If a bus loaded with cruise passengers leaves Basel at the same time a full river cruise ship leaves Amsterdam, where and when will they meet and will anyone be in the right city to make their flight home?

To all - We were fortunate to complete our Basel to Amsterdam cruise on the Viking Alruna without incident. We began in Basel on September 15 and ended in Amsterdam on September 22. I think the crew probably had some careful steering through the gorge. On both of our two extra days in Amsterdam, it rained but at the wrong end of the Rhine.

Tomorrow the Viking Alruna will dock in the New Harbor rather than on the Rhine due to the low river level.

Heading north on the Viking Alruna. Left Rudesheim this morning and sailed through the middle Rhine with no problems. Passed many Viking ships going south, including the Viking Tialfi so despite the low water levels, all is well!

Thanks Travel for the update. Certainly could impact us on the Viking Alruna. Left Strasbourg last night and arrived at Mannheim early this morning. The ship will stop in Bernstein to pick up those on the morning Heidelberg tour. Next is Rudesheim this evening but they don't list a departure time for Koblenz. Fingers crossed.

We are in Breisach on day of our Rhine cruise on the Viking Aruna since there was a ship swap. Off to Strasbourg tomorrow. Will keep you posted.

In Cologne, we will take the Viking morning city tour then meet relatives we have never met! We will spend the rest of the day with them.

The data from notamermaid sounds like the old math word problem that began "Two trains leave from the same station, going in opposite directions...." Based on weather data from weather.com, the forecast for the cities along the Rhine for Basel - Amsterdam 9/15-9/22 looks very nice. That's also the bad news since no almost no rain is forecast.

I don't think they would deliberately do a switch unless they had to. Too much inconvenience for all involved. I'm sure the Alruna is great!

We are scheduled on the Basel to Amsterdam Rhine cruise on the Viking Tialfi starting on 15 September. Just received notification from Viking that, due to the water level issues, there was a ship swap. We will now embark from Basel on the Viking Alruna. Viking does not anticipate any additional itinerary adjustments.

I am guessing that the Viking Tialfi will embark from Amsterdam on that day. If another ship swap needs to take place, we could end up on the Tailfi after all.
