  1. Just off the Jewel where my husband and I each received an OBC (refundable) on our account without any explanation. In speaking to others on board, we were told that it was a refund for a changed itinerary (Kauai instead of Kona). It was more than I thought these fees would be - $80/per person. Maybe it’s because the canceled port would have required tendering, which I assume is more costly.

  2. My guess the game would be about 4:30 P.M. if there is a satellite feed in the middle of the ocean. If it is shown (check your Freestyle Daily}, it would be shown in O"Sheehan's mid ship Deck 8 and possibly on the big screen in the Atrium.

Thanks - I think you were the person who started our Roll Call. Sorry you won't be sailing with us.

  3. I asked this question on another thread, but it's now buried, so here I go again.

We will be on the Jewel next week, Vancouver to Honolulu. I understand that the ship typically carries the NFL Thursday night game. We will be somewhere in the Pacific on Thursday 10/5 when the Patriots play at 8:30 PM eastern time. Is the game shown in real time? I'm guessing we will be 3-4 hours behind, so the game would be shown in the afternoon. Is it shown on your cabin tv or just common areas - bars, casino, etc.?

I know that I shouldn't be worried about this on a cruise, but it will be the 2nd of 5 days at sea, so a few hours of football won't hurt.

    Thanks.

  4. We will be somewhere between Vancouver and Hawaii on Thursday, 10/5 on the Jewel. Will the NFL game be shown in real time? I figure it will be 4 hours behind Eastern time so the 8:30 PM game would be on at 4:30 in the afternoon.

I know, I know, we're on a cruise and shouldn't be watching football, but it is the Patriots 😍

  5. We will be boarding the NCL Jewel in a little over 1 week in route to Hawaii! Very excited. What worries me is 2 things.

First one being minor- as I hear the waters during a trans Pacific can be very rough. Have any others experienced this crossing and describe the sea conditions?

Second one is with the whole situation with the US and North Korea at the moment and their crazy president shooting missles into the Pacific. Who knows if he will try to shoot a longer range one close to Hawaii.Ugh! Can't we just have world peace?

We are on the same cruise - have you joined the Roll Call? Please join us - we'll calm each other's nerves.

  6. Thanks. I thought that would be the case. Just wanted to pack accordingly since we plan to use the laundering to allow is to pack less. We'll be staying in Honolulu 4 days post cruise so it will be nice to have some freshly laundered clothes for Part II of our vacation.

  7. If there is still time, join your Roll Call - you can usually "meet" others

who would enjoy getting together for dinner. Also attend the M & G if one is scheduled. On our upcoming cruise, one poster reserved a table for 8 in one of the Main Dining Rooms for the first night and invited anyone interested to join them.

  8. Excellent preview! I just added motion sickness pills to my list....have never needed them but just in case[emoji846]I'm on the Oct 3rd cruise with you...I'm also happy to hear about the coffee maker in the room!

Don't remember if this was in the Vlog, but there are only coffee makers in balcony cabins and higher - suites have a fancier coffee maker.

  9. We have a similar situation, although with more notice, on our Vancouver to Honolulu cruise on the Jewel. We were informed 3 weeks before sailing that the ship would not visit Kona due to the Ironman Triathlon - obviously an event that takes much more than 3 weeks to plan. They are substituting it with a stop in Kauai - not a bad replacement, but I am certainly glad the excursion I had booked for Kona was refundable.

  10. We were worried about the same thing, but he was waiting just inside the building with a sign that said Mary Lou's Big Island Tours. He then walked with us out the front to where he'd parked the van. He's a very nice guy! I believe we met him at the pier around 8am. We had no problems with any delays getting off the ship - actually it's one of the things I like the most about NCL POA, how easy it is going to and from the ship. The only time I had to queue was coming back from Kona.

Because my mother is in the wheelchair he was great about helping me unpack it and making sure she was okay and had plenty to drink. He even stopped at a fruit market on the way back to the ship to buy her some guavas. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Thanks so much, you've certainly eased my mind. We are not on the POA - the Jewel is doing a repositioning cruise from Alaska to the South Pacific and Australia and we are on the leg from Vancouver to Honolulu with stops in Hilo, Kauai and Maui (overnight). We've been planning this trip for almost a year and finally board 3 weeks from tomorrow.

  11. I leave this Saturday on The Jewel. However I know the following officers:

    Captain: Kenneth Harstorm

    Hotel Director: Steven Jacobsen

Food and Beverage Director: Mohammad Hasan

    Restaurant Manager: Noel Chaves

I hope this helps. Have no idea about the Cruise Director.

    Mandy

    Thanks Mandy

I think you were originally on our sailing - you started the Roll Call. I'm now organizing the M & G. I like to know the names in advance, so hopefully I can remember them.

Take good care of her for us.

  12. We will be debarking our cruise in Honolulu, and then need to get to the airport to pick up a rental car. Are there shuttles available like at the other ports? If not, what are our transportation options? Are the Rental Car Pick-Up counters at he airport or off-site?

    Thanks

  13. I would never try to do that to someone else and I would probably be upset if someone did it to me (note: not because of losing any perceived perks! LOL) because I do enjoy it. Not to mention, that's just plain rude!

He actually claimed that he wanted to organize for a group of French Speaking passengers who were not on the Roll Call and thought it would be fine to have a bilingual M & G (our cruise originates in Vancouver, so there are quite a few Canadians). When he contacted the Coordinator, she advised him that the M & G would be on the first sea day, which is customary. I subsequently contacted her to say that he was not representing the group and fortunately, our itinerary starts with 5 sea days on our way to Hawaii, so she scheduled another M & G for the second Sea day. As I said before, not only hasn't he posted in over a month, but she hasn't heard from him since the initial contact. I hope he has courtesy to contact her if he plans to cancel.

  14. Don't assume the "panic" comes from fearing a loss of VIP treatment. I have often coordinated M&Gs and I do encourage people to attend because as the coordinator, it's embarrassing when the officers outnumber the CC members in attendance. I'm cognizant that these officers are busy people and they take time out to come talk to us so I always hope for good attendance. I don't coordinate for perks and I never expect them so I have no fear of losing them.

I totally agree. It's beyond disappointing when people on your Roll Call don't attend the Meet & Greet. I take on the responsibility because like many of you, I'm retired and did a lot of organizing of special events in my professional life as a Director of Volunteer Services. What I wish folks would remember is that the organizer is the only one known to the Coordinator onboard - everyone else can chose to attend or not and remain anonymous. It's embarrassing when so many members of Senior Staff attend and people don't respect their time or effort.

As far as the perks, in my 3 previous times as organizer, I received suite perks the one sailing when we weren't already in a suite. Sailing in a balcony this time, so I'll see what happens. Either way, I'm good.

One interesting note is that another member of our Roll Call did attempt to hijack the coordination of the M & G, contacting the coordinator before I did, claiming he was trying to help. Other members of the Roll Call jumped all over him. He's since disappeared from the Roll Call.

  15. It really is in bad taste to remove food from a dining venue. In any hospitality setting there are certain areas for certain things. Dining rooms and buffets are for food, hallways are for getting from one to another, pool decks are pool activities, and so on. You would not walk yourself down an inside hallway if you were soaking wet from the pool. Water belongs around the pool or in your shower. The same goes for food. A hallway is not a place to carry food through. The smell is one thing, the possible spillage is another and then there is the safety factor. Rough seas are part of cruising and I am sure that more than a few people have spilled something hot onto themselves or others, not to mention a slippery spill on a tiles surface somewhere. If any food is to be eaten in a stateroom it should be delivered. Proper etiquette in a "real or proper" hospitality setting dictates that food stay where it is eaten.

Now have I taken food from the buffet? Yes one time when my wife was sick, I brought her a sandwich. After that time I always order room service, that is what it is there for.

I guess they need to eliminate the pool side barbecue since pool decks are for pool activities...

  16. Fairly typical on both small and large boats.

On the Jewel they typically do outdoor deck themes a few times (just outside the indoor buffet area) about every 2-3 days. The indoor themes are more subtle than some of the other cruise-lines. If you don't like the buffets, there's free restaurants.

Thanks for the info. We are veteran NCL cruisers and will be dining in Specialty restaurants 6 out of the 10 nights we are on the ship (2 for our Platinum Status, 4 for Dining Plan). Just trying to explore the options for our other meals onboard.
