  1. Hi there,  Just wondering if anyone has done this cruise at the end of April before on the Wind Surf and their experience with destinations, weather this time of year, etc.  We are looking at the 7 night cruise on April 26.  We cruised 11 days on the Surf on the Italy/Dalmation Coast itinerary in early May in 2018 and it was absolutely fantastic in every way.   Thank you.

  2. We’ve done cruises where we have had a balcony and have just returned from a Seabourn Cruise that had the suite rooms, the suites are great, but honestly when we sailed on the Windstar Surf (Italy/Croatia) didn’t miss the balcony one bit....can’t wait to get back on this yacht, it was fantastic!

The answer to your "what time should I arrive at the airport" is complicated and, I think, depends on what airline you're on.  If you're flying out on AA, you could get to the airport at 10am but AA won't start working a 5:30pm flight until much later.  See our experience below.

Forgive me in advance for my snarky tone but our experience was this: - Our SB tour bus dropped us off at SXM at 12:30pm which should have been plenty of time to catch our 4:10pm flight at a normal airport on a normal day.  But this was SXM on a SATURDAY.  Over 20 major airline departures (maybe 50 minor commuter airlines departures) 1000's of passenger and 1 metal detector and 1 runway. (MY flight stats come from https://www.flightstats.com/v2/flight-tracker/departures/SXM)

American Airlines wouldn't "start" checking in the Miami  4:10pm passengers until 1:30 as they were trying to get the 3 earlier flights out.  Miami passengers who made it to the ticket counter before 1pm were turned away and sent to the back of the check in line. We got in the AA check in line at 1pm, got to the AA counter at 2pm, got in the security line at 2:05pm and got to the gate at 5:30pm (for our 4:10pm flight).  Happily our Miami 4:10pm flight was delayed 2 hours  and didn't take off until approx. 6:30pm.  I'm 100% sure this AA - Miami flight would have taken off empty at 4:10pm.

I do offer one solution that may help.  Check in on line the day before, print your boarding passes on board the ship (note SXM does not accept mobile device boarding passes) and throw your checked bags in the ocean.  Doing these 3 things will allow you to get in the airport security line as soon as you get to the airport.

We are on Air Canada and this is their only flight out of there so hopefully it won’t be so bad.  Thanks for all the info.  I’m thinking we do a 2-3 hour tour in the morning and then go to the airport.  It will be a long day!

    Hi Raphael,

Our cruise out of Barbados is Saturday 26th of January departing at 23.00

    kind regards,

    Pauline

Hi Pauline, We are on this same cruise on the 26th that departs Barbados at 11pm, do you know how early we can board the ship?  I thought we’d see that somewhere in the itinerary but I don’t.  Thank you!

  5. Thanks for the info on the airport...we leave SXM on the Saturday (Feb 2) that our cruise finishes. We arrive in port at 7am and our flight departs at 5:30 so we had thought we might do a short tour but now I’m wondering if we would have time.  One tour company said they would have us to the airport by 2:30...your thoughts on if that is enough time in advance?

  6. Thank you for the information!  Just torn right now between choosing a vacation that has an itinerary or 2 weeks at a resort where there isn't much for a schedule and an opportunity to recharge.  We have to decide soon as the cruise we are looking at departs Barbados on Jan. 26th.

  7. Hi,  We haven't cruised much, once on Princess, Uniworld, and Windstar but have found that we like the smaller cruise ships.  We are looking at a Caribbean cruise on the Odyssey at the end of January and would like some feedback on others' experience on Seabourn.  We are in our mid 50's and really enjoyed our experience on Windstar as far as the customer service, ports, comfort of the ship, well-versed guides and the food/drink was outstanding.  Also wondering are the tours included?   Thank you!

  8. Hello,

I think you are on the same cruise as my husband and I. This is our 4th WS cruise. Breakfast and lunch are as casual as you like. Shorts, capris, tees etc. Dinner is a little dressier but definitely not formal. Nice slacks or capris are fine, some women do skirts or dresses. No shorts or tees. Men do not need jackets but dockers or slacks (no jeans) and a collard shirt are fine.

Hope that helps. Look forward to meeting everyone! ~ Teresa

Thank you...just wrapping up packing-we head out tomorrow. Hope to see you on board! Jackie

  9. Hi JW,

Are you doing any pre- or post- trip tours? What about tours during the cruise? I'm always looking for ideas!

We're going to take the train up to Pompeii and spend some time up there. We also booked a private tour for Mt. Etna.

Sorry for the late response....We've booked a few tours with WS but still looking at some others...one that we did book was the Positano tour but we would like to get to Pompeii and Ravello also so may look at cancelling and finding something that might include all 3. 3 weeks until we sail, hard to believe!

  10. We were on this cruise last year. It is a great cruise. We only booked two excursions with Windstar. In Rovinj, we did the experience Istria tour. It was a lovely drive to the town of Motovon, and included a truffle experience. We enjoyed it very much. We also did the boat trip to Positano. That is a good choice, because some that took the ferry over had a problem getting back because the return ferry did not arrive when it was supposed to. They had to talk their way on the boat we were returning on.

We had booked a private river rafting tour in Split, but we had miscommunication about the time of departure so we missed it. We just walked around the town.

In Dubrovnik, we walked the wall. The town was very crowded, but it was enjoyable.

We booked a private excursion in Sicily also to Mount Etna and a winery for a tasting and a typical Sicilian lunch. We were not able to go to Taormina because of a G7 conference.

    Enjoy your trip.

Great thank you so much for the information!

  11. Hello JW,

Are you on the May 25th sailing? We are too! It’ll be our first WS cruise as well. We’ve booked a couple of private tours, none with the WS company. We tend to “wing it” in many of the cities.

Look forward to meeting you! We have a roll call set up as well with a few others already on the board.

Yes we are on the May 25th sailing...looking forward to it!

  12. Hi there...this will be our 1st Windstar cruise, we are cruising on the Windsurf this May and have only done a Princess Cruise and Uniworld River cruise so pretty new to cruising. Any excursion suggestions from any of you that have done this itinerary in the past. So far we are looking at the Sorrento boat trip to Positano. Do the excursions sell out? Or can you wait until you are onboard to book them?

    Thank you.
