Temporary Pause of Global Operations Extended through June 30

Princess Cruises Extends Temporary Pause of Global Operations Through June 30 Due to Global COVID-19 Outbreak

Cruise Line Also Announces Cancellation of Alaska Gulf Voyages, and Land and Sea program for First Time in Its History

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In continued response to the impact of the COVID-19 global outbreak and the recent order from the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Princess Cruises is canceling all voyages through June 30, 2020. The cruise line had previously announced a voluntary pause for two months (60 days), impacting voyages departing March 12 to May 10, 2020.

In addition, Princess Cruises can confirm modifications to the Alaska season, which includes the cancellation of all Princess Alaska Gulf cruise and cruisetours. The five wilderness lodges, trains and buses operated by Princess in Alaska will not open this summer. We will continue round-trip sailings from Seattle to Alaska on Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess.

"This global outbreak continues to challenge our world in unimaginable ways. We recognize how disappointing this is to our long-term business partners and thousands of employees, many of whom have been with us in Alaska for decades," said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. "We hope everyone impacted by these cancellations – especially our guests, travel advisor partners, teammates, and the communities we visit – understand our decision to do our part to protect the safety, health and well-being of our guests and team. We look forward to the brighter days and smooth seas ahead for all of us."

Each ship will have a unique return to service date, based on the previously published cruise itineraries, with some modifications, departing after July 1. Details about the canceled voyages can be found here.

Princess Cruises is offering two cancellation options. Guests currently booked on these canceled voyages, who have paid in full, will receive a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) equivalent to 100% of the cruise fare paid and, as an added incentive, an additional 25% FCC. Guests must use their credits on a cruise that sails on or before May 1, 2022. No action is required for guests to receive this offer and they will be notified by e-mail once the credits have been issued.

Alternatively, guests can receive a full refund for all monies paid in full on their booking through this online form. Requests must be received by May 31, 2020, or they will receive the Future Cruise Credit option. Guests who have not yet paid in full will receive a refund of all monies paid.

Princess will protect travel advisor commissions on bookings for cancelled cruises that were paid in full, in recognition of the critical role travel advisors play in the cruise line’s business and success.

Princess asks guests to please delay in calling the Reservation Call Center due to high call volumes. Guests and their travel advisors will be sent communications on how to manage cancellations, rebook another voyage, or request a refund.

The most current information and instructions for booked guests affected by these cancellations can be found on Information on Impacted & Cancelled Cruises.

  2. Delta has done this to us, several times in the past few years. I’m just like you and check because I book early too, and that’s how we found out each time. They have never emailed me. We also were pushed out of first class 3 yrs ago, and when I called, they tried to put us on a full plane, in seats in rows 1, 3, 4 and 5. (We had our kids flying with us). I said absolutely not are they seating us all over the plane. I immediately looked up the schedule while they were on the phone with me and found a flight that 1. Had a better schedule and 2. We could at least sit 2 and 2, like originally planned. We don’t fly Delta to Alaska anymore, too many changes happen.

The "barring unforeseen problems" part is the issue.  The Park Service has said (and hasn't revised it) that assessments will be undertaken throughout January and February.  It's currently -23°F at Healy, so any geotechnical work at the site is going to have to wait.  In my view the statement above errs on the side of optimism, but it's probably what I'd put out rather than scaring off thousands of potential visitors (and the millions of dollars they bring with them.)

Just an observation, but it seems like cruisers as a group tend to want to have everything arranged many months in advance, rather than being patient in making plans.  This might be a year when, uncomfortable as it might make people, the smart move is just to wait until the picture clears.  It's VERY unlikely that things will be sold out or overbooked (hotels, tours, etc.) between now and, say, April, and by April we might have some definitive answers on the road and conditions in general at Denali.

I see what you’re saying about them not wanting to scare off visitors. However, I’m looking at it the other way. I believe they are going to do all they can to get the road open. They have had some time since the original announcement of the possible road closure, to take photos and to start working on a solution to get ahead of the situation.

As for people wanting to have plans in place many months in advance, if that’s what they want to do, that’s fine. I just thought that putting out info as it comes out would help them, no matter what one chooses to do.

At this time, park managers anticipate that the road may only open to Mile 43 on May 20, 2020, rather than to Toklat River (Mile 53), which is the normal distance the road opens each year on May 20. Barring unforeseen problems, the park is committed to opening the entirety of the Denali Park Road on or before June 15, 2020. This could be up to one week after the normal date the entire road opens for bus traffic (June 8, generally). Visitors arriving on or after June 15 would experience no delays or issues with their visit, other than occasional short delays for on-going maintenance throughout the summer.

This was an update on Jan 22, for those of you that may be heading to DENALI this summer. You can read the article in full for further details with the link below. Happy planning everyone.

  6. Love all your photos! Great way to do a trip report! We leave in 6 days for 3 weeks of fun. We’re doing Denali first, for fall colors, then traveling up to Fairbanks and down the Richardson Hwy back to Anchorage. Then we fly to Juneau, where we will stay for a few days, ferry to Haines and Skagway, then back to Juneau to fly back to Anchorage and spending the last 3 days south of the city. Your pictures have me even more excited, if that’s possible. 😊 Alaska is my favorite place on earth. Thank you so much for posting!!

Thanks so much!  What an awesome pdf.  When it works right, this site is truly an amazing resource.

Looks like our ship will be docking at AJ also.   Do you happen to know the details on AJ?  Last time I was on the Radiance of the Seas and they docked close to everything.  From my understanding AJ is about a mile away.  Is there a shuttle and is it free?  Or is there a small fee?  Cash?   We are on the Solstice and our ship arrives last.

I’m sorry, I don’t know details about AJ dock. I’ve never been to Juneau, but we are going to be there in September on an independent trip. We always use that site when planning our trips to AK to see what ships will be where on our dates. Hopefully someone else with experience will come along and give you specifics.

  8. After reading more, we loved the Apollo as well. Huge portions and a little bit to please everyone!!

My last post referenced Resurrection Bay VRBO...you passed it on your way out of Seward on your Kenai Fjords Cruise. Big house on a cliff to the left.

We also splurged and had a private boat pick us up on the beach and we had a bbq with fresh cause halibut in front of Aialik Glacier. We sat there long enough for the entire face of the glacier to calf!! Then my youngest son (16 at the time), swam out to one of the icebergs that had calved when we first arrive. It was his “best thing I’ve ever done” moments in his life! I have a video, but don’t know how to post it. It was such a magical day!

    Love all your pictures!! 😍

Wow!  What are the odds that someone reading this review would have stayed in the same cabin?  Incredible!  Yes, it's a beautiful place.  It was very hard to leave there.  DH and I agreed it was the best VRBO we have ever rented.  Thanks for following along!

Small world, that’s for sure,, We also loved the cabin, probably second on my list of the many we stayed in over the years. #1...Granite Point Lodge, 9 miles out on Resurrection Bay. Private beach, kayak and SUP boards included and tide pooling on that beach, all alone! It was spectacular!!  Stayed there during the same trip in 2017 and are going back next year. Skipping Seward this year, just too many other things we haven’t seen before!

Really cool cabin out on Stampede Rd...curious if you get reply’s about if it’s a rental or not.

Will be here, waiting for the rest of your report!!!

  10. Thanks for posting this DYI! We have never been on a cruise, always have done a DYI!

I’m learning a lot about cruises...thinking if we do one eventually, it will be an uncruise or the like. However, I’m enjoying all the info on this site!

Awesome pictures! We stayed at the same VRBO in July 2017. I agree about the deck...we spent most of our time at the cabin on the upper deck enjoying the view!! Can’t wait to read and see more!

  11. I have an idea, book a shuttle bus to Wonder Lake, it’s not that much more and you can still get off at Eielson and hike. Or if the mountain is out, you could go all the way in and still get off and spend some time at Eielson on the way back. I took a quick peak and on July 16, there are plenty of early times for Wonder lake shuttle. That would give you peace of mind and guarantee a ride! 😊
