  1. I want to book a cruise to Alaska in June 2023 and Skagway and the White Pass Summit train is a must.  It looks like the train was running this year (just not into Canada) and looks like it is open for next year, but I'm not seeing any availability on their website.  Is there a way to make sure it isn't sold out (via cruise ship excursion) before I book a cruise?  Since Glacier NP is also a must, we will either be on Princess or HA.

I’ll suggest that you arrange the train tour your self rather than a ‘over priced’ ship excursion. book tickets in advance.

Normally the ship is doing the train in the morning.

You can book the Stegastein  viewpoint tour suggested by Ine in the morning and the train in the after noon - no need to stay in Myrdal - just take the same train back from Myrdal to Flåm.

Another option is a Fjord sailing at Nærøyfjord -  a UNESCO heritage site. Also a museum in Flåm.

I just got back from a Norway cruise that included Flam - and it was my favorite port by far.  We booked the train on our own and everyone loved it.  If you know you are paying for a scenic train ride, that is exactly what you are going to get.  Definitely take the same train back from Myrdal.  Also - sit on the right side (with 3 seats) - that was the best view.

I do hope to go back to Flam someday, and would definitely check out the Stegastein viewpoint as well as a Fjord sailing.

  3. Our ship will also be in Flam that day.  From my (very inadequate) reading of that chart, looks like we will be tendered.  If the cruise ship is selling train excursions for 9:45 am, do you think that is enough time for me to also get off the ship? My itinerary says we get in at 7 am, so I think that is more than adequate.  I would rather go early and times are already selling out (so I need to buy my tickets).

  4. I also want to experience the railway when I am in Flam in June.  I'm tempted to go with the cruise ship's "Railways and Waffles" tour, but can save $$ if I book the railway on my own.  Anyone know how good the waffles actually are?  I am unsure of logistics of stopping for the waffles ourselves - as it is the second to last stop, and then you have to catch the train to Myrdal and then return from there.

  5. We are booked on a 7 night cruise out of Rotterdam in June.  We will be flying in and out of Amsterdam - and coming in early as we've never been.  The Jordaan area of Amsterdam was recommended me to as where we would want to stay.  I'm on a budget and can't stay at most of the hotels that have been recommended on this forum; I just wanted to double check location wise that is where I should be looking.

Also - an afternoon flight back to the US on debarkation day should be fine, correct?  With or without cruise transfers.  I'm freaking out about our timeline and can't find anything from HA about specifics.

  6. I researched cruises for over a month before I booked my 7 day Norway cruise.  Reviews highly favor Holland America's Norse Legends itinerary over the Viking Saga.  However, Oslo was an absolute must-stop port for us, so I chose that.  I figure that I won't know that I'm not on the better one - it will be great because I'm in Norway, enjoying the fjords and my family for my birthday.

  7. I am new to Holland America cruising and will be on a 7 day cruise next year.  I thought I read somewhere that there were 2 gala nights, each 7 days.  Is that correct?  Also - I am someone that plans on skipping gala night, which is why I ask.

  8. What cruise are you on?  We are also cruising out of Rotterdam next June; flying into Amsterdam.  We are on the June 8th Holland America Rotterdam.  We don't have hotel yet either and are hoping to spend at least two days in Amsterdam prior to the cruise, but everything I've found online says the train is super easy - look for "Intercity" options rather than "Sprinter", which stop at every station.

  9. I am booked on the Viking Saga on the Rotterdam in June 2019.  Oslo was a must-stop for our group of 6, as my maternal grandmother was born there.  I am so excited and can't wait to explore Norway.  We splurged on a Neptune suite since we are going for my (small milestone) birthday.  Which is also how we chose the Rotterdam over the Nieuw Statendam, we couldn't get a Neptune suite when we were looking.
