will it be easy to take a taxi or Uber from the port to the castle and return?

    2.  Can we easily visit the castle, have lunch and then see the tunnels in perhaps 4 or 5 hours?

    3.  What area of the castle should we not miss?

    Thanks.

  9. I hit enter too soon to ask about Malaga tours.  Specifically, has anyone done a tour from Malaga to Gibraltar and return?  I won't be in port of Malaga until the fall of 2023 so can't look  at ship tours yet.  I'll be on a TA from Barcelona to Tampa on the Brilliance.  We'll pass Gibraltar at night which will be the second time I've done that.  I'd really like to visit Gibraltar and have notice private 6 hour tours from Malaga but just wonder if any experienced cruisers have gone on one of them.

    No beach?
Consider a tour to Shirley Heights, then Nelsons Dockyard, followed by a lunch, cocktails and relaxing lounger at Sheer Rocks, before taxi back to ship.

I stayed a few nights on Antigua a few years ago and did a tour that went to Shirley Heights and Nelson's Dockyard but otherwise just drove around the island.  I like the sound of the tour you suggest.  Do you know which company books it?

  11. I'm on the May 2nd Anthem of the Seas transatlantic from Cape Liberty, NJ to Southampton.  A ll of Royal Caribbean's shore excursions out of Cherbourg and Le Havre are sold out - well, the ones to the Normandy beaches.  I'm looking for recommendations of other reputable tour companies that do those tours in either port.  I will ask this question on our Roll Call forum but thought I'd ask here as well.  I'll add that I'm cruising solo.

  12. A friend and I will be on the Allure OTS in about 4 weeks with first stop being Nassau.  So far only ship excursions are water related which doesn't fit us.  We are both "women of a certain age" so are looking for easy to moderate level private excursions when in port.  My friend is hesitant about taking a private tour so would also like to know reliability of tour company recommended.

    Thanks!

  13. I need information for best way to get from the port into Phillipsburg. I seem to remember from other times in port  that there is a water taxi from the port to downtown Phillipsburg. There may be other options as well. I'm not interested in touring the island this time but have never spent time in Phillipsburg and would like to go there for a few hours there on my upcoming cruise.

  14. Some friends and I will be in St. Kitts later this year.  I've been there three times and done several excursions.  I personally would like to find transportation to Caribelle Batik and then go back to the port for some browsing.  The other three will want a tour of some sort but prefer one that is not sponsored by Royal Caribbean.  They would not want anything that included a lot of walking.  Any ideas for a private tour that would meet their needs?

  15. Three friends and I (all women of "a certain age") will be on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas later this year.  We will have a day in the Dominican Republic and need ideas about excursions other than the ones the ship will offer.  Can someone tell me about Amber Cove and possible excursions we might take there?

  16. I will be on the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas next February.  Four of us (all women of a "certain" age) are looking for private excursions when we are in port next winter. While we are older we are basically healthy and enjoy new adventures. I would appreciate ideas, reviews or anything else good to know about our stop.

  17. I'm sure there are posts about this somewhere, but I couldn't find them, so I'll start a new thread.  I will be in the Dominican Republic next January on the Allure of the Seas and would prefer to take a private tour rather than a ship's tour.  I know that's almost a year away, but I like to research early.  I've never been there and will do research elsewhere, but I've always found CC people to be very helpful.

I will be with a friend who has a few walking problems.  She and I cruised together a couple of years ago and took ship's tours in deference to her needs.  But, this time I want to offer some options since we aren't sailing for a year.  So, I'd like ideas for private tours and/or tour operators with no preference yet what to see.

    Thank you.

  18. I'm sure there are posts about this somewhere, but I couldn't find them, so I'll start a new thread.  I will be in port of St. Thomas next January on the Allure of the Seas and would prefer to take a private tour rather than a ship's tour.  I know that's almost a year away, but I like to research early.  I've been there a couple of times but don't remember taking a tour.

I will be with a friend who has a few walking problems.  We would prefer something that would a) allow us to see the island, b) allow us to tour Charlotte Amalie or perhaps c) go out on the water.  She and I cruised together a couple of years ago and took ship tours, but having been on several cruises I found the local guides are so much better and often less expensive.

Anyway, recommendations for specific tours or tour operators?
