  1. We missed an AC flight from YYZ to FLL in 2018? due to the EXTREMELY slow customs & immigration (the same day flight due to my other family’s schedule).  Fortunately, we did manage to get on the flight as they were waiting for quite a few more connecting flight passengers who were also stuck at C&I behind us.  I decided to get a Nexus card and switched the airport to YTZ when possible.

Our experience at EWR is much favourable than that of David, Mississauga. The first time, we literally walked though the C&I at EWR.  One time we had a big Asian tour group, but took a few minutes longer.  The last one in Dec., 2021, I had a problem with Nexus as the Nexus machine would not read it (the beginner user).  As it turned out, it was an ESTA issue and there was a huge line up at “non American section” as nobody with ESTA would be cleared.  I was told that this was a country wide issue.  An agent took me to the line for Americans and I was cleared “manually.

Pros for us, who live “walking distance without luggage” to YTZ

Don’t have to get up before sunrise to take an early flight out of YYZ.   We usually take a 10 or 11 am Porter flight so we get up at the normal time and have afternoon for sightseeing at NJ/NY.

Even comparing with UP Express, it is faster and cheaper to get to the airport from downtown.

    Cons for P/R

You cannot check in online for Porter.  Online check in is only for Canadian and American.  Annoying but no problem at the check in counter so far.

We go out of YTZ using Porter to EWR for cruise now as our small grandkids like Anthem for indoor activities.

The first time I used the Nexus at YYZs  , the Nexus section was not open and so many people were waiting outside.

We just completed the Octantis cruise from Milwaukee to Toronto (May 7 through May 14).  Don't expect any nice cruise terminals at any of the port stops.  Those that the ship could dock at were commercial dock with no passenger amenities. The only one that had a nice view, once you got past the immediate industrial docking area, was the skyline view of Toronto.

Though the weather was partly cloudy to mostly sunshine, the high winds and rough waves at several locations made us miss a stop or two and almost miss a third at Mackinac Island which was a tender port.  Temperatures were in the high 40's to upper 50's. A number of excursions depended on transportation to and from the shore on one of the ship's many Zodiacs. Several were cancelled at different locations due to the heavy sea (lake?) states.

The ship and crew were fantastic and it has the familiar Viking touch, but it has different "vibe" than the Viking Ocean ships. Viking has a few rough spots to work out as this new entry into their many cruising offerings settles in with some additional time in service.

Thank you Senior Gator for a review on Octantis experience.  (Sorry for the delay response).  I was wondering what was like to cruise through the lakes on ships much smaller than sea ships.  I will not be able to experience it any time soon as the fares are quite dear and 2022 cruises are sold out 😟/ 😊.  We, at Toronto shore, experienced more windy days this spring and were wondering how weather would affect the smaller ships.  Now I know.

Effinaround:  Your pictures are beautiful.  Obviously I could not get full size pictures of the ship  from the ground so they look great.

  3. Dear Ontarians:

Actual address of Port of Toronto is

    8 Unwin Ave, Toronto, ON M5A 3L1.
The rest of the 2022 schedule is below:

When she came in April, she docked for two days, but I could not go there.  Today, I managed to get there and took a couple of pictures (thru the chain link).  I also got one from across the lake.  Kind of neat to see the "cruise ships" especially such a pretty one on the Lake Ontario and at Toronto.  I never knew we had a cruise terminal until April !!!

Hopefully will be cruising April 22, Canadian Discovery with Viking. Looking for hotel recommendations for post stay in Toronto. TIA.

When I saw your post, I was so excited as I have been checking on the Viking Octantis past two weeks or so when I noticed a cruise ship on the lake (Toronto Harbour) during my walk.

So today, April 29th, 2022, Viking Octantis was supposed to arrive at the Port of Toronto at 8:30 am per port schedule.  I have been looking for it from my building  before 8 am.  As I read through the posts, I found out your post was a year old.  The Ship is not in the port yet, but finally visible by my eyes before 3 pm.

If you have taken this cruise last year, or know where I can find the Great Lakes cruise reviews, I would appreciate it if you point out where to go to read such reviews.

  5. WOW.

One.  Our Anthem was also 3 pm cut off originally (postponed to 5 pm) and I just could not do the same day, The last time we went to Florida for a cruise in 2018, we missed the AC flight  departure time due to an EXTREMELY slow immigration line.  Fortunately, AC was waiting for us as well as a quite few other connecting flight passengers. also stuck at the immigration.

Two.  You won $12,000?  I counted zeros to make sure, and that is USD right?  Congratulations.

Thank you for the review.  I noticed more and more are doing pre self testing on board.  We were also mentally prepared to drive back to Buffalo if one of us was positive and if RCL did not send us back on a jet.

I too was on this cruise with the wife, and when it started Omicron wasn’t that bad but as the cruise progressed it got so bad out there but on the ship we were kinda isolated and it felt safe to us. We drove down but parked at a hotel close to EWR for the cruise duration.

We too were on the fence of if we should go or not but going was the best decision for us as we really enjoyed it. We felt the safety measures in place were sufficient, and yes we did come across the bad apples who don’t wear masks properly and force themselves into elevators.

Coming home later that day the land border crossing was simple, we crossed at Landsdowne / 1000 Islands. We flew a couple months back and had green stickers already on our passports and we’re Nexus holders so we kinda expect it to be a breeze. Agent asked to see the PCR test result and I showed the Eurofins one on my phone. I didn’t print anything. Agent didn’t tell us to quarantine or take any additional test.

The only downside was that Royal charged my credit card in Canadian dollars when I specifically asked them during Check-In to charge in USD and let my bank convert it (Scotia Passport Visa has no 2.5% fx fee that’s why). Phone agent wasn’t that helpful and took and hour to convince them to give me a small refund for the error.

re Charges to CC:  I normally set my account as Cash (the trick I learned here in CC).  This time I did not have that choice.  Only way to secure the proper charge to my USD credit card (In the past RCL charged my USD CC a converted CAD equivalent amount at their favourate exchange rate, no matter how I instructed) is a visit to guest service last day and give them my USD card and ask for a paid receipt.  Often I get an argument that I do not have to do this, charges to C.C will be done automatically in Miami.  This time no argument.  They definitely had better GS staff and less line up.  Go when the GS is not busy.  Save an annoying hour to spend here in Canada for 15 minutes (this time much less) at the GS.

re green sticker:  I did not know you could keep it for the next time 😀  I took it off.  ☹️

Oh wow - sounds like you just made in in 2020. We were supposed to sail on Sunday, March 15th...but then the world fell apart.

Our teens have been fully vaxxed since the summer... waiting now to see when/if they will be eligible for the booster. Our younger kids have had their first doses earlier this month and are scheduled for their second at the end of January so we are ok with the rapid antigen tests for boarding.

Had a long chat with hubby about this cruise yesterday and we are still going to stick with the wait and see what develops over the next month. We agree it is not worth it to pay half the cruise fare on testing - especially when so many have reported that no one appears to actually look at those results when coming home. Hubby is hopeful the testing requirement will be dropped but I can't see that happening.

I'm perplexed as to why Canada is still requiring the PCR for entry - seems to me it's unsuccessful at stopping COVID from coming into the country. Omicron came from someone coming in who in theory had a negative PCR test result. It would be far less onerous in terms of expense, availability and time required for turnaround if we only needed a rapid antigen test which would likely be just as "effective" as the current requirements.

I really hate to disappoint the kids again. It's our last chance at a March Break cruise for our family as our eldest is off to university next fall and her break will no longer align with the rest of the kids.

Hard to believe it was little more than a month ago that we deposited and I thought I was so clever to "surprise" the kids with this trip as a Christmas gift (gave them a puzzle to put together on Christmas morning to figure it out). Things sure can change quick!

    IMG_2169.jpg

Wow...   what a great creative Christmas surprise.  I hope you will all enjoy the cruise in March. At least you will be all vaccinated to make things little simplier.

Yes, we did Feb 23-March 1 cruise last year.  I really wanted to cancel but everyone else said no problem.  I was glad we did go as not only we enjoyed the new ship (first on Anthem and Quantum class), I was the healthiest as we were laughing all week (better comedians).  Amazing that no one was coughing or sniffling all week.  We as a family went out to a nearby beach by taxi together each port. Nothing fancy.

TOCruisers, thanks for your review.  We also had one of the EWR hotels booked next to that mall.  Scary that masks aren't required.  Good to know for our rebook.  And annoying with the elevators on Anthem...people are so inconsiderate.  Things sound a bit stressful but glad things worked out. We are also from Toronto. Originally we had flights booked but cancelled and decided to drive (for Anthem cruise that didn't end up happening).  Did you feel safe at Newark side in the airport?  We were a bit worried of crowds at customs.

JillK, we are similar situation.  We also were on the Anthem Mar 15, 2020 cruise that didn't happen and are booked for this upcoming March break.  We were supposed to be on the Anthem xmas cruise but had to cancel a few days before.  Not sure about this March but also waiting it out.  As a backup we have Dec 2022 booked, but note that this cruise is literally 2x the amount of March (so paying for PCR test in March it's still much cheaper).  And same with our kids are getting older and not many March breaks together.  Hopefully things will calm down in the next month or so.  PS - What an amazing way to tell your kids!

    Hi LuCruise,  You are welcome.

At the EWR airport, everyone was wearing mask so we did not feel any different from home.  And definitely not crowded.  So the shock was stronger at the hotel’s sign and the mall.  To be fair, we had breakfast at the hotel, and tables were placed with enough social distancing to feel comfortable.  We now use YTZ to go to EWR because it is much easier for immigration which is done at the EWR.  We also do not have to get up at 4 am.   After we moved to downtown, we used YTZ three times to fly to EWR.  Very easy each time. This time, however, US ESTA (e-US Visa) system went down, apparently country wide, just before I used my Nexus card.  I was luckily cleared manually through Americans/Canadians immigration booth.  Not sure what happened to people who piled up in the “other” nationality immigration booths without Nexus cards, American or Canadian passports.  They were definitely crowded.

My husband did not want to drive to CL. Otherwise, under the current circumstances, the driving to Cape Liberty is a very reasonable and safe alternative.  My son stopped for gas and drive thru meals only.

    Getting there:

So on departure day, I was scheduled to be met at 9:15 or so.  At about 8, I got a call from room service offering up a few options - she was concerned I hadn’t called and wanted to make sure I had something.
Got an omelette , a fruit plate, and a few waters and had it delivered within 10 minutes with well wishes from both her and the crew dropping off.

I ate as I viewed the action from my window.  Tyvek suited crew escorted one group at a time off the gangway, a customs agent looked at passports from a distance and then groups were taken away by hired cars to the quarantine hotel (I assume)

Most people seemed ok with the process, but a few passengers were waving around wildly and yelling - I felt terrible for the staff as they continued to perform flawlessly

There seemed to be more cases as I wasn't fetched until closer to 10:30 - well after the Captains last call to get off the boat!  I did get to hear him call one last family by name to please leave 🙂

when I was my turn - everything went as previously laid out and in. On time my family was in a luxury sprinter limo on the way to the private airport between Miami and Fort Lauderdale

We passed through the gates at the airport and went out on to the tarmac jumped on board and were away.

After a short refuelling stop and break, we arrived home and were met at the plane by CBSA officers and given 2 home test kits for each of us.  Street side, RCCL even had a pair of minivans waiting to drive us home from the airport

I’m now safely at home with the family and living like a bachelor in the basement while wifey hold down the fort with the kids upstairs.

I’ll post some final thoughts later, but in the end, we are home, safe, and eternally thankful for everything Royal Caribbean did for us.

As for the cruise? It’s always what you make of it - we got to see a great version of Hiro while the ship was still docked and got to see iskate 2.0 which is something we missed last time on Symphony - although somewhat curtailed for me, we had a great time overall and look forward to our next adventures!

    Hi Cruisebot21,

We are back to Canada safely, all negatives from Anthem cruise and therefore this question is just for my curiosity.

How did customs/immigration were handled?  At your Canadian destination airport upon arrival?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. WE booked the Anthem for March break about a month ago when things were looking better.

Not so sure now between the spectre of Omicron and Royal no longer providing the PCR test that we are going to proceed. We are going to watch and see over the next month before final payment is due and decide. Hate to disappoint the kids.... this is a make up for a cancelled March break 2020 cruise. Hard to believe two year later we are likely going to cancel for the same reason.

You are welcome.  Although we had the fiasco for both tests, we were lucky that they still did them on the ship.  I do not know your kids' ages but you may be able to do two jabs before cruise, then it will eliminate at least the first PCR tests (antigen tests are faster and cheaper)?  We were on Anthem in Feb-March, 2020.  They were younger and could not enjoy many of activities such as ifly, bumper car, North Star as much as this time.  Ironically, the day care they go to had positive kid(s) while they were away.  It turned out that the cruise was safer.

When you received your PCR results, was it on Royal Caribbean letterhead or on a partner lab letterhead?  I am curious since our Government says the test has  to be done by an accredited lab and I am wondering how the cruise lines handle this.  Thanks.

Sorry I don't know how to post a photo.

It is on letterhead of eurofins  Clinical Enterprise

with my birth date, gender, passport No., address and phone No. in Toronto with Physician name,  (this could not be the tester as there were four testers)

Test type, Specimen Kid ID, sample type and the result with collection date & time and looked very official with disclaimer 😀

Address at the bottom is Framingham, MA 0172 with a phone No.1-833- xxx I assume the US No.  Also it states:  Ernst Schaefer, MD, Laboratory Director/Chief Medical Officer with printed time.  Address is the second thing I checked, after "negative" as I read that it had to be "done in U.S.A."

Is Anthem Royal Caribbean?  They accept unvaccinated passengers?

Yes, sorry should have mentioned that.

Apparently, I have read a report from an adult who was not vaccinated in RCL forum.  But seeing at least 3 couples were rather surprising.  Of course unvaccinated kids under 11 are still accepted.

  13. Appreciated receiving valuable info before I left, so I share what I experienced.

When my son’s family booked this cruise more than a year’s ago, I thought he was too optimistic.  We were back and forth of going not going and although we booked ours when he paid the final (knowing we could cancel last minutes for a full refund), he and I were still changing our minds almost every few days as COVID situation and rules were changing.  He was going to drive to minimize the risks to two young unvaccinated kids (later managed to get the first jab before cruise) and we were flying a day early from YTZ (Billy Bishop Airport) because the original cruise departure time was 3 pm, later changed to 5 pm.  Both of us and DIL were boostered but my son was not eligible for booster before he left.

Booked a hotel near EWR with a cancellation option prior to 3 days, as hotels were filling up or sold out.

Bought air tickets 3 days before departure, my first, ending up paying almost double of fares in Sept.

This was one cruise I did not feel fun or exciting to prepare.  Worrying too much, what if.  Packed the day before departure, another first.

Booked antigen tests at a Rexall @$30 in the morning so if cancelled for any reason, we could find another option in the afternoon.

Did not know that the EWR hotel was Mask Optional.  Went to a nearby shopping mall to get a few things.  It was packed, I meant PACKED, did I say PACKED with less than 50% masked.  Went out right away and prayed that we were there less than 15 mins.

Our 12:30 pm check in was quick and easy.

iMessage worked to my son (12:00 check in time) without Internet 😊, but not to the DIL (both iPhones).  Unfortunately my free wifi dropped often.

His family was stuck at the PCR test facility at Check In area because the grand daughter’s first result was “in conclusive.”  She ended up doing  2 more times as the 2nd was also “in conclusive.”    It took more than 2.5 hours. They were old that morning so far 6 kids had to repeat because of  “in conclusive.”

There was a QR code in the Cruise Compass mid cruise.  Using the code, you could book your COVID tests.  A confirmation of booking was sent to your email.  More info such as test location (Deck 2) was delivered to our cabin a few days later.

Chic - Unvaccinated main dining at 5:30

Lucky to have a corner table, but on the second night another group with kids were seated right behind us although more spaces were available somewhere else.  At least 3 couples unvaxxed adults in the unvaccinated dining area.

The wait staff started to wear KN95 underneath of their regular black masks mid cruise.   We were told later by Solarium Bistro staff that “one of us” was positive.

    D lounge and drink benefits

We had 10 drinks daily between us.  Including my son, DIL and sometimes g kids, we only maxed out a couple of days, by dinner wine, frozen drinks, kid's cocktails, or bottle/can water.  We are very happy with this arrangement.  Don't know what to do if kids are not with us.  D lounge at 5 pm was always packed.

    Elevators

No observation of max 6 people (not same group) or mask wearing by many passengers.  Even when someone pointed this out, they thought the rule was STUPID.  I had to get off when 6 more people came in on top of existing 6.

4th deck Theatre - Unvaccinated Section

Every other row, seats were covered by RESERVED covers.  But many vaccinated passengers ignored them and sat on them.  Came in after ushers left and took off masks.  Made a mistake of sitting on 3rd deck, vaccinated section.  We were with masks on without kids once on the 3rd deck and felt SO UNSAFE as deck 3 was “mask free” and no social distancing was observed until Dec 20 when the protocols changed to masks indoor at all times except actively eating or drinking.  Even after this, not all were masked on deck 3 theatre.  No active monitoring by RCL anywhere.

    Other venues

After the first several days, reservations were easily obtained for free iFly, North Star, Rock Climbing, bump car spots.  Sport deck staff said they had a lot of free time as only few people a day last several days.

    Kid Club

Again it was not crowded after the first few days when we went.  Most often, 3-5 age group had only two including our grand kid when parents wanted to exercise.

Disembarking PCR tests on ship – Day 11 morning

Our appointments were around the same time.  My result came first by email in about 1 ¼ hours and two others in less than 2 hours.  But you guess it, nothing for my grand daughter.  We were all stressed out, not again !!  After lunch,  over 4 hours of waiting , a very patient parent finally called. It seems somehow hers was misplaced.  This COVID tests are so stressful till the end.  No paper results were delivered to our cabin.  Went to D lounge and printed test results and the ArriveCan receipt.

    Final

Custom/Immigration at YTZ.  Green stickers !!  Nobody checked PCR test results except the Porter agent at EWR check in.  Nobody looked at the ArriveCan receipt.  Guessed that info showed up via passports.  At the land border, DIL got a red sticker !!

Happy that we went and everyone came back in one piece before the sky was falling, but the next cruise for me will be a long away.  We could only go to the "gated" shopping area for some ports.  We could not go to a nearby beach with kids without taking a RCL excursion.  My son says he was so spoiled it would be difficult for him to cruise with a full capacity again.

Does anyone understand (or have heard) why Japan allowed the Diamond Princess to port with now 64 confirmed coronavirus cases but does not allow the HAL Westerdam with supposedly one patient with suspected (not confirmed) coronavirus cases to dock? Both ships were on Japanese itineraries with many Japanese nationals and had recent stops in Hong Kong.

My guess for the main reason the Diamond Princess was able to dock at Yokohama is the percentage  of Japanese passengers on her .  What Japan is going to do with so many fellow country persons. Yokohama is also base port.  Only handful of Japanese are on Westerdam.

    12 hours ago, fragilek said:

they could never have a confirmed case of the virus- only a handful of labs are licensed to undertake this test.   No ship can do this test.  All they can truly say is that no-one is displaying any symptoms . Royal are awaiting tests coming back from Atlanta (so even although New York hospitals have the test kits now conformation of results from CDC still released via Atlanta, I don't even know if the tests in other areas

I was wondering the comment as well.  Only special labs in Japan can perform the PCR tests and apparently the test takes several hours.  So it is a very time consuming exercise as they also test on all 600+ Japanese nationals repatriated by special chartered airplanes from Wuhan.  They are all quarantined.   Make sense to prioritize the testing.

I was interested in taking a similar but shorter cruise on the Diamond Princess in Spring so I am following the news closely.  As of Friday.

After a brief interview with all passengers/crews with filled questionnaire, originally 120 (with fever, coughing, etc) + 153 (closed contact with the corona virus diagnosed HK passenger) = total 273 passengers/crews received PCR tests.

With three batches of above test results:  10 +10 +41 = 61 were positive (22% of tested).

Additional 6 passengers/crew(s) who needed medical attention (unrelated) or spouse/closed contact with the above 61 positive passengers/crew(s) were tested:  3 were positive.

Total tested:  279  Total positive:  64

    28 Japanese, 13 American, 7 each Canadian and Australian…….

1 serious condition who had unrelated medical condition

Currently additional passengers/crews who had closed contact with the above positive passengers/crews are been tested.

The HK passenger was briefly in Shenzhen, China before he came to Tokyo  and coughing the day before embarking the Diamond Princess.  He also took a cruise  bus tour with around 40 people in a Japanese port.

What I found interesting is so far only 1 crew member was positive out of 64.  Although I do not know the ratio of passengers/crews tested, is this because crews were trained to have better health practice such as wash hands, etc.?

Re crew quarantine This is my guess:  Only essential crews are working.  no room attendance so very limited laundry staff, no wait staff except room service, no bartenders, no store clerks, so most of crews may be quarantined?

Apparently the biggest issue on the ship right now is running out of prescriptions.  I hope everyone gets what needed soon.  I take some extras on travel but never thought of taking extra two weeks.

You were right.  When I went to the Next Cruise office the first thing on 17th on board AdOS, the price was up.  Will keep checking now as no change from previous week on BF price.

Many, if not most, discounts are not combinable with each other.  However, with the best travel agent sites, you can enter all of the discounts that you are entitled to and the site will show the price of each possible combination along with the perks (such as on-board credits [OBCs] or prepaid gratuities) that go with it.  Often, the lowest price is not the best.  For example, my wife and I would rather have a $300 OBC than a $200 reduction in price since we always use up OBCs.

    Thank you Actuarian.

  20. Just back from AdOS.  They are not stock with the regular milk at the Windjammers but you can always get it from a server.  I got it at the main dining room as well, lunch and breakfast.  (never tried at Main Dining dinner).  They are very slightly pink(?) in the glass.  I have requested it on the other ships.

It takes a little longer sometimes so order it as soon as when you sit at the table.  You may not be able to keep it  in the fridge as the fridge is not cool or cold enough.

    You’re welcome.

Whats screwed up is that even though you put in your C&A number it won’t automatically give you the resident discount even though that information is part of your profile.  You need to enter your state/province separately.

Personally i would not wait to book on board.  This close to sailing that low price could go away quickly and so could the resident rate. I know on our sailing March 15 they jad super low prices one day then back up 3 days later.

So, are you really from TO or just say that like many of us because it’s one of the few cities recognized.   We are just east of TO.

I clicked senior and Ontario,  then somehow I got higher than when I only clicked senior.  So I will try both from now on.

I am leaving tomorrow morning for a Sunday cruise, I know $1590 is much better than 6 days AdOS's, hopefully it will be still there.

Yes, officially I am now TOcruisers.  When I created the handle name, I was just north of Toronto and used TO for the exact reason you mentioned.

Probably, the balcony discount is reduced by any number of other discounts, so you could end up with any number for the discount, all the way down to zero - don't try to figure out RCI math.

Something Is not right.  I’m getting a price of $1590 with my D discount.  There is also a resident discount that is applicable.

The reason that the the difference between the price with or without your D+ discount is that there is a promo on currently that offers instant savings.  This is not combinable with your balcony discount.

Thank you for your responses.  At least I thought I was getting $25 more Balcony discount than Diamond discount (whichever math RCCL uses).

Thank you also about the resident discount.  I stopped using it because when I used it with senior discount in the past, somehow I was getting higher total.  I am hoping to get a NEXT cruise certificate on board next week on AdOS to get an additional OBC.

    Coralc, thank you too.

  23. Please help me figured this out.

Finally got the Diamond Plus status.  I needed to book a couple of family cruises so I waited until I became the Diamond Plus. (Additional $25 is better than nothing).

No change in the balcony discount.  CAD$266 before Diamond Plus and CAD$266 after Diamond Plus.  I was expecting at least $25 more.

For example, 7 days Anthem Feb 23, 2020 for two (CAD)

Senior discount without Bal discount      GTY  Bal     CAD$1,893  ($2358 -136 (flash sale)-66 (DEAL code)-667 (BOGO60 Disc) plus $404 tax

    Senior discount with C&A Bal discount   GTY Bal     CAD$1,802  ($2,358 -66 (DEAL code) – 628 (BOGO60 Disc) - $266 (Balc Disc) plus $404 tax

I cleared the cashe etc. but no difference.  I think I should receive US$250-25 (less than 6 mos),  but it seems I only get a net of CAD$91 as a  balcony discount.

    Is this right?
