We would like to take a Spring cruise.  What month(s) are most likely to have acceptable water levels for cruising on the Danube?

    JerryInIL-

April 2019 is the best month - HAHA.

Seriously...if you have some flexibility and can book a trip in the relative near term (after watching the river levels etc)  that might be your best bet.  Last Fall, our Gate 1 cruise was impacted by very low water.  We moved our trip to be on the Danube the week of 4/21.   In the Spring there is a greater chance of too high water.  Even in the Spring I guess a spell of very heavy rains could cause even short term planning to go awry.  Sort of a crap shoot to a certain extent.

You get on as we get off. We have 2 nights in Budapest at the end of our cruise.

Hopefully we'll all have a great time.

Trig2018-  We board in Regenesburg on 4/21 and disembark on 4/28.  What day do you disembark in Budapest?

Its fairly close between Regensburg and Budapest, about 645 km.  If I could ride my bike 24 / 7, at an easy 15 kph pace it would take less than 2 days.  6.5 hours in a car.  We did a Rhine River Cruise a couple of years ago and I remember during parts of that trip the easy going locals on their bikes were going faster than we were!

Have a great time and get the crew broken in good for us!

  3. Here is a link to the Pfelling Gage.  This is a relatively shallow (during droughts) part of the Danube. For now, this looks good.  Last fall many river cruise ships were not able to get between Regensburg and Passau.

We were allowed by Gate 1 to move our planned Oct 2018 river cruise to April 2019.

  4. One other thing. Just go with the flow. I am reading now that ships can’t get into Budapest. We had no problems last week. The cruise companies look at these water levels day to day. Like the passengers they would like to avoid the inconvenience as well. Evidently the critical area of the river for us was from Passau to Regensburg. They day we ship swapped the water level was such that we could have made it but then the next day it dropped below again.

Now I'm getting nervous...our ship due to sail from Budapest toward Vienna starting 10/20 with Gate 1, the Monarch Baroness. Right now the Monarch Baroness is on the Resgensburg side of the sallow area near Pfilling and is heading further to the East.

    See:

    https://pegelonline.wsv.de/webservices/zeitreihe/visualisierung?ansicht=einzeln&pegelnummer=10078000,

AND there is very little rain in the forecast over the next two weeks. Has anyone had ship "swaps" using Gate 1? For a few weeks, I've followed the Monarch Baroness and as long it was "stuck" on the Budapest side I was feeling OK the that worst case we might need to ride a bus from Budapest to Bratslava (if the levels were low on that portion of the Danube). NOW I'm not sure if ANY Gate 1 ship even will be in the area when we arrive in Budapest in two weeks.

  5. We are on Tauck's MS Savor, currently tied up in Passau. We were supposed to go to Nuremberg but will not sail beyond here, being bussed to Nuremberg on Friday morning. Today's tours went by bus to Straubing, and while we did not go, a member of our group who did said there was very little water in the Danube much past Passau. At the moment, the Avalon Impression is rafted to us, the Viking Freya is behind us and we passed a tour group in town from the Viking Jarl, but I have no idea where it is docked. Based on what we can see, and what our friends have seen, do not plan on cruising anywhere between Passau and Nuremberg unless we get about ten inches of rain this weekend, and the last forecast we saw is for no rain at all!

Further on the Danube extra low water level west of of Passau - A week or so back notamemaid posted a link to this gage / water level site at Pfelling :

On this chart RNW = Regulatory Low Water...>Does Any One Know< is this about the cut off for most shipping / cruise ships??

  6. Hi all, I want to thank you for all the updates you have been posting here. We leave next weekend to board the Gate 1 Monarch Baroness in Budapest to Vilshofen. It looks like it is raining in every city we are stopping in on and off all week before we get there. We are hoping to get lucky and enjoy the entire cruise along the river. Anyone seen the Baroness the last week out there?

I've been tracking Monarch Baroness recently since we are traveling on it in mid Oct, in the same direction as you are. It was in Bratislava for a few days and then was tracking to the West. Last report had it going from Linz to Passau. For some reason it has not updated since 8/31. I was tracking it via this site: www.marinetraffic.com
