Hello!  We are cruising out of Venice in a few weeks and had a few questions.  First of all, I know this is a general question, but about how long would it take to get from St. Marks Square to the cruise ship terminal?  Our plan is to drop off our bags around 10-11, then if it is easy head back into Venice, explore for a bit more, then head to the ship around 2-3.  If this seems like more of a hassle, we will just head to the ship.  Thanks for all your expertise!

Hi Tides (I just had to say that)--

I can't answer the question about the travel time, but thought I'd mention another option you'd have.  In my research I found a service called "BagBNB" which provides temporary storage of your bags, in several locations in Venice (and many other cities as well).  Hotels basically sign up to securely hold your bags for the number of hours you specify.  I think the current rate is 5 euro a day per bag, regardless of time.  Depending on how many bags you need to leave, maybe it'd be worth the expense (and time savings) to just go straight into Venice with your bags, drop them off at the BagBNB location of your choice, and then recover them around 2-3 to head to the ship.  They are at bagbnb dot com.

And if your cruise happens to be on Oceania Riviera's Promenades and Palaces cruise departing from Venice in a couple of weeks--welcome aboard!

  2. What menu are you talking about? Only La Reserve and Privee have a cost attached.

In any case, the amounts are in U.S. Dollars.

The posts immediate prior to yours seem to have been talking about tours -- and yes, usually those are in euros. (Or the local currency, whatever it is. In some countries, such as when we did the Black Sea cruise a while back, the guides preferred U.S. dollars ... cash.)

Thanks Mura; I should have been more explicit. I was referring to some of the menus depicted in the photographs in this thread, for example, the Waves bar menu here:

...but I'm clear now that the on-board pricing appears in USD, whereas everything off-ship is (obviously) almost certainly going to be in euros or whatever the local currency is.

Thanks all for the input! I feel 14% better! :p

  3. Dumb question of the day award, but if I don't ask I'd be wrong, having never cruised the Med: The values expressed on the menus, are in euros, correct? (I'm trying to absorb the sticker shock, but I will feel 14% better if someone tells me they're in USD for some reason, rather than euros.)
