At the 80 day mark or so go your my ncl account and check the various banners to see if you have the let's get you upgraded banner also in you my ncl account at the 79 or 80 day mark it will be with your other ncl emails. If you booked through a travel agent do they send you a bid request or the travel agent

I called NCL today, yes you do need it and they take care of it . 

I am doing the Sun to Cuba also, I have these same questions. I did read in about post that you need to call to make reservations since the system does not pick up the credit. 

I have read that many people like the Sun and said the refurbishing was really nice. I will keep peeps here for the answers.

Other than privacy, was there any other issues , it looks to be a large room.

My son took his on the Liberty last summer and it worked fine. Better to have them in the cabin playing games than running in the hall...
