  1. I'm glad to hear we don't have to take life jacket with us to the muster station.  Not having to go back to the cabin when it's over will spread everyone out and not all be on the stairs or elevators!

  2. Hello fellow cruisers! We will be on the Regal sailing March 19, 2017. My husband and I will be traveling with my 25 year old daughter and her boyfriend. We are looking for 6 people who would like to join us on a tour at Amber Cover: The VIP ALL INCLUSIVE! EAT DRINK & BE MERRY BEST OF PUERTO PLATA NOT JUST ANOTHER CITY TOUR offered through Iguana Mama Tour Company. Adults are $70 per person. This tour and the company had great reviews on Trip Advisor. The tour only runs on Tuesdays with a minimum of 10 people. We will be in Amber Cove on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Check out the link and let me know if you are interested.

We are going to take this tour Feb 7th 2017 so hopefully I will have news for you before you go!

  3. We did an island tour in a small, modern air conditioned bus with Pereira Tours. We don't bother with ship excursions, particularly in the Caribbean where they are so easy to arrange with a local operator or pick up one at the port.

How was your tour? We are booked with Liz for February. Did you go back to the ship or down to one of the South Frigate Beach areas? We would like to eat at a beach bar but aren't into sitting on the beach for hours. She is recommending Spice Mill Grill at Cockleshell Beach.

  4. Since the ship docks it would be easy to walk around and see what is available but having a quiet day to explore on the ship would be great too.

Look at the Amber Cove port link here on CC. Haven't been yet (Feb 2017) but we signed up for a tour with a local company that many people recommended since we are not folks to just sit at the pool. Its 5 hours and will give us an overview of this area of the DR.

  5. Have you learned a good technique to relieve your swollen ankles? If so, please share. :-)

Had the ship's doctor at our table on HAL. He said put your life jacket under the mattress at the foot of your bed to raise it up and help the swollen ankles.

  6. When storing a suitcase (other than a duffle) under your bed you can save a couple of inches by leaving it open. It also becomes a good place to store things you hope not to need, like rain ponchos, things you may not need often, like snorkel equipment, and/or dirty clothes.

Terrific!! Have cruised a bit and always use under the bed for the suitcases but leaving them open for extra storage is a great idea! Thanks

  7. We were on a tour to China that included 4 night cruise. It was lovely...do be up on deck after dark...many towns along the river are brightly lit as you go by. Only thing we didn't like were the beds. It was like box springs without mattresses...very hard especially if you sleep on your side.

  8. cruisin'kathy: The taxis that run tours are based at the cruise ship docks or town. The taxis out of the ferry dock basically want to take you to town or the airport.

Thanks. Another question...Princess is offering transportation to St John right from the dock but it includes a 2 hour tour for about what it would cost to do it on our own. I think it may be new since no one has mentioned it yet. We aren't folks who lay on the beach so do you think that would be enough to get a feel for St John? We would definitely have time for a tour around St Thomas then. Thanks

  9. We rented a car when we were there in 2005 so we could see more than ship tours would allow. We had trouble finding things even though I had reseached and gotten a map beforehand. Many of the streets do not have street signs. We did see some interesting neighborhoods when we were lost. I will also tell you that the Nature park at the tip of the island was NOT worth the trip or the $$. We also were bitten badly by no-seeum's while we were paying. The "snack bar" is NOT a place we wanted to eat, and we didn't find anything else until we got back to the main shopping areas.

We did enjoy the Hato Cave Tour but if we had it to do again we would go to the end of the pier and get a taxi/van and take that tour. Some of our table mates did it that way and paid less than we did and were able to really look at things as they went. The view from the top of the bridge is spectacular! I want to return and see more of the neighborhoods in the Old Town. The little we saw there were so colorful.
