Were there much of a queue after boarding commences? How long did it take for you to be onboard after that?

Travelling on Grand Princess at the end of the month as a first time cruiser, when should we arrive at the port and when does check in open? These details were left out on our itinerary. If we want to avoid the queue as much as possible is it better to arrive earlier or later? If we are onboard say around 1pm would we be able to have (free) lunch onboard? Thanks in advance.
