  1. We have always found the patches to be very effective....

    :eek::eek: HOWEVER :eek::eek:

They are currently on backorder from suppliers......actual terminology: "LONG TERM BACKORDER".

To Those With Cruises Booked: If you rely on those, you might want to begin EARLY to try to get them. Of course, with suppliers "out", that may still be futile...but possibly worth a try....

and certainly have other options for dealing with sea sickness 'in your pocket'....

The name brand patches are available! :) I just got my prescription filled after the run around about backordered. Seems it's the generic ones that are on long term backorder.

  2. I know you guys probably won’t believe me but insurance companies do keep track of what generic medicines are in back order and update their system accordingly. I have worked in pharmacy for 15 years. Most of the time a doctor stating no generics isn’t even needed most of the time. But of course better safe than sorry.

The pharmacy I work at is a specialty pharmacy and right now it does not show any generic Transderm patches available. But hopefully it will be available again soon.

I would have thought it would have been that easy. But the Pharmacy made me get a new prescription stating no generic. Said it was because of my insurance. So just putting it out there my experience.

  3. I asked at Wal-Mart pharmacy today if they had scopolamine patches in stock. I go do doctor next week, prep for Sept 30 cruise. Pharmacist said their supplier no longer provides them, that I should try Walgreens. I had read of this issue on CC in the past.

I had this issue at my pharmacy. The generic patches are not available and had been on back order for months. The name brand patches are available. The doctor issuing the prescription just has to say no generics. And my insurance did pay.

  4. I had the same issue on a regular booking. I had to go into detail about the rate code that the room on a higher deck at the same price came up under. Carnival kept telling me I would lose the $25 OBC and that it would cost $200 more. Once I finally got them to understand I wasn't worried about the $25 OBC and that the room was showing at the same price, they changed it. In the end it cost me $25 OBC, But I think it will be worth it!

  5. Cruising on the Triumph in October. Our stateroom will have 3 people. I just came to the realization that our stateroom has a trundle bed, not a pullman.

How bad is the trundle bed? Can I take an air mattress or mattress pad?

    Thanks

  6. Thanks. I've been looking at Mock bookings and I have 2 more who are thinking of joining us. The rooms to choose from are very limited. Like 2 on main and 1 on riviera. No OV offered. And price has gone up. Maybe due to Halloween all month on Carnival?

I was not aware about the Muster station, but makes total sense now that I think about it. Call it my duh moment :)

I was thinking in terms of is it harder to get into shows, longer buffet lines, etc.

    Thanks again

  7. I work in Pharmacy so I can tell you at least in the USA for 100% Scopolamine Patches are NOT available and have not been for close to 10 months. Will they come back? At this point I doubt it, I have not seen something on back order for this long in years in retail pharmacy. Not saying someone won't make them, but it isn't a high demand product in truth.

This is ONLY for the generic version! The brand name are available still. I can also attest to this as a recent patient was just prescribed them for a 15 day cruise, and they needed a prior auth with the insurance. Dr's office got the PA for the generic after I specifically let them know only brand was available. 3 day fight but it happened and they got their 5 brand name patches today. I then proceeded to order 3 more boxes of the brand name to replace them.

If the cost doesn't bother you (which I mean... you are going on a cruise right?) When I compared the price of the 5 days of brand name patches for this patient just in case their insurance wouldn't pay for it... it was only $100 ran through a discount card we offer.

This is just to point out that it is only the generic that isn't available and if you are willing to pay a slight premium (5 generic patches is $80) they are still out there! If your normal pharmacy doesn't have them, call pharmacies and find if they use Cardinal as a distributor. If they do, you can get the brand name Transderm patch.

Thank you! This may be why the pharmacist told me to talk to doctor. But they did not explain the part of just the generic version was affected. I have a PPO insurance plan and am dealing with a big box pharmacy, so they are not always customer friendly. If I have to pay out of pocket, so be it. Thanks again.

  8. Well Canada is out, too far a road trip for me!

And yes, I am aware they were available in the beginning of the year. I have a prescription for them from an episode in February with dizziness and nausea.

Not trying to be argumentative, but they are no longer available in the southern region I reside in. The pharmacist point blank told me they were no longer manufacturing them and they had not been able to get them for a couple months. The pharmacist also stated they did not have a substitute for the patch, and to talk to the doctor.

My original question is and still is, what do the seasoned cruisers use for motion sickness that works besides scopolamine patches?

I've read Zophran, Phenegran, or Dramamine. But I understand make you drowsy? Ginger? Then another place said Zophran does not work. See the confusion? I need your actual motion sickness remedies that work that you have used.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. I believe the original manufacturer stopped making them a couple years ago, due to their patent running out. There are now generic versions available.

I will be asking the doctor at my next visit in a week. The pharmacist is the one who told me they are no longer making and had nothing that could be substituted. She said they had been trying to find patches for another special needs patient for a couple months now, but with no avail. Maybe it is just the one brand? I can always hope the pharmacist misunderstood what I was asking.

I have seen that there are some prescription pills, but no patch. Will search the threads here also.

    Thanks

  10. I upgraded to Lido Deck a couple of weeks ago doing that. Same money I had already spent for a better "category" stateroom and a higher deck.

Good for you! I learned from these boards, CALL! All they can tell you is no :)

  11. Schoifmom hello.

I tell you a story....this past February I had spinal cord surgery and anterior cervical disectomy and fusion, I also was on these. boards asking people what they thought and fortunately most told me what better way to recuperate being on the cruise. I had 7 weeks recovery which is little time since the stem cells put in me need to grow into bone and takes up to a year. I also thought about being through all that and dealing with all the pain I deserve to get away so I went and it was the best thing I did even though I had to wear an electrical brace for 4 hours each day.

This week I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and I believe it went into my lymph nodes because for the past three months I been very dizzy, feeling nauseas, night sweats, ringing ear, lump in throat etc.....I just took a PET scan yesterday and took another punch biopsy Wednesday as the first biopsy showed it being very deep and they need to grade the cancer....needless to say, I am booked on the Majesty of the Seas to Cuba which I never thought I get to see in my lifetime....even though I may be diagnosed with terminal cancer, I AM GOING!! (for those who will disagree and say some comments don't bother my mind is set, if I am going to have a fight of cancer I am going to enjoy myself before it as the cruise is in 17 days).....with that being said, when I come back I take care of it and I have six weeks to deal with it to my next cruise on October 14th (if I need more time for treatment I will cancel maybe lol).

What I am trying to say to you, its your ankle/foot yes it be a challenge for you but after what you go through you deserve this cruise! You can rent a scooter or wheelchair and if you don't need it then you use whatever medical device the doctor gives you but I say have a scooter rented so it be alot easier on you should you need it. I have been on cruises where I seen others with foot issues and you won't be the only one, in fact, a few years ago our family had a cruise together and one of us had a broken foot and she rented a wheelchair and a special wheelchair for the beach (it had huge wheels) and she was able to enjoy your cruise.

Go and have a great time, what better way of healing than being on a cruise.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I too am battling cancer. According to doctors, I had a 11% chance of making it a year( I have :D). I have done chemo, and am now taking a break from it due to quality of life. I give you background to say this to you, enjoy the cruise to Cuba. Do what you are able to do while you can and hopefully it will not be as bad as you imagine( the waiting for test results is the hardest). Chemo will make you weak the more you take, I did Disney at the beginning of the year while still doing chemo, and it was extremely hard. So keep that in mind in October, but I think the cruise will be much easier( however sun is not your friend during chemo :( )

Have a great time and keep positive!

  12. This is what I received from an agent from a website that seems to be used by a lot of members here:

Most Comprehensive Plans will offer a waiver of pre-existing conditions if you meet the following conditions: You purchase the policy within 10 - 21 days of making your first trip payment; insure ALL prepaid non-refundable expenses prior to your departure date; and be medically fit to travel the day you purchase the policy.

He did state that through Nationwide cruise plans a waiver could be obtained.

  13. Hi Somedayhas arrived, and welcome to CruiseCritic.

I've written a reply but NOT yet posted it, and I might not, as I am not an "expert". I have my own theory about how it would work for your situation, at least with our Travel Insured policy (the specific type we get; they have more than one, I think).

I STRONGLY suggest that you CALL Steve at

    www.TripInsuranceStore.com

He owns the company; they are travel insurance brokers, and handle policies from several vetted insurers (each with more than one type of policy, I think).

HE will either know the answer, or call one - or more - of the insurers to clarify if there is a policy for "you". (Your situation is hardly unique these days, thank goodness for modern medicine!)

IF he finds a policy that works for you, please have him highlight the EXACT SECTION that pertains to your situation being "covered".

With insurance, one does NOT want to be needing to say, "...but someone told me..."

It would be nice if you report back, given that others *are* in similar situations.

Our "CC email address" is right below this, in our signature section, if you want to write to us directly for more help.

But the bottom line is that we would only be giving our opinion or some advice, and you cannot rely upon us for any guarantees, obviously.

However, we DO try to help.

    Why?

Because WE learned of travel insurance *here*.

And on our FIRST (and very expensive - for us at that time!) cruise/land trip, we therefore took out travel insurance. And... less than 2 weeks from when we were to depart, DH had a medical emergency, and the *only* traveling we did for the next couple of months was back and forth for medical care, tests, etc.!

And yes, Travel Insured refunded everything we had prepaid, all of which was, at that late date, totally NON-refundable.

And we've since had some other claims, ALL paid with no nonsense by Travel Insured. And getting claims paid with "no nonsense" IS a huge part of travel insurance!

We owe a huge debt (we know the exact dollar amount ;)) to CC for the encouragement about buying travel insurance!

Somedayhas arrived: Please make sure you understand the difference between "purchasing before final payment" and "purchasing within the 10-20 day window after FIRST payment/deposit", depending upon WHICH policy you have.

    GC

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely going to call and see what I can find out.
