  1. There's something wrong with your line of thinking. I'll be well dressed. In shorts. Not everything is gym shorts.

Royal now allows shorts in the dining rooms on non-formal nights. Doesn't mean you have to participate if you don't wish to. But to actually look down on others? Get real. I could not imagine going through life with such a shallow mindset. Or if it really bothers you, sail a different line. Royal obviously made the change to cater to guest wishes.

If your biggest problem in life is a stranger in the caribbean wearing shorts, bless your heart, I want your life.

Careful what you wish for my friend.

  2. My first cruise (20 years ago this month, actually) we made sure we had a lot of "port" days, because we were so worried that we'd be bored. Now, not only do I favor itineraries with lots of sea days, but on my last three cruises, I never left the ship. Granted, there is a lot more to do on the mega-ships now than there was on the Monarch in 1996, but still, I've grown to think of the ship itself as the destination, and sitting on my balcony watching the sea go by as the real "event" for which I paid my fare.

Sea days are the best! Sailing Anthem tomorrow. Third time on this 5 day Bermuda. I keep saying I cannot wait for Sunday. Me, my balcony, music, room service and the sea!!!!! That's it. I'm in heaven.

  3. Agreed. I know I am a traditional but agree. The cruise ship provides you nice elegant and formal dining environments and experience. You are eating in a nice restaurant with professional servers. In return one should be respectful with their choice of dress. You should look are act like you are going out for a fast food restaurant.

  4. Oh my goodness. Its not necessary to keep quoting Rccl website. You know when dressed appropriately. Men. No shorts. There is no such thing as dress shorts for men. Seriously. Wear slacks. Change after dinner if you are so uncomfortable. I'm reminded of the Charlie Sheen character that never wore pants. Its not this difficult. Or wear shorts but stop pretending it's appropriate. Its not. As quoted in the website a million times.

  5. Leaving this weekend for a 5-day Bermuda run on Anthem. We arrive back in Bayonne on Thursday morning. How is traffic heading south in the Jersey turnpike on a Thursday morning? Is it better to leave early, later or it doesn't matter?

Trying to decide whether we should get an early start like we would on a weekend or are better off taking our time and leaving after the morning rush. Thanks for any help!

Sailing with you. After rush hour. Definitely. We are native New Yorkers. Relax. Take the later debarkation. See you Saturday!

  6. I miss the old days of preparing the envelope and presenting it personally to our cabin steward, our waiters, etc. But the days of the MDR are gone so I guess this is more efficient. Gosh I sound so old (only 55 ) My first adult vacation was a cruise at age 18. Been hooked since.

  7. Dumb statement. Not only has Royal accepted shorts for women basically forever, but have not officially blessed them for men too. Some of us know how to dress nice in shorts too. It's not all gym clothing you know. If you're not crawling on the floor looking under tables you won't have anything to be pissed off at now, would you?

So who exactly is the disrespectul one calling people bums?

Women have it a bit easier. A nice "bermuda" short and a lovely blouse makes a nice outfit. I don't think anyone meant disrespect.

  8. Just a couple tips. Pack swim suits and sun screen in your carry on so after lunch your kids and you can hit the flow rider and pools best time to swim. Most people are walking around checking out the ship.

Have your teens go to teen club the first night its the night the cliques form. Everyone is looking for someone to hang out with. We make rules like always breakfast and dinner with us but they are free besides that. Its their vacation after all, different families different rules. Some teens are totally free to never see their parents all week.

Cruise ships have been selling the charms of tanzanite for years. JMO but if your actually looking at buying jewelry research it at home so you know what a good price it. You can get pretty cheap tanzanite on ebay FYI.

If you looking to bring stuff back from your cruise let me recommend Sheridan's. They will sell it in port and on ship. Its white chocolate and coffee liquor that layers and its YUMMY. You can not buy it in the US.

There are websites that show your ships in port this is the one I use.

    cruisetimetables.com

Sheridan's used to be available in the US. Remember my grandma buying it for holidays. Nice memory. Think I'll get a bottle to put away for Christmas. My family will be surprised. Oh the little things lol

And most definitely packing an old Sea Pass card. No hot room on my vacation!

  9. I don't see where priority embarkation and waiting in the suite lounge until cabins are ready and escorted (by concierge) disembarkation from the suite lounge is listed anymore for Sky class. I know I'm not crazy.....I have seen this listed before. Am I missing something? I believe it was already a suite privilege before the new program. Can somebody help me out?

    Thanks so much,

    Dawn

Again this was in the email from our concierge. I will let you know when I get back. Keep your fingers crossed.

  10. The historical charm of cruising was having two options for dinner, Early or Late with the evening nightly entertainment wrapped around them to facilitate all passengers having an opportunity to see the nightly show. It was the way the 'cruise experience was packaged'. It set apart a cruise vacation from anything else.

To compare it to a night out at a restaurant is a faulty comparison.

I can eat at home alone with DH anytime. We can go to a restaurant for dinner alone any time.

We tremendously enjoy tablemates on a cruise, whether it is a short weekend getaway or for a week or more. It is fun to hear about other peoples excursions or activities that they enjoyed or things they have planned.

Agree and agree. Oh the good ole days.

  11. We booked Sky class months ago on Oasis for Jan 2017 to celebrate my 60th birthday. We have been on Oasis before and the ports many times before. We wanted to enjoy the amenities being offered. I am particularly concerned about the wording of access to the Coastal Kitchen. When we booked, Sky class had all day access to the Coastal Kitchen. Now the wording is dinner only for Sea, access for Sky and all day access for Star. Sounds very vague to me. In suite dining isn't listed anymore, either. I will call tomorrow and see what they have to say and am following this thread to find out what others are learning. It does bother me that they are already trimming back a program that they advertised so heavily and just started a few months ago. We can cancel our cruise now if we don't like the changes, but what about after final payment?

Sailing iin Sky class leaving Saturday. The email from our concierge states all day Coastal Kitchen access. In suite dining listed as well. Hoping it doesn't change for you. I know how disappointed I would have been.

  12. I think many of the complaints about nasty or lazy crew members can be traced back to passengers who treat hard working crew as if they are beneath them. I've witnessed it many times. I myself find this attitude horrible. A smile and a thank you will get you a long way. (And no offense to vegans, they can be hard to handle with their food requests).

  13. To all of you fighting health battles, may you find joy in the little things, humor in the odd and bizarre and comfort in your friends and family.

As the person who often tells the patient the new diagnosis or tells the person who has fought the good fight that the fight is done, I find very little to complain about on a cruise. It truly amazes me how cranky some people can get about so little. I am glad for them that the worst thing in their lives is that their food is served at the wrong temperature or that they have to wait for an elevator or that the ship serves coke products rather than Pepsi.

    Amen

  14. My "survival" has been viral Cardiomyopathy. At the time of diagnosis, I was given 6 months. It's been 6 years. We (daughters, grandson and me) decided our motto would be "why not?" so we booked our first ever Med cruise. We had never been to Europe. I considered it a trip of a lifetime. Then we booked a second one with a different itinerary. Who is lucky enough to get to do that? Now we have been on several more cruises and have one planned for Christmas and one for next summer. How lucky am I? So when I see the petty complaints about the coffee, the dress code "violations" and even the chair hogs, I feel a little sorry for these folks who don't know how to appreciate LIFE. Our last cruise wasn't ruined because of it, but what happened did affect our dinner every night in the MDR. We were seated next to a table of four young adults (2 couples traveling together) who looked like professionals. One was a Vegan, one was a Vegetarian and the other two had multiple food allergies. On night one, they spent 10 minutes racking the poor waiter over the coals because there was no Vegan menu (like on the Independence). They insisted on seeing the Head Waiter who received the same loud, long lecture while he apologizing and offering everything but his first born to no avail. Every night, it took the waiter, asst. waiter and the Head waiter to get them served and they still complained, up to and including asking that the chef list all the ingredients in the specially prepared dishes to make sure he didn't "screw with their system." They sent dishes back and they came to the dining room one night asking for specific dishes to be prepared and brought to them in "to go" containers. You could just see the poor waiter knot up into a ball when he saw them prance into the dining room (late) every night. They snickered and made nasty remarks while he was scurrying around for their numerous special requests. He was so consumed with them that he got a few of our dishes wrong, failed to bring a couple of dishes and we sat with empty glasses a few times and we never mentioned it. PLEASE be nice to the crew and staff. These people work incredibly hard to please us all. Seeing the disrespect they showed these people was the closest I've seen to anything ruining our cruise. I loathe hearing people bully and belittle others. It's unacceptable. No one in the service industry deserves to be treated disrespectfully, on a ship or on land. These people just flat out bullied the crew and staff. If for no other reason, just remember, they are the last ones handling the food you put in your mouth, folks. :D

I wish you 60 more great years. I love your motto of why not. Reminds me of Russel Wilson (qb Seattle Seahawks, yes I'm a big sports fan) his motto Why Not Us. I say that frequently. Why the heck not us? To win, to dream, to live, to cruise to do anything.

  15. I miss traditional dining with the table for 8. From my first cruise at age 18 until recently when cruising has veered away from traditional dining, I was lucky to meet great people who became our friends for the rest of the cruise and a couple of times beyond that. I always thought it was a great way to make fast friends that first night. But I love meeting new people. This cruise will be a table for 2. Not complaining but I'd love that big old table for 8. And yes I love DH lol

  16. To all of you fighting cancer I sincerely wish you the best. Many cruises filled with sunshine and great times. As I have posted recently this is my first vacation in five years as my mom fights the fight against ovarian cancer. We planned this quickly as she is in a good phase. I plan on doing everything and nothing. Talking to everyone and listening to the sea. No complaints no tears not sweating the small stuff.

  17. In addition to the soda, coffee, what other people are wearing, the wine brand drives me crazy. Well I only drink brand x, and they don't serve it on board. Then try something different, you might find a new favorite. One of my favorites I heard was some woman loudly complaining about the free crappy sparkling wine she got as opposed to real champagne.
