  1. To continue with my experience. I booked a food tour in San Juan with Celebrity. Having been there several times in the past I knew the streets were cobblestone and the sidewalks may or may not have had curb cuts and I'd be climbing up and down hills. The brochure from Celebrity said no wheelchairs allowed on this tour. When the tour guide saw my walker he called the tour operator- Flavors of Old San Juan- and then told me I couldn't go on the tour. I went to the shore excursion desk and told them what happened. One employee was sympathetic and wrote up my experience. The others told me they had nothing to do with it since they were not the tour operator. I believe Celebrity should state in their brochures if walkers/rollators are not allowed on specific tours. We people with mobility issues are functioning adults who know our limits and should be treated as adults.

  2. I just got back from a cruise on the Celebrity Equinox. I had arranged several excursions through their shore access department. For some reason that info never got to the folks at the shore excursion counter. Except for one employee, the others treated me poorly. They promised to get info for me and never did. They refused to recognize that their shore access dep't had contacted the tour operators and gotten approval for taking the rollator. They told me I couldn't use the open air buses when that was already approved. They were almost rude and decidedly unhelpful. So my advice to any of you who have mobility issues is to use your own judgment as to what you are comfortable doing but do not rely on Celebrity to help you and definitely do not rely on the tour operators to physically assist you.

  3. If you want to get to know Nassau better you could try "people to people." They match you with a local person with similar interests to spend much of the day with. They matched me with a woman about my age who had a similar job. We went to her house, met some of her friends, saw parts of the island away from the tourist areas, ate at her favorite restaurant and learned a lot. Just wanted to offer another idea for those who have been to Nassau many times. It's free and fun.

  4. I suggest you try any beach from Clearwater down to Pass a Grille. I lived there for 17 years and my favorite was Clearwater Beach. The Hilton is in the middle of the action but if there are still mom and pop motels you will still be within a block or two of the Gulf. Indian Rocks down will be cheaper. Still nice beaches but not the sugar sand of Clearwater and also not as crowded til you get to St. Pete Beach. The beach opposite the Hurricane Restaurant is a favorite also. The beaches are about a half hour from the port of Tampa so my advise would be to choose based on price as close to any beach as you can. Go to John's Pass  and downtown St. Petersburg. The Dali Museum is amazing. Chihuly also has a museum. Lots of good restaurants. I miss it.

  5. It sounds like everyone has their way of fending off motion sickness. I'd also suggest a short cruise to see how mom reacts. I get so seasick that being on a noodle in the Gulf of Mexico on a calm day makes me sick in 15 minutes. But I love to cruise. My solution is the Transderm Scop patch. Nothing else works as well ( or really, at all) for me. I think all ships have otc meclizine. If that works its the cheapest option but you just can't know ahead of time and the patch needs to be applied before sailing to be effective. Maybe mom can practice at home on a carnival ride or a car ride.

  6. I use a walker and have been to all 3 islands. I stayed near the port in Aruba since I had been there before and didn't like it. But in Curacao I went to the ostrich farm and the aloe farm and had no trouble getting around. I took a bus tour in Bonaire and walked around the town where we docked. Again no problem.

  7. I've been to Alaska on HAL. I thought they did an excellent job explaining what we were seeing. A naturalist came on board for the time we were in Glacier Bay. I found that HAL in general had more activities suited to those who liked an enriching experience than the other cruises I've been on. But I've never been on a Princess cruise so I cannot compare. Does Princess go into Glacier Bay? Some cruise lines cannot. It's really worth seeing.
