I am unsure. All I know is that when I requested a quote, I was quoted $125 for one day rental. I am working on biting my tongue as I grow older, so I refrained from emailing back my true thoughts on what a scam that appeared to be. But I can say, I was thoroughly impressed with Smart Wheels and thought @ $75 was a very fair excursion amount to explore the island on our own for the day. We absolutely loved the freedom!

I emailed them a bit ago and got the same offer, $125. Since we'll be on Aruba and Bonaire as well, I've checked prices for renting a car for the day there too... ~$75 - $100. I expect the higher prices are due to the fact that they are only a one day rental vs several days. Oh well.

I heard that Advance was great, but I wanted to share this. I was not happy with the fact that their website showed cars for $45 or $55 a day, but then the quote came back as

$125. Seems like bait and switch to me. Bummer cause I’ve heard great reviews.

Personally, I chose Smart wheels Curaçao. They are inside the cruise terminal and we got an Economy automatic for $80 out the door, which includes full insurance, theft protection, and roadside assistance.

I will be sure to leave a review after we rent in December.

    take care!

So, are they somehow charging as a two day rental with whatever taxes, etc? We'll be there, as well as Aruba and Bonaire in September, so trying now to just get things reserved.

    Thanks!!

  3. We will also be doing that same trip - driving from the DW area of Orlando on a Friday morning in early December, down to MIA to return rental car and then taxi or uber to our hotel in Downtown Miami - cruise leaves the next day. Have never made that trip before, we are planning on leaving late morning, heading to Miami...not in any hurry, but living in the Portland OR area and knowing what Friday afternoon traffic is like HERE, I'm pretty sure it's probably as bad there. What can we expect as we get closer to Miami mid to late afternoon? Or, would it be better to leave for Miami later in the day, getting down there after 7 pm...would that lead to us encountering less traffic as we move into the Miami area?

  4. Good afternoon.....

Question for those that have purchased the endless bubbles, or not.....how is the taste of the soda? We were on an RC cruise a couple of years ago and purchased their version of the endless bubbles and the cola tasted like it was very watered down and had a hint of root beer taste to it. As a result we used it very little and I'd hate to purchase on this cruise later this year and again not really use it.

I'm assuming it's fountain filled (vs from a can or bottle)?.

    Thanks gang!!

  5. Thanks for this review - good job! Totally jealous of your suite!!! Funny thing, I was sick early early morning prior to arriving in Cozumel. Felt fine when I went to bed, woke up about 3 am and threw up. But, after that was fine - not sure if it was the rocking of the boat or what. Interesting that others weren't feeling well either.

It was great to meet you at the Meet/Mingle - and it was a fantastic cruise. I did have the same complaint about the Asian's that you did, which is sad.

Next time we go to Cozumel I think that maybe we'll do what you did - we went to Nachi Cocum, it was "ok", but don't know that I'd go there again.

  6. We were on the same cruise and had a blast - no complaints worth mentioning and lots of great experiences. I am thinking the medial emergency at the port was around 10:30 or so? We had dropped off bags, then parked at Park-N-Cruise, and walked back over to the terminal. When we got there, people were queued up outside the doors. I noticed an ambulance off to the side, but didn't think much about it. Since we were in a suite, we walked to the doors to ask if we needed to get in any special line. Right as we got there the two port authority employees holding the doors closed opened them and told "everyone" to come in. People started mobbing the doorways and we just walked in with them. I guess we ended up breaking in line ahead of all those waiting, but it was not intentional!

I did not notice the water taste issues, though I heard someone else mention it. I did experience the water-shut off in the shower. This was right as we left the dock in Jamaica. Having done the zip lien tour, I really needed shower. Luckily it came back on in about 5 minutes.

I've written a VERY detailed trip report for some friends on a Usenet group, but I'd be glad to post it here. It is LONG though!

Oh come on...share it!!! I'd love to read it!

  7. We just booked an excursion to Stingray City with this company. Our deposits aren't due until October, so I wanted to know if anyone has experience with them while we could still cancel.

Are they helpful? Did you have a great time? Do you recommend them?

    Thanks!

Absolutely recommend them - we went with them last week when we stopped in GC. Very respective of the rays, very informative - just all around awesome excursion.

  8. Not sure if you've already been on your cruise already but we just got back from our Western Caribbean cruise on the Navigator of the Seas. We booked a tour with Jamaica Phil to go to the Blue Hole. From the time that Phil picked us up at the port until the time that he dropped us back off, he was entertaining, funny, informative and very concerned that we would have a great time during our time on his island.

First stop was the Blue Hole, which is a series of waterfalls in which you jump from into pools of water - then get out and go to the next one. It was soooo beautiful there, uncrowded and the "guides" there at the location were very careful to make sure that we didn't slip and fall. Very nice guys.

From there Phil took us to a small private beach that is next to the Riu resort in Ochos Rios. OMG, the water, the beach...I could have been there all day. It was gorgeous. I don't know that I've seen water that blue. We were there about 30 minutes. After that, we went to a little roadside restaurant/bar sitting on a cliff overlooking the ocean/bay with more of that absolutely BLUE water.

Then...back to the pier. The entire day lasted about 5.5-6 hours total - it was a bit of a drive to the Blue Hole - but it was very interesting to see "local" Jamaica vs a "false" resort. It definitely seems to be a poverty ridden island, which is very sad - but then again, you see new homes being built, so maybe things are starting to look up there.

If you're thinking about the Blue Hole, I'd 100% recommend Phil Lafayette with Jamaica Phil Tours. FANTASTIC tour!

  10. We're home from our Oct. 18th sailing out of Galveston and I thought I'd give some quick thoughts. Our embarkation was interupted by a medical emergency where they shut down everything. Once that had passed, the large mob/line filed into the terminal. That took around an hour and we were aboard around noon. The ship is beautiful and seems in good shape, having never sailed her. We had superior balconies on deck seven aft of the hump, and they were clean, the closet arrangement across from the bathroom door created some issues for us, shower water pressure was minimal but temp was good. One evening all water pressure stopped while my wife was taking her shower, and was restored in a few minutes. That same day the desalinization system for drinking water had failed, and they tried to pass off salty nasty water to everyone including the crew. We dined at Chops that night and they poured the awful water to us, which we rejected so they comped us Evian, the coffee was undrinkable that night....we purchased a cup at Starbucks. Food in the dining room was quite good, with our servers Leonardo and Rommel keeping us in laughs and a great experience. Weather at all ports Cozamel, Grand Cayman and Falmouth was wonderful, just missing three days of rain....though our first day at sea was quite rough prompting sea sick bags being deployed. Then we were a bit delayed getting back into Galveston with the hurricane Patricia coming through...it was an adventure driving to Bush Int. for our flight home, but we made it on time. Entertainment on board varied, some nights we didn't find anything we enjoyed, but overall it was a great cruise experience. The thing about the bad drinking water was we would have liked to have honest information coming from the staff, not just talking about it with other guests. Any questions I'll try to help with......

We were on the same cruise as you - the water all thru the cruise had that weird taste as tho the desalinization system wasn't working well....awful water. Sounds like you had a completely different experience than we did in the dining room - our servers were slow, rarely seen and never asked us if we wanted more than water to drink - which just seemed odd to us. We wound up eating in the Windjammer a few nights due to that. Overall I just didn't come across many overly friendly/happy crew members. Our stateroom steward, Bernaudette, was FANTASTIC. She was happy, always laughing, wanting to talk - loved her!

We must have boarded prior to the medical emergency...we were on board by probably 11:30. Once we got past the long back up to get thru security, it was maybe 5-10 minutes before we were on the ship and most of that being the walk. Disembarkation was quick - we self disembarked and absolutely flew thru customs - and then out to the crazy wind and rain.

Ha...I was in the shower as well when the water stopped for awhile...I stood there wondering what to do to get the soap and shampoo off with no water. But, after it came back on, never had another issue with that.

Really, all in all, we had a great time both on and off the ship. Watching the Seahawks vs 49'ers on the big screen outside was awesome!

I'm open to questions as well.. :-)

  11. I gotchya! I admit although I toured their several times before they built Space Center Houston, I have to been since to do it as part of that attraction. I always assumed it was geared for the small fry; but I've been told Adults will enjoy it as well

I suspect that it's kind of geared towards younger visitors, but we'll tackle it anyway - since it'll just be us adults, we'll probably get in and out of there a lot faster ;-)

  12. Hotels near IAH....

We are flying in on a Sat to cruise Navigator of the Seas on Sunday. (I already have Galveston shuttle reserved to get us to port)There are many hotels with airport shuttle and breakfast. It's hard to tell if there are restaurants within walking distance for diner. Some reviews say they were not open. Anyone with recent experience, please give me your opinion.

Also looking for time you got off the ship using self debarkation. I have the shuttle scheduled for 9:30.

We are booked at the Marriott Towneplace Suites which is very near the airport, but I don't believe that it's AT the airport. I think that it has a bar, but not so sure about a restaurant. We're renting a car as we're arriving two days early...but might be hard to navigate to restaurants without..

  13. You can check it in at the building prior to entry for cruise check in.

It is manned by porters/staff. Can't leave your vehicle to do so; have someone with you take it there.

The problems I see is everyone wants to arrive early (to wait) and those disembarking want to leave quickly - too many at one time.

We always wait to go after 1:30 pm - no hassle, no traffic, no lines,

So - typically, if you board a little later - like ~2:00, no check in line? Trying to avoid the line, but our shuttle will be dropping us off at the port at 9:00 - thought we'd drop off our bags and then walk over to the strand and browse for awhile.
