  1. we booked with both our ship and with a private company. we booked with our ship for Pearl Habor, it seems like everyone takes that tour and it was one of the cheaper tours our ship offered. it was a lot of people, but there was a lot of people at Pearl Harbor, so it was not really possible to skip the crowds anyways for this tour.  we booked with Hawaii Cruise Excursions for a volcanos park and swim tour for Hilo and a boat ride and beach day for Kona. Both tours had 6 of us on tour and were cheaper than our ships tours. our ship didn't even offer either of the tours we booked privately and it was great to get away from the crowds.

  2. we have always had good experiences with Island Marketings tours, small tours with local guides, usually about 4 -6 of us tour. we have found tours with them for Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Roatan and Hawaii. for Hawaii they are hawaiicruiseexcursions.com We took their volcano and swim tour, which no one else was offering, and loved it ❤️

We are considering this tour. Was it large group tour and did you enjoy it? Hearing some mixed reviews and would love to know what you thought.

    Thanks!

Our tour was not crowded...it was just 4 of us and our guide. We loved this tour and would highly recommend it ...it was really special!

  4. If you want to do something that isn't a party bus, you should be able to find cave tubing close to Belize City...I think the one I went on was only about 30 minutes from Belize City. We really enjoyed it 🙂 the water is fresh water, not salt as its river water...water temp was about 75F, I would guess. the river has a current, so you float through the tour, almost like a lazy river. in the sun, I was warm, but when floating through the cave tunnels, I was cold. if you get cold easy, I would suggest wearing a water top, I had on only my bkini top and I had the chills when we weren't in the sun.

Thanks @SunshineGirl100. Do you mind sharing the name of the independent operator? I ideally would love to go with something similar but there is comfort (though expense) in going with a known entity!

the email I have for them is reservations@hawaiicruiseexcursions.com

we paid around $120 each including the park entrance fee

    it was fabulous 🙂

  6. Our favorite experience was in Hilo with an independent operator....we found a tour that included the Volcano National Park as well as swimming afterwards, we all loved it 🙂  we got to see the National Park and then we got to cool off and swim, it was the best of both worlds. the company we went with had no one else booked for this tour when we went, it was just us and our tour guide, we loved it. if you get the chance, I would recommend this for your day in Hilo.

Has anyone used a private tour to go to the green monkey reserve.  are you able to interact with them at all

      Thanks

with the Monkey Reserve, you actually only see monkeys during feeding time, so sometimes you can see them, and sometimes not. we took a tour that took us to a place our guide personally knew where some monkey familes live....and YES we got to feed them....it was so awesome! there were babies too. our guide said it was his personal spot and he visits these little monkeys a few times a few times each week

  8. the water taxi ferries ALL stop at Caye Caulker before continuing on to San Pedro.

San Pedro is a half hour more past Caye Caulker...so it adds an hour onto your travel time.

you can get off at caye caulker and walk around or rent a bike...we don't have real cars on our streets, just bikes and golf carts.

you can walk front street along the beach and you will pass by all the restaurants and shops...

caye caulker is closer to belize city, its smaller so easier to see and its cheaper than San Pedro.

While both islands have their good traits, as you are on a limited time schedule, I would definitely recommend visiting Caye Caulker in stead of San Pedro.

  9. Have you looked into Caye Caulker? There are Water Taxis that run all day from Belize City to the cayes starting from 7am. they run almost every hour. Caye Caulker is the closest island to Belize, its a 50 minute boat ride to the cayes, on calm shallow waters as you are inside of the barrier reef. Most boats have an upper deck if you want to be outside in the sun and breeze or you can stay downstairs. the water taxis are very reliable and as they have a fleet of boats, they always operate. I think round trip tickets are about US$20 to Caye Caulker.

once on the caye, you can walk everywhere as our streets are sandy and we ride bikes and drive golf carts. we have 2 famous places to swim, The Split and Koko King...both are unique and beautiful!

I have twins and a third and my experience is 180°. Driving myself, especially on a small island is easier and lets me control everything, including what to see. I want to see what I want to see, based on my research of a place, not based on what someone else thinks I should see.

I guess we have had different experiences! When I'm traveling in a new place, I prefer someone driving that is an expert on where we are. I don't know where the closest bathrooms are...I don't know where the best place is to get an ice cream or find an ATM. our tour guide did what we wanted and we had and expert to handle all the work. I was able to be a passenger with my children instead of being the driver or the navigator. But I am not a big fan of driving...I live someplace where we only have bikes and golf carts...so driving to me is definitely stressful 🙂

Hi, I have 3 daughters 6,5 and 3 years old

yes they will enjoy beach and swimming, I do not think that they will enjoy museums,

    Thank you for your advice.

When we was traveling with our twin boys, I found the best tours for us were private tours. With little kids, I personally found it more stressful when we tried to drive ourselves or take a tour with other people. When we drove, we had to know where to go and what to do which always is stressful in a new place. When we went on group tours, our kids never want to wait for everyone else. they want to move at their own speed, being able to do what we want. My advice would be to enjoy a private tour with your little family where you can. Let your tour guide do all the work, and you enjoy your time with your little family 🙂
