I was aboard..the ship broke from it's moorings in La Spezia. Lost a gangway. It slid backwards and hit another cruise ship. No damage to that ship, and very little damage to the Constellation. No one was evacuated. But, because we were going to be very late getting to Civetavecchia, they put passengers on busses ( at midnight) who needed to get to FCO. It was a 6 1/2 hour bus ride through the night. :classic_blink:

Communication from Constellation captain was inadequate..and organization to get on the buses very chaotic.

I was not impressed as to how it was all handled. No compensation as yet. ( I am not holding my breathe.) If the delay going to Civitevecchia was soley due to weather then I understand. However if the delay was caused by the collision then Celebrity needs to step up and make it right. Of course I am sure I'll never know the real cause for the delay.

    Hi WEndy,

Hoping you and Maddie made it home safely. It seems peoples experiences differed wildly... There was a dent on the Costa ship, saw someones picture, but mostly cosmetic and our window washing stuff fell off the ship. I agree that the communication was poor all around. We were lucky to have stayed on board, been transported to the Hilton, Put up overnight and fed and rebooked for very early the next day. They put us on the shuttle to the airport too. It was hard to communicate with the ladies doing all that but it got done and we arrived home on the 31st around 3:00,

The weather was certainly to blame and the damage to those towns is just awful! I doubt we will see anything but a letter from Celebrity would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing our shuttle... take care.

Here's hoping your weather is better than the forecast suggests. Think positive -- weather is very changeable.

    Enjoy your adventure!

    HI Cruise Mom,

I just wanted to say thank you to you and others who really helped me figure out my hotel in Rome before our cruise on Oct. 19th. The Hotel Navonna was perfect for us.. Loved the price, the character and the location. Thanks for the advice on how much we could realistically tackle in such a short period. Your insights were invaluable! I need to come back and spend more time of course... also we missed Livorno due to the weather so did not get to Florence and Pisa so lots of reasons to come back! Ciao

We are currently in Sardinia, on an Oceania cruise. We have been loyal Celebrity cruisers, but decided to try a smaller ship this time. We have been in Italy for a week, with rain every day except one. Not fun, but we understand some cities have suffered horribly from the storms. Because of this awful weather, we have missed several ports, most of them being the reason we chose this itinerary. We are wondering if this is due to our ship being smaller in size than Celebrity ships, as this ship goes into smaller ports. We never experienced this on a Celebrity cruise, so are wondering if it is happening to everyone in the Mediterranean, or just the smaller ships using smaller ports.

We are on vacation, so we’re ok, just a little disappointed. Can anyone tell us if it’s big vs small ships/ports, or happening to all cruises throughout the Mediterranean?  We hope these cities recover quickly. They are losing so much from cancelled cruise ships!  Thank you.

So far we have missed Portofino, Italy  and Bandol, France. We were in Florence and Rome last week and we had horrible storms all week.

we just got back from The Celebrity Constellation... Oct. 19th -30th which turned into the 31st, We began in Rome with sunny weather and remained that way until we started to head back to Italy. We were caught in those terrible storms. We skipped the port of Portofino but took an excursion there by bus from La Spazia where we finally docked. Our ship broke its mooring and floated out, then bumped into the Costa Magica behind us. We stayed two and a half days in LaSpazia and missed Livorno. We arrived very late back to Civitevecchia... Most folks were missing their flights. If you booked your air with Celebrity, which we did, they took us to a hotel, fed us and rebooked our flights. I don't think its a big vs small thing.. The Costa ship was just as stuck as we were. A real squall. So much damage occurred in the little town we had seen the day or two before, Portofino, Santa Margharitta, and Rapallo. BTW Aruba 76 we are in Holliston too!

  4. In 2016 we were on a Celebrity T/A that made a port call in Toulon. With some folks on our roll call we had a 8hr tour of Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Cassis. We enjoyed both Aix and Cassis and I don't think you will regret

whatever choice you make. If you can go see one, both or all 3! :D

Thanks all! We finally decided to book the ship tour to Cassis.. appreciate the input.

  5. We will be in Toulon late in October... would anyone recommend Cassis or Aix as a better excursion ...we are on Celebrity if that makes any difference.

  6. Hello All,

I'm trying to make plans for a DIY excursion out of Toulon either to Aix En Provence via a shared car transfer service or to Hyeres and Bormmes les Mimosas via train and taxi.

Does anyone know at which of the two available locations the Celebrity Constellation docks in Toulon?

And, if anyone has better suggestions for a day of France charm and scenic beauty, please let me know.

    Thank you,

    Marilyn

Marilyn, we are trying to figure this port out too! We are on your cruise. Interested if you find anything good![emoji3] sue

  7. We are looking at a ships shore excursion to Vejer de la Frontera aka White Villages and countryside. Has anyone done this? Or we could just walk around Cádiz? Or Cadiz and Flamenco?? Trying to decide so any input would be helpful! Thanks !

  8. ;)

I chose the train option for our August visit to Florence (also on the Constellation), mostly because it gave you more time in town (think it's 5 hours). The train station is approx. 1/2 mile from the sites in downtown Florence, so a 15/20 minute walk....

Thanks for the feedback! Did you meet back at the train station for,the return?

  9. VacationLove15...

We did exactly what you're planning. Just got back last month. Caught the redeye and spent 3 days in Rome prior to an Eastern Mediterranean cruise.

I agree with flying in early. We came in 3 days early. I would even try 4 or 5 days if I had it to do over again. There is a ton to do in Rome and The Vatican. Great city.

I agree with Harrijc --- and recommend staying in the city center. I would disagree with a stay near the airport, unless like The Wood Duck, it's short after-cruise stay. My suggestion is to stay within a couple of blocks of the Pantheon where you can easily walk to most of the sites. If you do stay near the airport it gives you a perfect opportunity to explore Ostia Antica (5-10 minutes away).

I disagree with taking a nap unless nightlife is what you're in to in which case a nap makes sense. Personally, we find the best way to get on local time is to stay up and don't nap. We can't keep our eyes open past 8:30 pm, sleep really well, and wake up around 5:30 - 6:00 am. Sun is already up, but hardly any people yet. It's a great time to explore several popular outdoor sites on your own and then enjoy breakfast.

Here's my entire very detailed review of our pre-cruise preparations, and our ports, including our stay in Rome: http://www.lavasurfer.com/info/eastern-mediterranean.html

Regardless whatever you decide about any of the above, you should still have a good time. Enjoy your cruise.

Wow, I read most of your website! What a jewel! You certainly did a great job describing things! We are sailing on Celebrity Constellation in October. We had previously visited the Greek ports on another Princess cruise. I enjoyed reliving some of our excursions by your descriptions. We have arranged a VIP tour of Rome as part of our transfer from the airport. I figured if we got going right away we could stay awake! So we hope to check in when the tour is over. We are only staying one night. We have arranged to share a transfer to the ship with two other couples we connected with on CC. BTW you listed a meet and greet anda connections party. Were those two separate events? What did you do in Malaga? Thanks again!

  10. WE are booked on the Constellation for the Oct. 19th sailing of Spain, Italy and France. So many of the tours are listed as strenuous. Our little group has a mix of abilities. Can you be more specific in the distance from the buses in Florence and some of the other ports? It would be great to get a first hand account from someone who has done it too. And will we be in Toulon or Su Mer?

  11. We are flying in the day before and have hired Stefanos Cab for transfer to Rome with a 2 hour VIP tour. We arrive early so we figured we would just start touring! We have booked Hotel Navona near Piazza Navona. Seems like a good location and great price. Then we will be taken to the hotel and check in... leaving the next day on Stefanos transfer to Civi . We are sharing the transfer with two other couples we met on our roll call.

  12. We enjoyed our Joe Bananas tour of Amalfi and Pompeii. Our driver advised we start at the furthest post along the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento and Positano and see Pompeii on the way back. Worked beautifully! Great company!
