  1. Yay!  You are finally on the cruise!  This is fabulous!  Sorry that we don't have an answer to your question but when we were on Explorer last spring we had no trouble getting Puilly Fuisse and a lovely sancerre (I don't remember the name).  G and I are not chablis drinkers, though I think we tried one at a morning wine tasting.  It did not move us.

Have a fabulous voyage.  Wish we were there.  So glad that you two are getting to do this long-awaited adventure!  🛳️🥂🎵

If you are talking about the November Barcelona to Miami cruise, you'll note that you'll spend a full day "Cruising the Mediterranean Sea" as it's a long way from Barcelona to the Straits of Gibraltar.  There is no way with the information provided by the cruise itinerary to figure out when you'll pass through the Straits.  It appears that you'll be 64 hours from leaving Barcelona and arriving in Arrecife.  The Straits are roughly half way in between, so very approximately 32 hours after departing Barcelona, or 2 AM.  But probably at night in any case.  Sorry.

We've passed though the straights 3 times, once from Cadiz, once from Funchal and once from Malaga.  Each time was at the wee hours, usually about 3am.  Unfortunately the lights that were supposed to illuminate the rock were not on any of these transits.   Unless there is a port call in Gibralter, I don't think there is an opportunity to see the sights.  Sorry too.

  3. It seems to me that the website has gotten slower and slower over the past several years.  I created a notebook (yes, hand written) to document the day, port, time of departure and code for the excursions I book online.  If I don't get a confirmation or the itinerary does not show my bookings, I call Regent and talk to an agent.  Having the booking code makes that call go quickly.  Unfortunately, it usually takes hours to book excursions whether they are booked at one sitting or with multiple logins to book 2 or 3 at a time.  I have mentioned this on multiple surveys both from the website and at post-cruise evaluations.

We were booked on the Grand Voyage March 9-May 8, Tokyo-Vancouver.  Obviously the first half of our cruise is gone.  Not sure if we should keep fingers crossed for the April 6 and April 20 segments or just let it all go to FCC's.  Agree that Japan will try to keep the country safe for the Olympics; currently they are denying tourist access.  It doesn't make sense to me that the ship should sail all the way from Italy to Japan only to end up in Vancouver a month later for the Alaska season (maybe).  Hoping for our July and September bookings to sail.  Missing cruising soooo much.

Oops, the Grand Voyage was Hong Kong to Vancouver.  Still waiting to hear what Regent proposes.

  6. A predetermined Barcelona to Miami cruise was offered via the online search function in early 2018.  It took a while after we booked--in March 2018--to realize that Regent created a btb cruise and there are really 2 segments Barcelona-Lisbon-Miami.  Since the Barcelona to Lisbon segment includes Morocco, I assume these ports may have drawn guests for this portion alone or as a btb from the previous Med segment.

  7. It would be really great to go back to Glacier Bay.  25 yr ago we were on HAL and saw a 23 story calving!  The noise was incredible and magnificent!  I agree that a forward open area is a must for Alaska.  Even though Explorer is our favorite ship, I'm not sure it would be my choice for Alaska.  In 2021, as Mariner is finishing up the World Cruise in the Med, it appears she'll be in for a refurbishment and Explorer, after completing the Grand Voyage from Hong Kong to Vancouver, will cover for her till she gets back to Alaska.  Hope to see the next 2021 schedules soon.

  8. Thank you Kwajgirl for the announcement!  We've sailed with Captain Serena several times.  She is a gem!  She has remembered us from her first captaincy on the Mariner, Lima to Buenos Aires in 2015.  Dinner with her is delightful, she's full of stories of her career and the challenges of advancing in a male dominated industry.  Can't wait to sail with her again!  Looking forward to Splendor in April 2020, Miami to Barcelona with her.

We've also sailed with John Barron several times.  Such an outgoing, open, friendly, funny, inclusive guy.  Can't wait to see him again, too!

Re: schedules--Captain Serena told us that the captains have a 10 weeks on, 4weeks off schedule.  CD's generally work 3 or 4 months on and 2 months off.  John's had the Christmas holidays off for the past several years, mid-December to mid-Feb, not sure if that's the schedule he's negotiated or just luck.  Will ask him the next time we see him.

  9. I received this post on a roll call for a future cruise and thought I might try my hand at starting a thread. Thanks Nanook21 for the inquiry. Any and all comments regarding Southampton ins and outs would be helpful.

Docnduck, I know this is a roll call for your 2019 voyage [Explorer Nov 2019], but I would be interested in hearing about your Copenhagen-Southampton experience, especially docking in Southampton. We’re booked on Explorer Aug 30 2019 (prior to your roll call) for the Stockholm-Southampton leg, and have never been to any of those ports, nor have we ever docked in Southampton. We’ll be flying back to Canada from there, so curious about getting from the dock to LHR airport especially. Don’t want to hijack this roll call, so could you (or did you) post under a separate review thread?

We had a fabulous Copenhagen to Southampton cruise in June-July 2018 on the Seven Seas Explorer. The weather was fantastic!!! so the Norwegian coast was incredibly beautiful. See the roll call for SS Explorer June 26, 2018 Copenhagen to Oslo for a video link from a fellow cruiser.

Needless to say, we stayed on the next segment and finished up in Southampton. I strongly recommend having Regent handle the airfare and transfer to London-Heathrow airport. The port itself is clean and well organized and the dock agents are very nice. We disembarked on a Monday morning. In July Southampton is your typical small, crowded beach town. Traffic was abysmal and it took nearly an hour to get on the motorway after leaving the ship at about 7:45am. Total travel time to LHR was about 2 1/2 hr. Not sure how much a taxi would have cost but probably a lot. I suspect the summer vacation crowd had a lot to do with the congestion as we have embarked from London/Southampton twice before with minimal traffic issues. (Also the busses from London hotels leave after 9:30am and travel against the rush hour traffic.)

  10. I think the Mariner goes into dry dock in Europe in May of 2021 which is why the trip ends in Barcelona.

    Peggy

Just got the brochure in the mail today. I agree that it appears not too exciting for a world cruise. Also it's significantly shorter than the past three or four (in view of no Atlantic crossing).

If Mariner goes into dry dock in May 2021, which ship will do the early Alaska season?
