You really don't need these.  They will take up valuable luggage space.  In 10 trips to Alaska and over 25 years living in the Seattle area, I have NEVER seen anyone wear these.

i am hoping i won't need them - but since we don't have waterproof (i am spraying my sneakers but they are canvas with lots of pores) or hiking shoes, these will suffice in emergency.  i will be happy to have them -and then get rid of them!

  2. we are going on our cruise next week and found these online.  i figure if we are sitting outside or on a whale watch, its a good option as it its very easy to carry around and pack up.  i plan to dispose after the trip. they are 14$ amazon prime.  the sole has some tread as well.  there are also silicone shoe covers you can purchase - prettier than but like the old fashioned rubbers that we used to put on our shoes oh so many years ago....

FWIW, we were able to rebook with Jayleen on almost no notice--but then our ship was seriously delayed getting to Juneau, so that trip didn't happen either. Jayleen graciously refunded payment since it was out of our control, even though she wasn't in any way responsible. We're fortunate enough to be taking another Alaska cruise in July, and we're again booked with Jayleen, and crossing our fingers that it will actually all go without a hitch this time.

I am sad to hear that Capt Alan may have to close shop.  we did get our refund and he had a spot with Jayleen for us, but our ship did not get in early enough for the tour she had available - but i did appreciate his effort.  I was able to book with Harve and Marve pretty easily.  looking forward to our trip. i am sorry that your initial trip did not work out but hope it's all good this month.

We were booked and cancelled as well due to Jack's passing.  We are a group of 9 so we couldn't take Jayleen's tour....we ended up booking with Harv & Marv.   But did you find out anything about when your refund will be available from the Scania?  I've left a voice mail and an email.  They are holding our $1519.  I looked it up and it looks like he passed in April, but we only just found out this week about it.

hi Cheryl - i just found out this week as well.  Captain Alan said i should get my refund 'in the coming days'.  i did not realize this happened quite a few weeks ago- and wonder why they are cancelling all the tours.  I did book harv and marvs experience as well for the small group.   I am glad you were able to rebook. i tried Jayleen, and a few others who all were booked.  I have heard great things about harv and marv so was pleased they had openings that date.

  5. Anyone in Juneau on Aug 3 looking to book a whale watch tour?  Mine got cancelled as Captain Jack has passed away sadly,  and they cancelled my trip (Whale watching Juneau - aboard the Scania).

Jayleen can accommodate but I need another passenger for her to open a tour.  Any takers?

Wow, that's a great price for those binoculars.

On Amazon it was a flash sale for a few hours for the wingspan binoculars and I was very pleased to purchase them at that price.  Perhaps that sale will return- I had not seen it before.

  7. SALE ALERT:  just bought on amazon - Wingspan optics spectator 8x32 for $37.

FYI I also bought the Harbor Freight 10x50 for $18.  They are very bright and clear with a wide field of view.  they are also bigger and heavier than i would like.  keeping those for the kids travelling with us.

  8. i just bought the Eddie Bauer 30L as well on sale.  This way i won't be trapped into carrying too much stuff - just what i will need.  May not be 'comfortable' but i am not hiking or carrying a Laptop daily,  so i am not worried.

I also have an osprey 20L but it's too stiff for my liking.

First of all, I found the tripod mount cover to be very tight on both of my binoculars. Try using a rubber mat to help unscrewing the cover off. Second, you will need an adapter to mount it on a tripod or monopod. You can find those universal binocular tripod adapter for a few dollars. If you can wait, eBay would be a good source for them. Here are some examples:

    https://www.amazon.com/BARSKA-AF10546-Binocular-Tripod-Adaptor/dp/B000BYH8EQ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1XEH2457DI7ZJ&keywords=binoculars+tripod+adapter&qid=1552859319&s=gateway&sprefix=binoculars+tripod%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-3

    https://www.amazon.com/Ueasy-Binocular-Connecting-Telescope-Universal/dp/B01IF16XE2/ref=sr_1_7?crid=1XEH2457DI7ZJ&keywords=binoculars+tripod+adapter&qid=1552859319&s=gateway&sprefix=binoculars+tripod%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-7

They are around 50% cheaper on eBay from overseas but may take 6-8 weeks for delivery.

thank you for the info!  very helpful.

The binoculars at HF was recommended by other cruisers. It has pretty wide angle. If one has problem holding it steadily, it has a tripod mount on it according to the reviews.

i just purchased these harbor freight 10x50-  with the 20% off coupon they were $18.  i was hesitant to get 10x but at this price, even if they go overboard it will be worth it.  The image seems sharp but these are my first binoculars.  I do see a knob for a tripod but i don't understand how it would work - any insight appreciated.  I have a Monopod for my camera and thought that could help steady these.  thanks friends.

After reading many reviews, I am going to get the one at Harbor Freight. Can't beat that price (particularly after 20% off coupon) with the quality reported on the reviews.

would you be so kind as to share a link - i would be interested to check them out.  thank you!

They worked very well - DH used them the most and mostly on our DIY land.  I very often just used the zoom on the camera.  We did have another pair of binoculars with us (old) that were never used.  Truthfully, they were great to have but also, just taking in the scenery with the "naked eye" was just as great!  Enjoy your trip!

Glad it was all great - thank you!

just ordered 2 different pair from amazon, will return either if they do not fit our needs (they will be here tomorrow )

Wingspan Optics Spectator 8X32 Compact Binoculars

Gosky 8x42 Binoculars for Adults, Compact HD

was curious to this brand as it has an adapter to attach a cell phone. Might be sending back if junk or weight is to much

We tried x32 and x42 models at a store, and could not tell much difference if any  between the two

I would appreciate to know your thoughts after trying them out!

I decided on these ones in the end , have used them a couple of times here when we go out walking and seem to be fine , i hope they are suitable for our cruise as have read mixed reports on the 10x or 8 x being better.

i hope you enjoy your cruise and your binoculars!

The 10x42 Celestron Outland mentioned by Tyskie from AMZN. Those Wingspan 8x32 look to have very good reviews and light gathering is really not so much the issue with what we will be looking at in Alaska.

thanks for clarifying.  i think i personally want to stay down from the 10x due to motion as i am sensitive to it.

  16. 1 hour ago, blazer58 said:

The Spectator is the one we are looking at due to size and weight.

It's also a little less than the Celestron

thank you.  what specs are you looking at on the spectator?  As i stated in my post i am looking at 8x32 but someone mentioned 8x25.  I want to be sure i am going to see what i want without the motion issues that a 10x or higher afford.  I am starting to understand the mag and the lens diameter, exit pupils, etc.  but not sure how much of an improvement the 32 is over the 25 within the same line of binoculars.  I am also not sure i will get much more from these than using my camera lens which is either my 75-300 if i am walking around or my 70-200 2.8F which will really capture stop-action but is exceptionally heavy, so i will use that while sitting on deck/balcony.  BTW there is only a $5 difference on Amazon between the Celestron Outland X 8x42 and the  Wingspan Optic Stectator 8x32.  Field of view is approx same but the Celestron weighs 7 oz more so i am leaning to the wingspan. I think I will order something and do some home research and figure this out.  so confusing!

They are now $64.99 @AMZN. The reviews are very good. I just sent a question to our 3 astronomy list servers to see if anyone might have looked thru a pair. The specs make them look really good but I don't know how well they are corrected for sharp viewing. 10x might, in my opinion be too much power to easily hand hold on a small whale watch boat. I'm taking Nikon Action 7x35 w/10 degree field of view. Joy is taking a set of Steiner 10x42. Both are sharp but I think the wider field of the 7x is an advantage. If they can be held still (not likely on a moving boat) I'll take 10x any day, especially Joy's Steiners.

which  $64.99 binoculars are you referencing Masterdrago?  i think i personally am leaning to the Wingspan 8x32 b/c they are lighter than the Celestron 8x42 but welcome any thoughts.  thanks.

We were just trying out binoculars in the store this weekend.

We have just about decided on wing span 8x32

We have three older pairs at home, one 10x50, and another that's 7x-15x35, and a really compact 12x25 pair.

The 10X50, to much motion, the 12X25 same problem and not enough light, the 7x-15 we are considering taking with

which wingspan version?  there seem to be a bunch of 8x32 at the same price point and I am not sure what the difference is!  I am narrowed to the Wingspan Optic Spectator 8x32 vs the Celestron Outland X 8x42. I honestly will use these only for the cruise and excursions, sporting events, and sometimes concerts.  I have a good camera that I will bring as well so i do not want to spend over $100 on binoculars.  Help?!

Buying binoculars was so confusing-we bought this thru Amazon, I believe about $50.

They state they are waterproof, fog proof & can be used with glasses-we don’t go until June but DH has been using them in FL -so far so good.

Hi GolfMommy17, sorry it took me a while to get back to you on this one! Here is the listing from the SS website. At the very bottom, it says it will only be offered on 3 voyages: the first three of the season. I'm not sure why, but I'll report back when I learn more.

I'll be on 6911, which leaves Seward on May 27th. The downside is that we are too early for very much bear action; the upside is that we'll be there for prime whale watching. Since you are sailing in August, I'll be able to report back on your other question as well, about good viewing spots on glacier days.

79 days to go for us! Can't wait!

Thank you for this and the below information.  I hope you enjoy the trip - maybe it's a 'test' and they will open it up after the trial period.  I'll keep watching for it.

  21. Hello SS Alaska travelers - I am new to SS, traveling on Muse Seward to Vancouver.  We have 2 cabins, one port and one starboard.  Will both of these have good views of Hubbard Glacier and The Inside Passage from our balconies on our sea days?  Never cruised Alaska and want to be sure we can all experience beautiful views from the quiet of our cabins if desired.  If not, how crowded do the decks become - having only travelled on megaships prior I am used to the 'stake out your space and never give it up' mentality. I am hoping for a bit more relaxed experience on the Muse.  Thanks for your thoughts!
