Hi everyone - I'm cruising in just a few short days, and we are stopping at Cococay, and I was curious about some things, hope someone can answer! I'm fond of the water activities and slides, wife is not. I will most likely get the Thrill Waterpark pass so I can have fun, but the wife just wants to chill out by a beach in the sand, or by a pool. Is she able to get off the boat and go to to the island to relax in the sand and sun without me having to pay for her entry onto the island? I don't mind paying if I have to, I was just curious, and she is asking me. She said she can also stay by the pool on the ship while I go off, but I do want to spend some time with her, even if going together to the beach....Any info is appreciated...thanks!

To get onto the island is free. She is free to lay on the beach or around the Oasis pool.

As I approach 70 and am still an avid cruiser, there are certain things that I used to think were almost mandatory or things that I would obsess about prior to the cruise.  I do still obsess about cabin location and whether there is a wrap-around promenade, but beyond that I'm pretty well satisfied by most any day on the ocean.  I no longer feel the need to.....

Be the first on or off the ship.  As long as I get on before the ship sails, I'm good.

Attend every production show.  I find most of them annoyingly over amplified anyway.

Use a lounger on the Melanoma Deck.  I enjoy a lounger on the promenade much more.

Get off the ship in every Caribbean port.  Been there, and they all start to look alike anyway.

Use ship excursions.  Some of my best days have been walking around the port city and discovering a small coffee shop or cafe to enjoy.  Beats marching to the tour guide's clock on a crowded excursion bus.

Eat evening meals in the MDR.  I find it much more relaxed to eat breakfast and lunch in the MDR, and then have a light evening meal in the buffet.  Frees up a lot of m y time in the evening also.

To a youngster, I probably sound like an old curmudgeon, but one of the beauties of cruising is that you are free to enjoy the cruise and the ship in your own way.

    How about you?

I no longer need to travel on the Mega Hotels (I don't think they are ships cause it doesn't seem like cruising to me).  I personally don't need all the bells and whistles.  I like cruising......... IMHO

My family loves sailing Cunard. On our last cruise they were ages 12 & 15. They do not take advantage of the kids club activities. They prefer to participate in the adult activities with us. My daughter loved the RADA classes and the daytime plays and music. My son learned to play bridge. We all participated in ballroom dance, paddle tennis, organized games, the planetarium, checked out library books, etc. Don't tell my husband, but my son is my favorite ballroom dance partner! I love twirling around the floor with him. The other passengers onboard always made my children feel welcome. There are plenty of activities for open minded, well-behaved young people onboard.

    That is so awesome!!!!!!

Now this worries me slightly,we are considering a TA next Summer, the ship itself & the itinerary I find really interesting BUT I hate dressing up,on holiday T shirt & shorts are my comfort zone!😎

I would highly recommend you consider another cruise line.  It is my understanding that Cunard is very strict about their dress code.  Cunard is a more formal cruise line.  T-shirt and shorts would be more acceptable on RCCL, NCL or Carnival.

  5. Please forgive my ignorance and I mean no disrespect, but I must ask why would a family with children choose to cruise on Cunard?  Clearly the activities and the ship itself is not geared towards children.  Won't they be bored?  I would think one of the family mass market cruise lines would better suit families.  Just asking.

    Mes chers,

You will have a grand time! As others have said, QM2 is a very different ship from everything else on the water. I never have any feeling that I’m in a mob scene, walking the Promenade Deck (7) is an endless joy; if the weather is too severe you can still get outside on the aft decks-as well as your balcony; if you are doing a TA, other than in high summer, choose a sheltered balcony, you can get some air and privacy at the same time. I often take things to read-like piled-up ‘New Yorkers’-or a big book. Of course I always find stuff to read in the wonderful library-one just has time to do what one wants. You can do lots or do nothing, It’s grand! The new Verandah is quite good , though I miss Todd English's burgers😋The Indian alternative is really fine-I’ve never tried the other two.

I often bump into folks that I have crossed with before and they can be fun-yes there are repeaters like me - lot’s of us. And don’t worry about the Atlantic-QM2 was built for whatever comes and she handles rough weather very well. SO ENJOY😁

Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry.  We are soooooooo looking forward to our voyage..... 🙂

It's simply a serene experience. Once you are out of sight of land, the world simply seems to stop.  Having been on numerous cruises a couple of decades ago with family and friends, I find I prefer the quiet elegance of the QM 2 experience.  The only advice I really can offer is that if you do not now regularly negotiate the dance floor, then take a few lessons before you leave home -- and please dress for dinner. A quality tux and and elegant evening gown make a statement about your world view, and the QM 2 is the perfect place to enjoy the life you have built.

It's just about impossible not to make new friends for life on the liner.

Thank you.  I am trying to find a place around me to take some dance lessons.  It's been a while since I twirled around the dance floor.  🙂

  8. Hi everyone.....hubby and I have been on about 70 cruises......RCCL, NCL, Holland America.  We are scheduled to sail on QM2 in Oct 2021 fourteen day roundtrip transatlantic.  What differences can we expect?  Thank you for taking the time to answer.  Have a great day.

  9. Hubby and I are going on the 14 day roundtrip transatlantic from new york.  we will have time in Southampton.  What should we do in Southampton?  Is a visit to London to far?  We have no idea what to do, your suggestions will be of great help. THANK YOU.
