We went from midtown (near Macy's) to Red Hook at Christmas last year. I stepped out of the hotel around 8:30 or 9:00 AM and noticed that there were few unoccupied taxis available so I decided that my best bet would be to schedule a Dial 7 car.
Of course at 10:30 or 11:00 AM there were plenty of cabs available since rush hour was over, and I had to tell a couple of cab drivers that I didn't need a cab.
You should be fine just hailing a cab, especially from a hotel with a doorman. Dial 7 was a good experience but it cost more than a cab would have (I recall $60, where a cab back to Penn Station after the cruise was on the order of $30).
Most or all cabs have a GPS; give them the address 72 Bowne Street in Brooklyn and that will get you to the entrance of the terminal.
Many thanks , great advice. Just one more question, is the toll for the tunnel included in the cost of the taxi?
Again, thank you Janet

Thanks to both cruisers whom responded to my query. I found the replies very informative.
Yes, ESSEX HOUSE is a fine hotel. We stayed there in 2014, such a lovely location. On that occasion, we were sailing with CELEBRITY ECLIPSE (Manhattan cruise terminal) I believe the taxi cost was something like 30 dollars.

Regarding - December 8th Transatlantic cruise back to the UK (QM2 from Brooklyn Cruise Terminal)
I wondered if someone could offer me some advice regarding our journey starting from ESSEX HOUSE HOTEL, Central park to the Brooklyn cruise terminal. Perhaps there is someone who lives in NY or is familiar with NY transportation who could kindly offer a little advice. I know that it won't be a short taxi ride and won't be cheap which is why I am asking. What sort of cost should we expect.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance

You are most welcome. I hope you have a very enjoyable two way crossing. Just like the old days of grand crossings - I am old enough to remember the original Queen Mary, sadly not as a passenger but from my Father working on her and other Cunard ships. As a wee boy I was allowed on when they docked back in Southampton to gaze in awe at what to my eyes was the ultimate in opulence.
Awesome memories John, how privileged you were . I am trying to remember when we sailed out of Southampton a few years back Q Elizabeth, Q Mary and Q Victoria were docked together. That was a real treat watching from the deck of our ship before sailaway ...would that be 2010?

The Silhouette is down to leave Pier 101 which is served by the City Cruise Terminal, which is where she leaves from a few months earlier for my next jaunt.
As ever schedules can change so it is probably best to check your final documents. Good grief I sound like an ultra conservative lawyer. The list of cruise ships leaving Southampton is maintained in several places. The following link is the for the site I tend to use.
Thanks John, you have been most helpful. I will do as you suggest regarding checking my final documents.
The reason I am rather early with my request is we are in the middle of hiring a car for our journey down to Southampton (2nd Nov, staying in hotel overnight , already booked) .The car hire will pick up car from hotel the same night. When we arrive back on the 15th December, they need to know which terminal to leave the car we will use to take us home on our return . We decided against leaving our own car in car park for 6 weeks or train journey.

To save you reposting QM2 is due to dock at Pier 46 which is served by the Ocean Cruise Terminal.
Thank you very much John, I did realize my mistake as soon as I had posted it but didn't know how to delete it:o. I have already re-posted same message on the Cunard forum but you have given me the answer I need which is most helpful, much appreciated.
Perhaps you can help me further...I will be sailing on the 16 night Eastbound Transatlantic Crossing Cruise SILOUETTE November 3rd 2018 and need to know which terminal the ship will sail from. I have been researching but couldn't find any info regarding this.

Does anyone know which terminal Queen Mary will return to 15.12.18 at the end of the transatlantic eastbound cruise from New York.

We used the train from Huddersfield to Southampton when we were flying back from Montreal, so didn’t want our car in Southampton.
If you book 12 weeks before hand you can get a decent price reduction. We also bought a 2 together Rail Card. The total price for both of us should have £256. Our one way single ticket cost £110, which included the rail card purchase. We flew via Manchester so we didn’t have to change trains in London.
Worth looking in to, thank you.

OP. The 8th December is the sailing date from NY, you will be in Southampton on the 15th December!
Only 10 days to sort Christmas out!
Silly me! you are correct...we set sail from NY on the 8th arriving back in Southampton on the 15th.

Just looked on National Rail . There is a direct train both ways York to Southampton. ( can’t do exact dates yet) . On the Friday leave 1035, are 1517 (night in Southampton), return on the Saturday 0947, are 1440. About £100 ea return, just over 4 1/2 hrs each way.

Simon, sounds like a very good alternitive, thank you for the info. We will stay in hotel as we are so far away.
Many thanks Janet

Thank you to everyone who has replied regarding our parking up while away. Never having done this before it's pretty daunting and we don't want to make wrong choices. We are coming from York, when we have cruised in the past it's only been at most 16 days.

We used Parking4Cruises and found them very efficient. We too left from one berth and returned to another.
That sounds perfect...one more question, do they bring the car to you on return?
-
Try http://westquaycars.com/ and http://www.smithsairportcars.co.uk/ . Both used and recommended a lot by CCer's.
Simon
Sorry Simon, I didn't make myself clear, I require car parking for 6 weeks not car hire but thanks for your help.

Hi Simon, thanks, will look into both recommendations.

Hi, does anyone know of a reliable meet and greet car parking service that caters for 2 ports. (We would like to park our own car for 6 weeks while away) We are sailing outbound to Florida on Silhouette 03/11/18 and returning 08.12.18 on Queen Mary both Southampton but different docks. Any information would be appreciated.

Many thanks for info as I know some companies object to taking alcohol on board, just wasn't sure which one.
