Sighteer Sam - please keep us posted on the trip your friends are currently taking. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. As my original post stated, we are booked on Viking Delling on August 15 from Avignon to Paris. We had thought a cruise was currently going on but the Viking reps have been telling us that the first France river cruise is August 1. 

My wife and I also took the Viking Grand European in August of 2017. And yes, we enjoyed going into the towns during free time.

I believe that Vikings's first river cruise in France will be ending in the next couple of days. It will be interesting to find out if there were any issues during the cruise. We have put together an extensive list of questions for our travel agent to explore this week. I am also trying to determine if other cruise lines operating in France have the same restrictions.

We will be taking the Viking Frances Finest cruise on 8/15 from Avignon to Paris. In checking with Viking, it has been learned that they are still restricting your leaving the boat ONLY on one of their tours. While we have already signed up for several optional tours, there are 7 days where we are only off the boat for a short period of time (anywhere from 90 minutes to 4 hours). The remaining time you are confined to staying on board. Normally, on our other Viking River cruise, we would leave the ship on our own for further experiences.

We are hoping that this restriction will be relaxed prior to our cruise date. Does anyone else share my hesitancy for having to remain on board for protracted periods of time?
