That's not always true...

For flight Tokyo-New York at first was given indirect through Montreal, then per request changed to direct.

On another occasion direct flight wasn't granted due to unavailable seats.

On third occasion direct flight required extra surcharge.

In my opinion, it depends on circumstances.
