I'll be on spectrum this summer and have had a hard time finding any posts on cruise critic about it, understandably.

For port info, I'd suggest looking at the descriptions of the ports on the "explore this itinerary" section of the Royal Caribbean website (for example, do a search for your cruise as though you were making a new booking, you should then see an "explore this itinerary" button). I found the descriptions under that section to be really robust and full of information that I've never noticed on the website before.

I would also do a search on YouTube for the ship, there's a lot of videos from people who've sailed different itineraries on the ship.

Cruise Critic doesn't have port specific boards for the Asia ports, but there is an all-encompassing "Asia" board. It's not as helpful as the Caribbean port boards, but it is helpful.

I'm going next week on the same itinerary. I don't have a toddler so can't help much there. I would guess just the general tips of making sure that you book your reservations for activities that your 2 year old might want to do onboard. Adventure ocean is always a great place to leave them if you need some time to yourselves.

In Phuket, we plan to spend our day going to get a massage at one of the better spas on the Eastern side of the Island and hang around there, before going for the weekend night market to grab dinner and then head back to the ship. Its about a one hour car ride from Patong beach to the Eastern side, but there is more to do there, especially if you've visited Patong beach and Phuket before.

How did your cruise go? Any tips?

  2. Thank you so much all for all of your helpful information. I have had responses from both companies and they said it was unlikely to view bears on their advertised Misty Fjords bear viewing tours in September, both recommended alternative trips i.e. Traitors Cove and Anan. Unfortunately both of these are out of our price range, the exchange rate from NZ is horrific at the moment and near doubles the cost of everything.  We have instead booked a land based tour and will be crossing our fingers and toes for bear viewing! We have booked through Aurora Tours as we were impressed by the reviews and that we would be touring with a local solo operator.

  3. Does anyone know how to work out which berth you will be at, to then work out which car rental company to use (i.e. which is closest). We are in Juneau 10 September on Golden Princess and wanting to book a car as well.

  4. Hi there

We (3 ppl) are in Ketchikan on 9 Sept on a cruise. We would like to do a Seaplane in Misty Fjords with a landing to see bears.

I can only find two companies doing this:

    - seawindaviation.com

    - alaskaseaplanetours.com

If there are any other options, or anyone who's done this and has any recommendations would greatly appreciate.

My mum is a bit mobility impaired on uneven ground so can't really do any of the bear tours which require nature walking.

    Thank you all.

  5. We are looking at booking a Alaska Cruise - Northbound - in September. There seem to be two good options: 4 September (Coral) or 7 September (Golden), advice on which to choose would be appreciated.

We are mid 30's couple, looking at an inside cabin. I do get travel sick, so the most stable ship would be preferable (if there is a difference between the two).

I see that Golden has recently been upgraded, are there any real benefits from this? Previous posts have mentioned Coral having two good viewing decks (fore and aft viewing decks on Baja and Caribe) but I can't see any posts since the re-furb on Golden to assess whether this influences opinions.

    Thank you

  6. We are on the same cruise - I've done two before but those were food and wine, this is my first comedy. My daughter did the last comedy cruise though and said the shows were at 7 and 9 pm - this cruise though is a "big laugh" comedy cruise so there will probably be more shows? I agree about booking in your dinner at Waterfront - last time we didn't do this and there were massive queues later when we were asked to turn up.

We also went to the pantry early one night (around 5pm) and got a good table and relaxed while we waited for the 5.30 pm opening. The food was all fresh and hot and it was quite a good way to do this. Alternatively going later after the rush is good.

If you like a little dancing, go to the Gatsby dance class - there are usually two on the day of the Gatsby party (Saturday night for this cruise).

Feel free to ask any questions :)

What are the food and wine cruises like competitively? A lot of up selling?

  7. Hi, I was told no alcohol at all ever when embarking but a lady I got talking to the other day is head of security at our port and said 1 bottle of wine is allowed on as a "celebratory" bottle. it is apparently not overly advertised, which I have now done. Yikes! I will be trying this on Friday when I embark.
How did this go? Did you succeed in taking one on board?

  8. We don't do wine tours but simply purchase liquor & wine locally at various ports & carry it back on board with us and just bypass the liquor check in desk. If you hand it to them of course they'll take it but we never do.

If you have it shipped back to the ship then yes, they hold it until you leave the ship.

What is the screening like going back on board? Do they scan bags? Check in them?

  9. We are on the Regal Princess 29 April baltic cruise; we seem to arrive in Copenhagen on last day at 5am - what time do you think we can expect to have todisembark? Our fight isn't until 4:15pm so in no rush. Trying to work out if should go straight to airport (preferable with bags), but will depend on how long we have to fill.

  10. First time cruiser, Regal Princess 29 April. Doing research on different cruise tips etc. One I've seen repeatedly is booking specialty dining first night can sometimes have discounts or complimentary wine. Does Princess do this at all?

Any other tips for a first timer always appreciated :)
