    Welcome back, T. 🙂

    Long time no see.

Correction -  long time no sea. 😏

    JB 🙂

Fleeting visit I think, JB, but nice to be remembered. Think I lost the Cruise Critic habit but still happy to help where I can. We have done a few cruises since I was last here, but not so many. We've got one coming up soon from your neck of the woods. The attraction was thhat it sails in and out of Liverpool, so I can experience it for myself. 🙂

  2. Looking for a Beatles tour for 9 people.....any suggestions?

As you’ll read above I try not to recommend tours I haven’t been on myself and I have no connection with any tour company. So I searched online and this one looked interesting to me.

It seems to have a connection with the Cavern Club, so might be worth a look. Maybe others, like phabric, have personal experience? 😊

  3. I'm definitely a "visit the surrounding countryside" type of person. I'm hoping someone can suggest a 4-5 hour excursion from Liverpool where we'd see great gardens or stunning scenery or historic castles, that sort of thing. Just less interested in towns and cities (unless they're truly exceptional, Paris, etc.) and have zero interest in shopping.

Many thanks — and what a dandy website.

Given your time constraints there I think a visit to Speke Hall would be right up your street. Only 30 minutes (tops) from the cruise terminal and as packed full of history and gardens as you could need. We’ve taken several American friends there and all loved it. Also not too far from the ship so not much time lost in travelling. All the info you need can be found here:

    Enjoy your visit!

  4. We will be on the RSSC stopping in Holyhead. I am having trouble figuring out what to do in this port. In searching the web for ideas I came across the Snowdon Railway. We did the Flam railroad trip in Norway and the scenery was amazing, so thinking perhaps this might be worth a try. Has anyone done this and if so how did you get from the port to the national park? Any advice on this matter or this port in general would be greatly appreciated. The only I don't want to do is be on a RSSC motor coach tour. Thanks in advance!

I live in North Wales and quite honestly you are spoilt for choice. The place has everything. Granted, there isn’t much at Holyhead itself, but the island of Anglesey is crammed with interesting stuff and just across on the mainland you have even more. I’ve done the Snowdon railway and it’s a great trip. Advance booking is essential, but beware that it is occasionally cancelled due to the weather and it’s not much of a trip if there’s low cloud on the mountains. Public transport is notoriously poor in rural North Wales, so you will need to think about that. If you’re in a group you might want to split the cost of a driver for the day and take in as much as possible. If you’re adventurous you could hire a car. That would actually be my own preferred choice and I’d drive around the island, taking in the sights and attractions. Wales is a wonderful place (I’m English) and the people are incredibly friendly.

  5. Hi towncar: Is Liverpool known for High Tea? If it is, would you be able to recommend a few that are affordable near the cruise port. thanks!

Just a further note. I’m not sure what your budget is but if you can stretch to £22 per head or £33 for the luxury option then the views from Panoramic 34 are well worth it. Easy walking distance from the cruise terminal (5-10 minutes max).

I’ve eaten here a few times. It’s high end, with the very best views over the city and surrounding area. I’d advise booking in advance though.

Here’s the menu. Just click the link for afternoon tea.

As always, can I stress that I have no connection with this establishment and it’s just my personal opinion. But that’s what you asked for!

  6. As an extension to Morkie’s question, here’s an interesting little article for anyone that might be looking for a slightly more quirky dining experience in Liverpool. Two of my personal favourites from this list are Rococo’s and Leaf, but I’m sure they are all good. A few of the places are out of the city centre though so just be careful. If in doubt, ask and I’ll tell you how far out they are 😊

Lots of great places to choose from. Here’s a useful article from the local newspaper. I can’t say I’ve actually visited any of these places for afternoon tea, but it’s hard to go wrong with cake and sandwiches.:)

  8. I took www.pooloflifetours.com Beatle tour. They met us at the dock. We had a van of 6 filled from our Roll Call. We would get out at a few stops with not much walking. We stopped at all the Beatle's homes. The guide had many pictures/stories to tell and of course Beatle music. He also pointed out places as we passed.

From our Roll Call, there was a van that just wanted a Liverpool tour from the same tour company.

Everyone in our group highly recommended it.

    Great tip there 😊

  9. Regarding the Beatles Tour. We went with Fab4 taxi tour. My husband is still talking about the tour. We booked with a couple we did not know from our Princess roll call from Canada and they were as excited as we were. We loved, loved, loved it. Great price and tons of history. You will not be disappointed.

That sounds like a great recommendation :)

  10. I have not read all the pages here, but I hope you can help. We will be visiting Liverpool on our Royal BI cruise in August. I am looking for a 4-5 hour tour about the Beatles with some Liverpool history thrown in. Are there any tour companies that you recommend? No extensive walking, we are a little mobility impaired.

Hi. I don’t really recommend tours that I haven’t done myself, but I can’t say I’ve read many complaints about the many companies that offer such tours. I’m sure a simple Google search will give you lots of options, plus the recommendations from others on here 😊

  11. Hi Towncar

Completely understand about being busy, especially at the holidays. I wanted to thank you for all the helpful info (and all the others). We have had a mild change of plan. After reading about the Beatles in Liverpool and London, DH proclaimed he didn't need to go to Liverpool, the Beatles sites in London are more what he wants to see, so we have postponed Liverpool for another trip (which we will combine somehow with Paris). I will be paying attention to Travelcards and Opal cards to be sure I understand them both :)

    Happy New Year

I looked up the info on paying with a debit/credit card and it looks like a good way to go. Here’s a link to the official page and there are many other useful sites explaining it. Basically you just use your contactless card but the expenditure is capped so it never costs you more than a travel card and could be less. 😊

Happy new year to you too. Liverpool is easy to twin with a Paris trip. I have done that exact thing with two different sets of American friends. There are great air links between the two cities and the flight time isn’t much more than an hour. Feel free to pop back in here for some specific tips on both cities. Enjoy your London trip. It’s a fabulous city

Just as a P.S. to your London tube ticket dilemma, I was surprised to learn on a fairly recent trip to the capital that you can just pay by inserting your credit card in the machine at the start and finish of your journey. It worked for us. Maybe you can find out some more details on this and see if it will work for you? Just a thought

  13. I was going to ignore this but since you seem intent on being the thread police, I will.

Yes, I asked a question about Oyster vs Travelcard and going to Liverpool. Bob answered with "just to add to the confusion, there are 2For1 deals...". So not really an answer to the 2 questions I posted (and which still haven't been answered even by you). They were:

So, what is a National Rail station? (Waterloo, Euston, Kings Cross, ???) Can I use this card on London tube?

Is there a better link for Liverpool rail/tours?

After no response to these questions to this point, I gave up and then found this thread where amias has been very helpful.

Thanks for your helpful information, not so much the rest. For eample, insulting my intelligence (and others who read this) by saying "..it's easy to work out the maximum amount you may spend...". Very condescending too. Many of your countrymen and women manage to answer these questions with much more grace and patience.

As I posted on the other thread, I'm sorry to ask all these questions but locals understand the system a lot better than US Tourists.

No need to reply, I won't be back on this thread.

Sorry I'm late getting onto this. No excuses. Just been mad busy :(

Don't worry about it. Everyone's just trying to be helpful in their own way. Yes this thread's mainly about Liverpool, but what the heck? Come back any time you like and ask whatever you like. If we can help then we will, and if not, we'll try and direct you to somewhere that you can get your information. That goes for everyone. :):):)

  14. Just popping back in to say thank you and I LOVE your city also! We had a beautiful day to tour the city. Once off the Sillouette ( Aug 17) , we got on a HOHO bus to get acclimated and circled back to the port area to take the Mersey Ferry tour - after that we went to the Liverpool Cathedral and climbed the tower for some wonderful views; then back down to the waterfront hoping to get to the Beatles Story, but the line was too long by then. We did walk thru the "mall" area, caught sight of some beautiful sailing vessels that are in a race around the world, went into a quaint little "Quartermasters" house that has been restored and then the Liverpool Museum. We had a fabulous day, but not enough time leaving us wanting more. This is one place we would definitely like to spend more time in!

Great to hear of another satisfied visitor to our city. Hope we get the pleasure of your company again. 😊
