  1. Buying online tickets may not give you an actual ticket, only a voucher which must be exchanged for a ticket at the city wall entrance.  Not sure if this is also applicable for the cable car, but do believe it is the same.  Your arrival is in June, it should be too busy, but standing in a short line should not be a problem.

  2. Yes, please take a taxi from the harbor to Pile gate.  You can buy your tickets there and once you begin the walk, you will be able to finish.  Do keep in mind that sunset is early, depending on your exact date, so check sunset times for Dubrovnik also.  Weather can be good or wet, windy and cold.  Be prepared and make sure you have good walking shoes with radial tires on the soles.  Normally at 3pm, there is a young man at the Pile gate entrance who begins to lock the many gates.  So if you beat him up the 87 entrance steps, you will get to walk the wall.  Enjoy

  3. Sorry but as a local resident the rules of cruise critic do not permit me to make any personal recommendations.  You can google car rentals for Dubrovnik Gruz harbor and will find a multitude of rental companies.  Do keep in mind that driving and parking in our area can be daunting.  I do strongly suggest renting a car only when you want to visit the outlying areas.

  4. My best suggestion is to utilize our local tourist website.  Good information on our historical and cultural sites, you can choose accordingly to your interests.  Walking the wall is always a must, it can take up to 2 hours and getting up there as early as possible.  The photo opps and views are spectacular just make sure you have good walking shoes and be prepared for 1,000 steps spread throughout.  Exploring the old part of town, in my own personal opinion, not worth doing without a local guide.  Many guests believe they have 'done' Dubrovnik and have no clue to our history.  Lunch at your choice, hint many of our homemade local eating places are those with no views!  Banja beach is a 5 minute stroll from the Ploce gate, a nice stop to end a perfect day.  Since I am a local resident, cruise critic rules do not permit me to recommend any specific restaurants or tours.  Use our website - http://www.tzdubrovnik.hr/lang/en/

  5. Sorry Grandma, I totally disagree!  By using a local guide, one can learn our history which dates back to Roman times.  There is are more to see than just walking the wall.  Utilize our tourist bureau website and decide which of our many sites interest you and enjoy.  Please do not miss the Rupe Museum, it is my favorite.  Enjoy my beloved Dubrovnik, I have been doing so now for the past 11 years.

  6. Of course the town permits mobility scooters inside the walls.  I did not see that part of the post, must look into getting new glasses soon.  However I would not waste the time and effort it will take to use the scooter from Gruz to the old part of town.  Entrance can be done easily at Pile gate, there is a very good ramp which will permit entry with ease.  Please use a shuttle service or taxi to town, our roads and sidewalks are not scooter friendly.  The Stradun, our main promenade, is relatively flat with a few minor indents but you will be able to enjoy many of our sites with ease.

  7. Entrance into the old part of town is free.  The city wall encompasses the old town, and yes there is a fee for the wall and it is 200 Kuna per person.  There are three entrances to old town, Pile (pee-leh) is probably where your shuttle will drop passengers.  The main entrance to the wall is several meters inside and you can decide once you are there.  The cable car is still not working, there is no definite date for reopening but we are hoping for June and yes there is a fee for the cable car.  Perhaps a taxi tour would suit you best, check with the driver how much and make sure he includes the drive up Mt Srd for the view.

We will be in Dubrovnik in late October and have a few questions.  We would like to walk the walls in the morning. Can we buy tickets on-line before the cruise, or is it better to buy them the day of?   Where would you buy the tickets?   Do you need cash for the tickets, or will they accept a credit card?   Once you have your ticket and are walking the walls, can you go down into the town and then go back up onto the walls later?

You are arriving in Dubrovnik late is the season, past the massive crowds in the old town.  You can walk the walls in the morning, no problem.  I suggest you buy your tickets upon arrival, the ticket office is adjacent to the Spas entrance.  They accept credit, debit cards and cash.  Once you begin your wall walk, you can go down once for a very limited amount of time, last I heard it was only an hour or less.  Enjoy your time, the views are spectacular.

If I'm doing a tour that goes from 11:50 - 3:50, would I also have time to do the cable car (for photos and a drink at the restaurant) if the ship leaves at 7pm?

First make sure your tour does not include the cable car or a drive up Mt. Srd.  Ask to get off the tour closes to Ploce (plo-cha) gate.  You can walk upward to the cable car ticket booth and enjoy our views and a glass of good Dalmatian wine.  Enjoy!

Did you walk from the pier to the walls? We are an active family also and I would like to walk from the walls back to the pier instead of waiting in a taxi line. We would rather be in charge of walking back to the ship instead of getting stuck in a line. We will be in Dubrovnik in June and we know crowds will be in full force.

    Thanks! Jen

Walking from the old town to the pier is all downhill, an easy stroll but not interesting.  I would rather spend that time exploring the old town and enjoy the wall, the cable car and our historical and cultural sites.  Take the time to find "Rupe Museum", it is one of our hidden treasures you should not miss.  You can always take the bus from Pile gate back down to the Gruz harbor, no need to wait in the taxi line.  Enjoy our old town.

Cavtatlady, is there a difference in Srd & Srdj? I know the cable car goes to Srd but have seen tours that go to Srdj.

Also looking at a tour that goes to Cavtat, Srdj and old town tour (late April). I know you are probably biased 🙂 but why would I want to see Cavtat?

There is no difference, Srdj is shown to help tourists understand the correct pronunciation (surge).  Take the tour, you will learn about some of our long history and enjoy the views from the top of Mt. Srd.  Cavtat is a special small town, which is lovely and April we will not be overly crowded.  Take the tour, experience our area while learning.  Enjoy!

We are in Dubrovnik from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm. Can you tell me how to get to the walls. Also would you do a tour of the city or would you walk around the walls by yourself. If you were me what would you do with being here for a long time. What restaurants would you eat at. Thanks in advance for all of your help

Check with your cruise line to see if they have a shuttle from port to the old part of town.  Taxis, buses and shuttle services drop all passengers at Pile (pee-lay) gate entrance.  I always recommend doing a tour for your best experience of visiting our town.  Walking the walls is nothing more than walking and looking at the views, a guide will describe the sights and it is a learning experience of our history.  You have enough time to enjoy the cable car, walk the walls but a walking tour of the old town is a must.  Cruise critic rules do not permit me to post specific recommendations.  Research our tourist bureau for ideas and reviews of our many restaurants.
