  1. Cool! You've got wheels! The area around Anchorage is very easy to navigate. The place I'm going to point you to would be a great side stop if you go north out of town. The Eagle River Nature Center in the Chugach State Park. It's about 11-12 miles off of the Glenn Highway and a very scenic drive. From the Glenn Highway exit off at Eagle River Loop Road. Continue on to the red light at the intersection of Eagle River Road and take a right. (There's a Walmart Supercenter on the corner if you need anything.) It's 11 miles from that turn until you dead-end into the parking lot of the Nature Center. There are some level and easy walking trails that will take you out to several platforms overlooking the Eagle River. The scenery is pretty spectacular and it only cost a few bucks to park at the Nature Center. The Nature Center was closed when we were there so I have no idea what's inside the building... Depending on how much time you spend walking some of the trails this whole side trip should only take a couple hours. Well worth the short drive! Below are a few pics I took last May. You're going to love Alaska! Good luck!

  2. Within walking distance of your ship:

    * interesting collection of boutique shops and restaurants in red "barns"

    * Yokohama Tower for scenic panoramic views

    * doll museum

    * noodle museum

    * historic trans Pacific ship, permanently moored

    * sizeable Chinatown

    * Motomatchi - main shopping area

    * government building housing Governor's offices - rooftop garden open to public

    *public gardens along the sea front

    * art gallery with good collection of Ukiyoe -traditional woodblock prints

    * McDonalds - don't laugh - many countries have a specialty item available nowhere else and the Japanese shrimp burger is well worth a

    try.

    Great information, thanks for sharing.

  3. How could I forget the SS Veracruz? I have a story to beat all stories. I believe it was the late 70s/early 80s. I was a young lady traveling with my mom. We flew from NYC to Florida to catch the ship bound for Key West, Cancun and Cozumel. Our plane was delayed. We arrived in Florida and there was transport provided to the ship. I recall about 20 passengers including a lady who may have been the Cruise Director or some other ship crew member was with us. She radioed the ship to inform them that we were late. The ship informed her that there was a storm coming and they needed to leave port. Oh no! Leave us behind? But, no. Even better. The ship anchored in Tampa Bay. We were transported by bus to a dock where we were loaded onto a tugboat. Mind you, it was winter so we all had coats on and all our luggage. So, we're on this tug and it takes us up to the side of the Veracruz and they throw a rope ladder out the side and yes, Folks, we had to climb up the rope ladder into the ship. My mom was terrified. Of course, I thought it was hilarious! The crew were very helpful. The funniest thing is that everyone on the ship was having dinner at this point and were oblivious to what was happening. It was quite an unbelievable story (aka, nobody believed us). Anyway, we received an apology but no compensation for our "hardship." I think it would have been a different story if this were to happen today!!! In the end, we had a great time on the cruise. I remember a lot of fun Jamaican crew members [emoji4] The ports of call were quite different from what they are today-much less developed! I loved traveling with my mom, who passed away several years ago. I will always have this hysterical "I Love Lucy" to tell and to cherish. If anyone else was on the same adventure, I'd love to hear about your memory of that night!!!

  4. Thanks Goldie.

    Mobility is not an issue as much as time constraints. Just concerned that the bus may take as long as the walk would as well as if there would be any issues using USD to pay the fare.......

    Than I would walk out and back from Ogden Point. It's very close. You will see lot of cruisers head out to the left of port. First stop will be Fishermen wraft, than along the water soon will be the Fairmont Empress hotel. Along the road in front of the hotel is Government Street and will take you to Chinatown. Reverse back to port.

  5. Yes, there were 952 category fare changes in 88 itineraries!

    It's going to take me awhile to sort through it all, but here's what changed generally, looking at Cat H only.

    Explorer had 21 itineraries with increases.

    Voyager had 17 itineraries with changes, 4 increases, 13 decreases.

    Mariner had 21 itineraries with changes, 3 increases, 18 decreases.

    Navigator had 11 itineraries with changes, 9 increases, 2 decreases.

    The biggest decreases:

    35%: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/NAV170523/summary/default.aspx (* This actually went up $100 this time)

    13%: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/NAV171017/summary/default.aspx

    15%: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/MAR180105/summary/default.aspx

    10%: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/MAR180123/summary/default.aspx

    20%: http://www.rssc.com/cruises/MAR180213/summary/default.aspx

    * In all cases, I track the increase or decrease from the original fares - so some might have went up this go around, but were still less than the original fare, or they went down, but were still more than the original fare.

  6. It may have little to do with cruising .... I've had this:

    BPPV IS THE MOST COMMON VESTIBULAR DISORDER.

    Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo,

    a false sensation of spinning.

    • Benign – it is not life-threatening
    • Paroxysmal – it comes in sudden, brief spells
    • Positional – it gets triggered by certain head positions or movements
    • Vertigo – a false sense of rotational movement

    • Go see your Doctor

    Interesting post. My brother suffered may have this diagnosis.
