  1. You can use the Viking Travel Consultant to sort out the cruises/options and do the initial booking. Any time thereafter, prior to final payment, you can have a travel agent take over the booking to pass on whatever perks they may offer. I’m told it does not change the way either of the parties is compensated.

  2. There was a long discussion about discounting and Viking's new policy a couple of months back. I tried to find the thread to share the link but no luck. But yes, Viking no longer allows TAs to discount.

Interesting - thanks for looking for the thread; I'll try searching also.

  3. Not sure where it all will go, as we have experienced some of the same problems, particularly on the longer cruises which well-traveled passengers tend to frequent. Although the Elite status was originally intended to reward very experienced, long term cruisers - measured by total cruise days, over the years the rules were relaxed to make it much easier to achieve by allowing a one day cruise to count as much as a transatlantic with respect to,cruise counts. Now, in theory, especially on the west coast, using a number of short cruises booked in a suite, can result in Elite status with relatively few actual days at sea. If and when they decide to create a higher public level, I hope that it will be much harder to achieve.

  4. As mentioned in several posts, the approach varies a lot between cruise lines. If important, and it probably should be because it often reflects the overall atmosphere of the cruise line, just ask on the forum dedicated to the cruise li e of interest.

  5. Trouble with using phone is you have to pick it up and look at it. OPsaid he wanted something that would stay lit that he could glance at. He didn't want to risk waking others or knocking clock/phone off nightstand. Hence using a travel clock with battery back light I think is a better choice.

Download "the clock" for your iPhone. Works great!

  6. Really doesn't matter a lot because if you book with the cruise line and find a better deal through a TA, that TA can transfer the booking to them any time before final payment. One TA can even take over a booking from another TA. I have also been told by a cruise consultant at a certain cruise line that it didn't matter to him one way or the other. A good TA can do a lot for you at times that no one at the cruise line will offer.

  7. Frequent Flyers (FT Forum) along with most of our regular locals here on CC like, use & recommend either Dial 7 or Carmel, they are 2 of the largest fleet in the metro NYC area, computerized dispatch and competitive rates. We use Carmel on a regular basis for airport & home port transportation, regular 4 door sedan or minivan as appropriate - both have free mobile APP (iOS & Android) to request, confirm & get status update when vehicle is dispatch/en route and about to arrive - works just like those Uber & Lyft "ride-sharing" map.

That is exactly the kind of information I was looking for - many thanks. I think we will try Carmel!

  8. I would likely complete any survey that I thought would likely benefit me with respect to future benefits/offerings. However, there are two types I generally do not complete - a) surveys which do not allow me to omit (Or respond N/A) to a question and b) surveys that require narrative answers.

  9. A friend recently asked me about river cruising for those who need a scooter to use for walking tours /excursions. He would use a walker on the ship, so is not completely scooter-bound, but feels like longer distances would be a problem. Anyone have first-hand experience in this area?

  10. I even went to guest services to make sure that it would be fine to use. They explained that they just don't want those big heavy utility extension cords period and especially the ones with the surge protectors. The small plug in strips like Belkin are just fine to use. I cruise frequently on Princess, Celebrity, and occasionally on Royal Caribbean and have had no problems at all using this. In fact, my DH carries a couple of these in his back pack, along with lap top and cell phone and batteries upon boarding the ship-- absolutely no problem at all.

I think a few above posters may be misinterpreting what Princess is saying? and no, I too am not ignorant!

I agree with you ! Although the Carnival web site specifically prohibits extension cords with surge protection, no such item is found in The Princess prohibited list. So as I said earlier , I will plan to use my Belkin unless specifically prohibited.

P.S. - The USCG document quoted several times earlier is strictly advisory and specifically says it is not mandatory.
